A Collected Kitchen: The Mood Board

Sharing the design direction for our Chicago kitchen renovation.

Our kitchen mood board, featuring earthy red, black marble and brass. via Yellow Brick Home

A Collected Kitchen with YBH

Earthy red cabinetry, black marble countertops and layers of white, cream and brass are what you can expect as our kitchen renovation rolls out! Scott likes to say, We’re in the eye of the storm. There’s nothing we can do right now, but in a few short weeks, the renovation will be full steam ahead. By the end of July, we hope to sell our current cabinetry, which will be immediately followed by floor refinishing, appliance delivery and cabinet building and installation. Then it’s on to countertops, tiling, and… well, you know we’ll take you along for every step!

What’s In the Mood Board

  1. We’re using ready-to-assemble inset cabinetry from Cabinet Joint in the color Sherwin-Williams Reddened Earth, Madison style. See the cabinet design plans here!
  2. We’ve teamed up with Rejuvenation, a long time partner, to bring all of our shiny, sparkly visions to life. We’ll be using a combination of these cupboard latches
  3. … along with these ball knobs (SO cute!)…
  4. … and these timeless pulls.
  5. These appliance pulls will go on our panel ready refrigerator, freezer and pantry.
  6. Two of these pendant lights will get installed in a row as the central kitchen fixtures.
  7. We’ll have these double sconces on both sides of the range, and we’ll be using the single sconce in the same style above the floating shelf. We already have these same sconces in our primary bath and have loved them ever since!
  8. The Pix Bianco 4×4 tile will be highlighted with Irish Creme grout, a mid-tone warm grey.
  9. Black marble countertops, here we come! This sample in the mood board was taken from our photo of the exact slab we chose.
  10. We’ll be installing one long oak floating shelf on the sink wall, similar to this.
  11. Our kitchen table! I shared our favorite pedestal tables a couple weeks ago, and I teased that the winner was in the pack. We couldn’t resist the cream marble top and simple base, a small nod to our dining table in the adjoining room.
  12. This is not the rug we purchased, but I think we’re looking for something in this palette to go run alongside the sink wall.
  13. Our first pot filler! This pasta making, half-Italian girl is very happy. We’re working with Delta Faucet to dial in our wet fixtures, and for the first time, we’re opting for polished nickel! We love its classic good looks, with just a hint of warmth.
  14. The pull down faucet will have Touch2O and VoiceIQ technology! Only mildly freaking out about that. (JK, REALLY excited about the voice technology!
  15. We’re adding a glass rinser(!) to our sink set up.
  16. And to round out the wet wall, we’ll be installing this black granite sink, so that it disappears into our marble countertop.

I love all the design plans!  I have learned so much from your blog, and your taste in decorating/home design has opened me to so many more possibilities that I never would have considered…but love in your home.  I have implemented a few in my own home!  Thanks, cannot wait to see this unfold.ReplyCancel

Thank you! This is adventurous for us, but we couldn’t be more excited.ReplyCancel

Such beautiful selections. That slab you found is stunning!
Question: the Madison door profile seems very similar to the profile you have in the Tree House kitchen. I think it is gorgeous, but I had the thought that it might be hard to clean (seem to remember you mentioning back then that you were nervous about the same thing?). Wondering how you feel about it after having lived with it for a while, especially with renters in the Tree House? I don’t mind cleaning if I can get whatever I am cleaning *clean*… details that trap gunk bum me out so much. (Hence being very intrigued by the glass rinser too! Ha, ha. ;) Would love to know how clean you are able to get this cabinet style. If you’re happy with it, I might use the same profile in our current kitchen project. Thank you! :)ReplyCancel

Great question! It IS very similar to the Tree House kitchen style that we love so much. After years of living with it, I’m happy to report that there have been no issues with keeping them clean whatsoever. That gave us the confidence to choose what our hearts really wanted!ReplyCancel

That’s so great to hear! Thank you so much for responding… so excited to feel free to go with that profile too! :)ReplyCancel

    So pretty!
After 2+ years of shopping, I FINALLY got a contract on a new house.  It’s a vintage home with a 1980s kitchen remodel. Surprisingly, it was really well done so I’ll be living with it for a while.  The cabinetry is a not-at-all-muted red with lovely butcher block counters.
Long story short – I’m totally stealing your beautiful mood board to help me amp up its style.   Can’t wait to see what rug you pick so I can add that sucker to my cart.  ha!    ReplyCancel

(Yes it’s all gorgeous and trend-forward but classic, but …) Ooooh a GLASS RINSER! ReplyCancel

I’m just all heart eyes over here and that exact black slab is amazing! I know you are getting your rejuvenation items in, and I’ve heard that the back of the brass pulls are hollow!?! Maybe you can show and share your thoughts. I love how hefty the ball pulls are (as seen in your stories)!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.5.22 - 10:02 PM

Not hollow! Very hefty. There is a hole for the screw to go, maybe someone else has confused that for being hollow?ReplyCancel

I just installed the brass Massey pulls from Rejuvenation in my kitchen. The back of the 4in pulls are hollow, like someone scooped out the back. But the 6in, 8in, and 12in pulls are totally solid. I have no idea why the 4in pulls are like this but not the rest? It’s very weird! So far it hasn’t bothered me while using the drawers. I’ve only had them installed for a few days so hopefully my opinion doesn’t change with more use :)ReplyCancel
