If You Give a Mouse a Cookie…
When we first received a tour of the Red House, we thought, Oh! This kitchen needs mostly cosmetic updates. No problem. BUT, our curiosity got the best of us when we wanted to figure out why the ceiling is lower in the kitchen than the rest of the house. So, when given a cookie… we’ll want to first inspect the ceiling, see mold, then decide to demo the ceiling and start anew. Then we’ll see the potential of a raised ceiling, and what if we also paneled it, too?! And thus began the journey of our Red House kitchen design.

An Earthy Color Palette
I’ve mentioned this before, but designing the Red House has been an unexpected joy. Prior to designing this home, I had been growing tired of design trends that filled my Instagram feed and was feeling stuck. I didn’t know what I liked anymore, or if I even had a desire to experiment with design anymore! But pushing ourselves towards a new aesthetic in this Mid-century home has been SO. Much. Fun! I never considered myself an MCM design lover, but I think it was because I didn’t know enough about it – nor had I ever dug deep enough to find the ‘good’ stuff, the stuff that actually spoke to me.

This vintage marble dining table was the first piece that dictated the rest of the kitchen design!
Now, I find myself falling in love with interior design all over again, and I have the Red House to thank. The home itself is what has always influenced our design decisions, and in the Red House’s case, we knew how important it was to incorporate the surrounding nature into our design.
How Does the Red House Kitchen ‘Feel’?
The Red House craves an earthy color palette. She wants soft edges and clean lines and comfort and playfulness. She wants to be a mood, but she’s super chill about it.

And so, we took all of these feelings into account when pulling together the final kitchen design! While the backdrop is mostly neutral, we’re leaning into all-wood cabinetry, green soapstone countertops(!), punches of black and subtle texture. A splash of red, leafy greenery, real brass accents and artwork will kick it all up a notch.
The Kitchen Mood Board
We’ll be working with a handful of partners to bring this vision to life, including our longtime supporters, Rejuvenation and The Tile Shop! And this should come as no surprise, but cabinetry will be Cabinet Joint head-to-toe, as we had the best experience in using their product for our Chicago home’s big kitchen overhaul. Anyway, on to the mood board!

1. foster sconce | 2. home kit kit tile | 3. allenglade chandelier | 4. soapstone countertops | 5. straight noce cabinets | 6. blair faucet | 7. giana sink | 8. under-shelf accessory | 9. electric range | 10. fouts runner | 11. rinna rattan bowl | 12. canister | 13. cherry wood bowl | 14. dining table (vintage) | 15. dwyer rug | 16. como table lamp |17. harper chair | 18. maria planter

Oh my stars this is going to be good!!!
Can’t wait to share the progress!
It’s going to be both cozy and beautiful!
I’m in love, I’m in love and I don’t care who knows it! I have been chomping at the bit for this kitchen (and bathroom and bedroom and… ) I also can relate to your thoughts about interior design and taste changing. I’m experiencing that myself in a surprising way. As always, I’m glued to my favorite @yellowbrickhome to see what’s next! Love you guys!
Haha, yay! This house just feels SO right. Thank you, Cynthia!
You guys can do no wrong! So excited you’re excited .. can’t wait to see it!
That’s so kind! Thank you!
Thank you so much! This mood board somehow feels so fresh and new. I’ve been stuck on our MCM house dining room, and something about the pieces you’ve pulled here just sparks a great vibe.
So glad this is helpful!
It fun to watch a creator do what truly inspires them, not just what will get the most clicks and likes. Though I’ve never known you to be those people, we (speaking for your audience friends here) are happy that you listen to your home and yourselves and create real art!
Excited to see this play out! :)
Hello! That is absolutely stunning! Excellent work!
