Our Entryway Color Reveal!

Our entryway has been a labor of love and a work-in-progress for many years. Today we’re unveiling the most recent update – a fresh paint color!

Welcome to My Favorite ‘Room’

Voila! This summer will mark the eight-year-anniversary of us living in this home, and it has taken every day of those eight years to turn our entryway into what you see today. It’s often why I tell people that my favorite ‘room’ in this house is the entryway. It’s why we feel pride in the work we’ve poured into every inch. Our entryway has been an evolving, living and breathing space. It welcomes our friends in, greets them with a smile. (Now more than ever, we think!)

This post is in partnership with Valspar, a paint brand that believes everyone should love where they live. Find your perfect color at Lowe’s, either in-store, online at Valspar.com or through curbside pickup!

The toasty, taupe-y color that won our hearts is Milk Toast (3001-10B) by Valspar. It feels comforting and warm, with undertones of rose and fresh peach. We. Are. In. Love! As with any paint project, we spent weeks dissecting paint chips taped to the wall (all picked up from Lowe’s), and we miraculously narrowed our choices down to Valspar’s Adirondack Path, Sand Storm, New Penny and Milk Toast. Valspar’s vast color selection ensured that we would find exactly what we were hunting for, even if it was our own indecision that halted our progress – ha!

In the end, we felt like Milk Toast had enough taupe to prevent is from feeling too ‘little kid,’ but enough color to make us smile – which is exactly how we want our friends and family to react when we welcome them into our home.

Choosing the Right Paint for the Job

We’re no strangers to Valspar paint, and Valspar Reserve® Interior Paint and Primer is our new go-to for the bulk of our paint projects! Valspar Reserve® is their premium formula for the richest color, and I can already say from firsthand experience that it resists scratches and scuffs while being wipeable. (Like, I’ve already cleaned up crayon and finger paint with success!)

We purchased ours from Lowe’s in both eggshell (for the walls) and flat finishes (for the ceilings), and we treated ourselves by hiring out the paint job itself. While we typically tackle the painting ourselves, in one part of our entryway, the ceiling is 20′ from the ground, and we knew a professional could handle it safely.

Hello, Curves!

Did you know our home has curves?! Milk Toast shows them off from every angle, and it was the best surprise. The arch that separates the living room from the entryway was added in phase one of our home renovation…

Painting the Walls + Ceiling the Same Color

You might be noticing the trend of painting walls and ceilings the same color, and I am here for it! Not only does it give the illusion of taller ceilings, but the color envelopes you; it embraces you like a hug. To play off the new color, we swapped in this light and added an oversized floor mirror (anchored securely to the wall with straps):

In smaller spaces, I’m all in for painting walls and ceilings the same color. Have you tried this in your own home? There’s something about this application that feels extra special, like it encourages you to unwind and enjoy.

Since adding Valspar Milk Toast to our entryway, we’ve continued our tradition of painting all the nooks and crannies in our home a more saturated color! Below, this is our view from the sofa, looking into both the entry and snug (on the right). Chicago homes are notoriously long and skinny due to how the lots are allocated, and adding a dash of warmth here, a splash of color there, adds so much dimension.

Aaah. Will this view ever get old? Thank you to Valspar for encouraging us to take the leap with color, and thank you for cheering us on as we waffled between every paint sample!

PS: This is how we added a stair runner, this is our shoe cabinet ‘hack,’ and this is where we’ve chronicled every project we’ve tackled in the entryway!

Simply stunning! Perfect colour choice. I can’t help but wonder if you worry about smashing the mirror when swinging the door open though. Do you have a door stopper I couldn’t spot? (I’m sure the answer is yes!!)ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.17.21 - 7:41 AM

We tested the swing of the door to make sure it won’t hit. It wouldn’t hit the mirror even if we tried, because the hinges won’t allow it to open that far!ReplyCancel

WOW!!! It is SO pretty! I love the colour you choose, and I love seeing the arches and “curves”. I’m now thinking about using Milk Toast for our front door.

This paint color gives a whole new vibe to that sweet oval jute rug in front of the shoe cabinet ☺️ReplyCancel

Wow, well done guys. Considering this isn’t a typical box-shaped room, I love how cohesive and cozy the space feels by being all one color on every surface. I’m curious how you determined what color to paint the underside of the arches; I can see the downstairs remains white, but the upstairs looks like you may have extended Milk Toast there? I’m always at a loss for how to handle my arch transitions in my home, so would love to hear your insights there. Thanks for the inspiration, what a gorgeous project!ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.17.21 - 8:41 AM

Good eye! After living with it for a couple weeks, we’re thinking of painting the inside of the arch upstairs the same color as the playroom. I think that was a detail we didn’t go over with the painters, so we’ll just touch that up ourselves. Our thinking is that we’re spending all our time in the larger rooms (not the entryway, which is a pass through), so the saturated color should stay in there.ReplyCancel

