How many people in your household have a cold right now? Hang on, let me count: 1, 2, 3… I see you back there! Scott, Lucy and I have finally conquered the cloud that hung over our home for weeks (starting around the holidays and not giving up until we bid January good riddance). Over the course of our many ailments, at least one of us had a low-appetite at any given time, which means that mom turns to smoothies!

We’re a smoothie loving family (or as Goose would say, foovies!), and I generally have a combo of fruits and veggies up my sleeve depending on the mood or season. Today, I’m sharing the cold-busting recipe I’ve been whipping up since that first sniffle! Loaded with spinach, fresh orange, coconut and oats, it’s an immune buster packed with vitamin C that’ll keep you feeling full – because you couldn’t possibly eat one more slice of dry toast.

My favorite thing about smoothies is that there is no steadfast rule to how much of this or that that you must add. Love coconut? Add more! Looking for tanginess? Throw in an extra clementine! Need to mellow out the flavors? Toss in crushed ice!

I’ve found that the smoothest blend will come by pouring in liquids first and working your way up to frozen chunks. So for this one, I start with almond milk and juice, followed by oatmeal, spinach and fruit.

This green smoothie – cold-busting or otherwise – has become a quick favorite in our home! The banana and coconut add a creaminess that can’t be beat, the oats are filling and comforting, and the pineapple and orange add a subtle tartness. Combined, the results are cold and velvety.

Note: We absolutely love our double walled acrylic tumblers for keeping our smoothies cold! They’re no longer available, but these are near-identical with stellar reviews.

The Best Green Smoothie for Nursing a Cold

Loaded with spinach, fresh orange, coconut and oats, this smoothie is an immune buster packed with vitamin C that'll keep you feeling full – because you couldn't possibly eat one more slice of dry toast.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Servings 2

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 3/4 cup coconut flakes
  • 1/4 cup steel cut or rolled oats
  • 1 banana
  • 3 clementines (or 1 large orange), peeled
  • 3/4 cup pineapple, frozen
  • 1 handful ice, crushed or cubed

Instructions

  • In a blender, start by pouring in the almond milk and juice
  • Add in spinach, oats, coconut, oats, banana and clementine
  • Top with frozen pineapple and ice cubes
  • Blend on low until combined, work up to high speed and blend at highest speed for 30 seconds
  • Pour and enjoy!

Notes

This smoothie recipe is best when blended really well. The oats and coconut will add a texture unless they are blended at a high speed for the final step. If you need more liquid for a smoother blend, add an extra splash of juice!
Optional: Try adding a pinch of turmeric or cayenne for a kick!

I know you mentioned turmeric, but also try adding a little fresh ginger to the blend. Gives a nice kick and ginger has a lot of great health benefits!ReplyCancel

I second the addition of ginger ????. Each week I grate ginger and steep it to make a large batch of tea and use that as the liquid in my morning smoothies. ReplyCancel

My daily smoothie has a banana, ground flax and chia seed, Chinese 5-spice powder, spinach packed to the brim, honey and frozen mango. Add water or juice depending on your desired level of sugar.ReplyCancel

This looks lovely and certainly nutritious, but there is no food that can boost one’s immune system.  Vitamin C is essential, but extra while you’re sick has never been shown to shorten illness duration.
But of course this is no reason not to make these if they are yummy and comforting whilst sick!  I am a smoothie lover myself.  I’m a big fan of coconut milk, blueberries, and cinnamon.ReplyCancel

This looks delicious but drinking cold things in the winter just makes me cold. I’m a summer only smoothie drinker! Oatmeal and hot toast with nut butter all the way in the winter.ReplyCancel
