The Best Year Yet

headboard | chunky throw | marble shelf | bedside table | bunny clock | sconces

When we look back at 2017, we both agree that it’s been one of our best years yet, but we think it’s equally safe to say that the best is yet to come. The photo above makes us smile so hard, but to be honest, we were torn on having a proper maternity photoshoot. Was it for us? Would we regret not having one? I was asking this to a group of my girlfriends at our baby shower, and one of them, genius that she is (thank you, Kelly!), suggested that I take the stress out of it and throw my camera on a tripod. Pile the dogs on the bed. Wear pajamas. Set that self-timer, and by all means, get a little cheesy! But no matter what, absolutely commemorate this moment in time.

This year has taken us by storm. When we think back to the beginning, we were diving head first into The Scary Room – with the highest hopes that it might one day be more than just another space to collect ‘stuff’. I also remember holding back tears in the darkest corner of a candlelit restaurant with a friend, recounting every frustrating, and sometimes painful, doctor’s visit from our journey-towards-pregnancy. To keep our minds occupied on anything else, we stayed busy. We renovated a kitchen in Baltimore alongside some of our very favorite people, and we’re convinced we’ve never had more fun or been more exhausted. We booked a trip to a small town in Michigan, where we later found our very own Tree House. We flipped the garden apartment on its head, but we think the galley kitchen stole the show. We made over three rooms, three ways. And in the midst of it all, we received the best news of our lives! We still get weepy thinking about that moment in time and all the stories you shared, too.

Thank you, truly, for reading, encouraging us and making us work smarter, better. Over the next few days, we hope to wrap up the nursery, eat cookies, stay in our pajamas and get our fill of Christmas movies (any favorites you’d recommend?). We’ll see you in the new year, and until then, we’ve rounded up a handful of favorite posts from 2017 (just click on any thumbnail below to take you to the post!). Warm, happy holidays to you all! xx

Y’all are the best. I am so excited for you. Being a mama to 3 (6 yr old son and 4 yr old ID twin girls) it makes me smile to see others at the beginning of their journey, although I guess I’m still at the beginning of mine:) What an exciting time this is for you both. Thank you for all the wonderful genuine content and letting us have a peek into your lives. Merry Christmas!ReplyCancel

Happy holidays! Here’s a suggestion, Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter. It has Robert Downey Jr. as her brother and a sweetly sexy Dylan McDermott (pre-The Practice.) I love it.ReplyCancel

My favorite Christmas movie is Just Friends, an old silly comedy with Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris. Have a good laugh on me if you watch it :) Joyeux noël from France!ReplyCancel

Love this shot of you guys! We’re in the same boat (due in February) and I keep promising myself that I’ll set up the tripod and do a couple of shots with the big girl camera instead of my phone. But I have a feeling my trigger finger will be itching more after the little lady arrives! :) The best is here, right now, until the next moment comes! Big hugs to you!ReplyCancel

Wishing your family the happiest holiday season, and a joyful new year!

I teared up reading your post today. We too started off 2017 in the midst of an infertility journey and are savoring these last days as a family of two (humans anyways!) with our own little one due in March. It has been a delight (and inspiration) watching your prepare for your new addition.

Any tips on taking your own maternity pictures?ReplyCancel

    • Kim12.27.17 - 11:19 AM

We are so happy for you, Amanda! Thank you so much for the kind words.

I spend the most amount of time setting up the shot – making sure that the photo is framed properly, the background looks right, etc, etc. We got the dogs set up and settled before we started, which also takes another little while. I’d say setting up takes us at least 30 minutes! Then I have Scott get in the shot so I can set the focus, and I set up my camera to take the maximum amount of photos with a single click. Once I hit the shutter, I jump into the shot! My biggest tip would be not to worry about perfection – it’s the spontaneity that you’re looking to capture anyway. :DReplyCancel

I am so happy for you. I went through a similar journey to have my own family. I cried in some very public places, and had to hide out in a bathroom or two at friends baby showers (of course I was happy for them, but so sad for myself and husband). My twins are now almost 6! It was worth every trip to the doctor. Good luck in the coming days, and cant wait to see what is in store for you in 2018ReplyCancel
