The Weekender: Our Fostering Adventure

shams | cream duvet | blackout curtains + rod | sconce | light

Hello, Catfish!

Our family is diving headfirst into the mostly exciting, slightly scary world of fostering! We’re working through One Tail at a Time (a non-profit pet rescue near and dear to our hearts), and we’ve been given a literal gift by welcoming Catfish into our home. She’s been nothing short of a dreamboat, barely making a peep and constantly offers up kisses, a pink belly and wet-nosed boops.

So many of you have already noticed: She fits so perfectly into your family! My inbox is filling up with the question: Will you adopt her? And while the thought of parting with Catfish already makes my stomach flip, we’re just… not quite there yet. I’m not quite there yet? I think Lucy and Scott would sign the adoption papers yesterday, but I also think we’re all still grieving the loss of Jack and CC. We have missed the love of a dog. Our home has felt too big, too empty for most of this year, and fostering feels like a safe place for us, for now.

We foster to save lives, to be a part of one pup’s journey to their forever home, to give back through volunteer work, to promote pet rescue, to honor Jack and CC. I fully expect us to foster fail – maybe the next dog, or the one after that, or the one after that – but I think we’ll all know in our hearts once that time comes.

Here’s more information on how to adopt a pet through One Tail at a Time. You’ll see Catfish up for adoption soon!

What Else?

My newest obsession? Banker’s lamps! I shared this one that we recently picked up for a makeover we’re working on, and it sold out instantly. This one is equally as cute, and this one comes in a few colors!

Jenni’s eggplant bathroom is the stuff dreams are made of. Wow!

Here’s an opinion piece that echoes at our dinner table every night. This is our second chance. We won’t get a third. via

Is ‘quick kimchi’ an oxymoron? I’d like to give this recipe a try!

I received a sample of this vitamin C serum, and – uh oh – I’m hooked. It’s fragrance-free, goes on like a primer (with the most matte finish!), and it has a satisfying tingle. This is a great product review, if you’re interested.

I’m still catching up on all of the One Room Challenge reveals, but I am taking all the notes on David and Stephen’s bedroom (and closet and bathroom, oh my!). The wall treatment. The Roman shades. The wallpaper and vanity!

To estimate your dog’s age in human years, multiply the dog’s age by seven, right? Wrong.

IG I Love

Hannah @hamb.home is renovating her 110-year-old four square and somehow makes it seem effortless. (I’m not fooled, Hannah, but you do it with style!) Her style is both moody yet bright, structured yet cozy, #goals yet attainable. Oh, and she Sharpied this wall like it was no big deal, but guys, it is a very big deal. Amazing.

What a sweet pup! Fostering is so generous, I don’t know if my heart could handle it. So good for you and Catfish ????ReplyCancel

I mean, I think it’s a law that you keep your first foster… especially when they’re obviously on this earth waiting specifically for you. They don’t ever *replace* what was lost, they just help you plug the hole in your heart so you can heal. And that’s ok. ReplyCancel

Hey there! I can certainly relate re: Catfish. Someone dumped a momma dog at our neighbor’s house last year. She had nine puppies, and we found a couple during a storm. My husband fell head over heels for one of them, and after much debate, we kept him. I was not 100% on board because the same week, I found out my 14-year-old Yorkie wasn’t doing well, and I felt disloyal keeping a puppy, like I was replacing her.
She died at the end of February, and while the puppy in no way replaces her, I have been so grateful to have him. He brings my husband and me such joy, especially during pandemic, but it took me a while to get there. I didn’t not love him, if that makes sense, I just wasn’t completely there.
I feel for you all. ReplyCancel

You hit it on the head re: foster failing. The comments are all well-meaning but the point of fostering is to help one pet find forever and then help the next one in line that needs you. I fostered six dogs before I landed on my dream boy and even then it took me a good long while to decide on keeping him because it meant the end of my fostering career. To make up for it, I do transports and other volunteer work to help pets in need but it’s not the same as getting that hands-on, one-on-one time with a pet who needs you and celebrating in their successes. Thank you for helping Catfish prepare for her forever family! ReplyCancel

I’ve been hearing stories from many wonderful foster parents, and we sooo appreciate it. It’s been incredibly rewarding in this short time, but it’s also a big mix of emotions.ReplyCancel

Baechu Geotjeori is a proper quick cabbage kimchi! Korean Bapsang has a delicious recipe. ReplyCancel
