We need to catch you up! The Red House has been a flurry of activity lately, so let’s go through each room and see what’s been done – and what’s next.

The State of Things
It’s been a minute since we’ve offered a proper update on the shape of things at the Red House, so we’ll be diving into all that’s been happening over there. We’re super close to wrapping up this phase of construction prior to passing our final inspections! We can’t wait to start taking on all of the DIY projects that we’ve got in store. For now though, we need to get the final 5% of the kitchen and walnut paneled ceiling project wrapped up! Prior to diving into the specifics of each room, the entire home is at a ‘baseline’ of completion that includes:
- Millwork
- Paint
- Flooring
- Windows + Doors
Most of the dirty work is complete and we’re reeeeeally close to some major milestones. Let’s go!
The Living Room
The living room has gone from a mess to somewhat livable, and then back to being a mess 2 or 3 times now. Whew! The ramboard floor protection is up, the trash is removed, and we’re nearly ready to start introducing more furniture and decor – allowing us to visualize the plans we have for an impactful built-in shelving unit.
Complete
- Flooring
- Wall + ceiling paneling
- Fireplace installation
- Trim + paint
What’s Next?
- Install light fixtures
- Build out sound system
- Finalize all furniture
- Plan for built-ins around sofa
The Kitchen

The kitchen has come a looooong way since the beginning! We completely changed the layout by removing a peninsula of cabinetry, adding a 14′ wide double sliding door and swapping a small exterior door for a trio of windows in the corner. We can’t wait to peel that plastic off after the final inspection, but in the meantime, you can see the mood board here!
Complete
- 14′ double sliding door installation
- Door removal + window installation
- Cabinets are in!
- All remaining items have been sourced
What’s Next?
- Appliance installation
- Lighting, plumbing + hardware installation
- Custom range hood install
- Countertop + tile backsplash
The Kids Room (Second Bedroom)

What is now the kids’ room was once the home’s primary (and much larger) bedroom. The overall layout of the room hasn’t changed much, but we did reverse the layout of the closet to accommodate a stacked washer/dryer unit. This change also added around 6″ of depth to the entire closet as well, but the room is big enough that the slight loss of space isn’t noticeable. You might be wondering why we wouldn’t make the Kids Room the smaller bedroom, but we’re thinking of this space as a play room, too. And like the rest of the home, this room got all new doors and millwork that nods to its mid-century roots, but brings it into modern times.
Complete
- Closet Re-framing/door reversal
- Window repair
- Washer/dryer hookups
What’s Next?
- Finish washer/dryer install
- Built-in bunk/Desk combo
- Window coverings
The Primary Bedroom
What was once a bedroom, then a laundry room, is now back to being a bedroom! We’re considering this room the primary, since we were able to reconfigure things to add an ensuite half bathroom. It’s a cozy nook of a room with just the right amount of space for a king bed and a pair of nightstands. This temporary setup wont last long though! We’ve got big plans for a built-in, upholstered headboard with integrated nightstands. That’ll come in due time.
Complete
- Re-framing closet
- Window repairs
- Addition of pocket door for half bath
What’s Next?
- Integrated headboard/nightstands
- Window coverings
- Closet organization
The Half Bath

This is the one room of the house that didn’t exist when we purchased it. Created from stolen space from the big full bathroom, this compact little space will barely have space for a vanity and a toilet, but really, what more do you need from a half bath? We enjoy making smaller rooms really special, sort of like a hidden treasure, and this room definitely does that!
Complete
- Wallpaper
- Tile and heated flooring
- Vanity instal
What’s Next?
- Countertop installation
- Toilet installation
- Plumbing fixtures + hardware
The Main Bathroom

This was the first room in the house that we fully completed and we couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out! We considered every last detail down to the doorknobs and custom walnut cabinet hardware. The addition of the nearly 4′ x 4′ window maximized the natural light in the space and we’re obsessed with the forest views in every season. It’s abnormal for us, but finishing the bathroom first might be our new go-to renovation plan!
Complete
- Cabinet + Vanity install
- Tile + heated flooring
- Huge new window
What’s Next?
- This room needs a roller shade or cafe curtain for privacy, but other than that, this room has been checked off our list!
This project has been in the works for over a year, and we’re nearing the end of the main ‘contractor’ phase where we’ve still got tradespeople in and out. Soon, we’ll be the only ones accessing the space, and it’ll really start to feel like home to us. We can’t wait to get started on all of the post-inspection personalization!

Thank you for the update!! I love everything you’ve done to the Red House!!
Every room is so special, and it’s so fun to see the progress documented!
Loving following along on the Red House! Do you mind sharing the paint colors on the walls and trim in the living room, primary bedroom and kitchen? I’ve searched haven’t found it on the blog. Thanks!
Hi Amy! Walls are Ben Moore Cloud White (a super creamy soft white) and trim is BM Stone Hearth.
Oh this is going to be so good!
Eeek, thank you!
