Why We Added a Temporary Table to the Kitchen (+ a Round Up of Our Favorite Pedestal Tables!)

We added an inexpensive temporary table to the kitchen in the midst of our renovation. Here’s why.

Earlier this week, I elaborated (in Stories) on our idea to add a small dining table to our kitchen. Yes, the large dining table is right outside the kitchen door. Yes, we do most of our eating and working and playing at the large table. So why are we looking to add a smaller eat-in table to the kitchen?

The Kitchen Island Debate

I’ll answer that, but first, I encourage you to check out the cabinet design plans if you haven’t already! You’ll notice that there’s not an island in the plans, which was considered as we added 6′ of counter space on the range wall, deep drawers for pots and pans, easily accessible drawers on the pantry, and the new refrigerator placement in relation to the sink. Not only do we simply not need an island, but man, we have been LOVING the open space in our kitchen these last few months! So much space to breathe and spread out; the perfect room for impromptu dance parties and plenty of room for Lucy to pull up the kiddie stool and help me cook.

Why We Want An Eat-In Kitchen

That said, we want the charm of an eat-in kitchen. A small round table, bistro-style, to sip our morning coffee and have an afternoon snack. A place for Lucy to sit and chat while I chop veggies that she’ll try and steal. A gathering spot for a friend to use while she sips on her cocktail and I pull the cookies from the oven. Rather than standing around an island, we want the comfort of a dining chair to invite you in and have you stay a while.

Marketplace to the Rescue!

We found this 3′ oak pedestal table on Facebook Marketplace for a steal, and we set it down in the room as a proof of concept. Does the size feel right? Should we go larger? Smaller? Is there room to walk around? Note that in the new design plans, there will be no bump-out for the fridge (which is getting moved altogether), so that allows for more space on the side. We’ll also be removing the central ceiling light and instead, we’re having two ceiling lights installed, one of which can be centered over the new table.

Meanwhile, I’ve been spending the better part of a month researching 2-4 top pedestal tables. Initially I thought I might want a traditional style pedestal table (similar to the one we just bought for cheap), but already the problem lies in the base, since it limits where chairs can be placed. I still love the style though, even if it’s not us this time! Below, I’m sharing all the tables I’ve pinned and considered along the way, and spoiler alert: we bought one already! Any guesses on which one?

SO happy you’re going with a table instead of an island, and I know whatever you choose will be beautiful! I think the round table looks a bit odd in the space though, especially with the round table in the dining room nearby. Did you consider a rectangle table at all? Or maybe an oval?ReplyCancel

We love the repitition from the adjoining rooms with the round table! We considered oval but we really don’t want the table to sit in the middle of the room. Rectangular would be too similar to an island. We’re excited to see how this all ends up!ReplyCancel

I’m going to guess you got 1, 4, 5 or 9! (Am I close?!? Haha!) Love your description of how you envision utilizing a round table – now I want one too!! ReplyCancel

I am guessing you went with 8!ReplyCancel

Nope! But wondering if I should just spill the beans.????ReplyCancel

This was a very smart idea, you can’t really guess the right size/shape until you live with the table. I like this trend to have a table rather than an island. It is more conducive for conversation. My guesses are 8 or 13.  I love 1, but I think base foot might be too wide. ReplyCancel

1 is soooo good, wish we could’ve made it work!ReplyCancel

I can’t wait to see which you picked!  I love 8 and 14.  We’ve always had a little two-seater table in the kitchen for conversation and cooking prep.  Some of our happiest family memories have happened around that table!ReplyCancel

I’m looking to add a round pedestal table to our breakfast nook (the rectangular one we have has sharp corners and the space is tight) so I’m totally with you. Some of these are on my list too! Thanks for sharing the round up – I’m going to check some of your links to see if they’d be a fit for usReplyCancel

15 is my favorite. 4 has a lovely base shape but the top seems too thick.
We used to have a little 2 seater bistro table in our kitchen, but we have a stacking problem and it was constantly a mess. Due to counter placement, our backs were to the bistro table when we were cooking and we had a wide open space through the opposite wall to the dining room which meant we could actually face anyone who was there so that’s where most people chose to sit.  ReplyCancel

We have an eat in kitchen in our 60s home and we love it so much! It’s so nice to be able to sit and work in the kitchen vs standing all the time to chop! My parents always peeled potatoes at the kitchen table and now I can do the same. ReplyCancel

7 or 14.  At least those are my favorites!!  ReplyCancel

  • phyllis6.10.22 - 1:34 PM

My guesses include 4,5, 10 and 15. Stop the suspense before the weekend and just spill! ReplyCancel

  • Megan6.10.22 - 6:22 PM

Oh I LOVE number 1! I’m super curious which one you ended up going for!ReplyCancel

  • Amy Morris6.16.22 - 5:41 PM

Yes! The base is so important. That’s what I think of immediately. That it would be most comfortable & flexible with less “feet” and not too girthy pedestal! You’ve found so many great ones! ReplyCancel