It’s beautiful and that color is the icing on the cake (although I think my favorite detail is still the floor!!)ReplyCancel

Love it. Do you mind sharing the painters information ReplyCancel

  • Ashley5.17.21 - 10:59 AM

Love it so much! What a beautiful space. Tons of similarities to our narrow 1904 foursquare in Portland. We recently painted our bedroom Malted Milk (SW), which is super similar to Milk Toast and went for it on the ceiling too. I adore it and would most certainly describe it — and actually have described it many times as a HUG. The coziest, most refreshing room in our home. Thanks for the inspiration and beauty, as always!  ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.17.21 - 11:30 AM

Ooh, sounds so beautiful! This paint shade is most certainly a HUG!ReplyCancel

  • Ele5.17.21 - 12:52 PM

Ok, I must admit, I wasn’t sold on the color when you had the swatches in your stories. But WOWZA am I so happy to be proven wrong. It’s stunning. Not too pink, not too beige. Modern yet refined. HOW have I never noticed those arches! Well done guys, it looks amazing! ReplyCancel

This is beautiful! I love that you painted the ceiling. I have crown molding on my ceiling and don’t want to commit to painting the trim.  Should I paint the ceiling the same color of my walls if the trim remains white? ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.17.21 - 4:27 PM

I’d paint the trim the same color, but knowing you don’t want to do that, I’d probably leave the ceiling white. Otherwise, the white crown will look like it’s dividing the ceiling and wall. But honestly, it’s personal preference! You could try painting it all the same, and then paint the crown back to white if you don’t LOVE it!ReplyCancel

I’ve been waiting for this reveal and I love it! Give me this hug and your two flat shower tile hug, and I’ll squeeze right back. I love the subdued peach color, some times it looks beige and other times orange, but always warm and happy. I also love that new light fixture!ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.17.21 - 6:49 PM

It’s SO similar to the Two Flat’s peachy shower, isn’t it?! ????ReplyCancel

  • Meredith5.17.21 - 8:12 PM

So, so beautiful! Exactly what I envisioned when you described what you hoped for the space – every decision you made is just perfect. ReplyCancel

  • Jennifer5.17.21 - 11:12 PM

It’s perfect! But wait – do you have an elevator?!?ReplyCancel

  • Sara5.18.21 - 10:33 AM

This turned out so great!! Love the Milk Toast color.
What are your thoughts on painting coved ceilings the same color as the walls? I’m afraid that it may lose the detail of the curve. We currently have our walls a lighter gray in the main areas that’s about 3 inches above the door frame – similar to your bedroom I think? I feel like it works well in the rooms that have darker colors on the wall, but I’m the living and dining we were thinking of going all white.
    Any opinions welcome! ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.18.21 - 12:12 PM

Hi Sara! I’d go for it!ReplyCancel

    • beth5.19.21 - 11:48 PM

Hi Sara, I have coved ceilings in several rooms as well and I sure love the contrast of having walls and ceiling different colours. I use the same colour wall and ceiling in my halls that don’t have the feature. Just thought I would chime in.  :)ReplyCancel

  • Bailey5.18.21 - 2:55 PM

Looks amazing!! Do you have a preferred furniture strap you use to anchor the walls? I see both the nylon and metal cord versions on Amazon but have not tried either. ReplyCancel

  • Katy5.20.21 - 4:05 PM

Gosh that color is gorgeous!! I’ve been toying with the idea of something like this for my bedroom and you’ve just inspired me to go pick up a sample pot to see if it would be as beautiful in my space as it is in yours. Can I get your opinion on something? I love the idea of painting the ceiling the same color, but in our bedroom we have a modern white ceiling fan. Currently it blends pretty well against the white ceiling. Do you think we should keep the ceiling white to work with the fan? Or let it pop against a painted ceiling? It *is* a nice looking fan, as far as ceiling fans go. Would love to know what you think.  Maybe I’ll just try it, I can always paint it back.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.21.21 - 7:43 AM

I’d try it! Any lighting will contrast with the ceiling color, whether it’s a white ceiling fan or something else. In a bedroom, it would feel so cozy!ReplyCancel

  • That is a gorgeous color!! How special!!ReplyCancel

  • Emily Haight6.18.21 - 1:23 PM

I read that you painted the walls an eggshell finish and the ceiling a flat finish. Any reason for choosing different finishes? I’m loving this color and now considering it for my entryway nook!ReplyCancel

    • Kim6.18.21 - 1:27 PM

Our painter suggested the two finishes. He seemed adamant about it, haha, but if we were to do it, we would have been fine with eggshell for everything. :) Flat DOES hide more, and a lot of ceilings have small imperfections, so that was probably why.ReplyCancel
