Now You See Us… + A Giveaway!

This giveaway is no longer accepting entries. Congrats to entry #407, Mark K, and thank you to all who participated!

If there’s one thing that we should have done a long, long time ago, it would have been to install curtains – or shades, blinds, anything. We’ve been a big, open book since we’ve moved in (oh, hi, neighbor! It’s just me in my jammies and my monstrous glass of wine; no big!), but with so much of our house – literally – falling down around us, it wasn’t as high on our priority list as it should have been.

Until now!

With our living room painted and, consequently, the window casing painted as well, it was a no brainer for us to go with the same cellular shades that we had in our last home – these 3/8″ double cell light filtering shades in glacier from Blinds.com. After all that research we did a little more than a year ago, we knew we were making the right decision for all the same pros and cons we weighed back then: ONE) If for any reason we would need to return our shades, we could do so on their dime, TWO) the cellular shades have a top down / bottom up capability (which is especially nice on our first floor) and THREE) we’ve learned from our past year’s worth of experience with them that they insulate really, really well. (And with these sub zero temperatures? We’ll take it!)

They arrived over the weekend, and while I knocked out the nook room, Scott got to work installing our new shades. Unlike our last house, our large picture windows (upstairs and down) are framed with studs, so no anchors were necessary; all said and done, it took less than an hour to hang all six shades on two very large windows!

For now, we’ve only covered the two largest windows in our home (the living room and the studio), but over time, we’ll slowly be tackling the rest – all twenty of them; a big leap from our condo which had four. (The blinds, just like everything else – all of our outlets, baseboards and light fixtures – will happen room-by-room, slowly. Of course this is due to practical purposes such as money, but how else do you eat a whale? One bite at a time.)

Not only do we stand behind the quality, durability and super-insulating-powers of our shades from Blinds.com, but we’re over the moon that they not only wanted to help us get a jump start on our very naked windows, but they also wanted to lend a hand for one of you, too!

Together with Blinds.com, we’ll be giving away a $150 store credit to one lucky reader!  Using the Rafflecopter widget below, enter as many ways as you’d like. Giveaway is eligible for US residents only and runs through Monday, February 3rd until 5pm CST, and the winner will be announced within this post. Good luck and happy entering!

  • Elly1.29.14 - 9:13 AM

Hi! I was wondering how these blinds are with dust/to clean? Thanks!ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.29.14 - 9:19 AM

Hi Elly, we had our prior blinds (the same kind) for almost a year before we moved, and the quality of the blinds are really nice – sort of like cloth with a smooth finish. They honestly don’t SEEM to collect build up, but a couple of times, I took a damp cloth and would wipe down them down lightly. It probably wasn’t even necessary, but you could also just spot clean them if something gets on them… or potentially use a little dust buster once a year if they get extra dusty (although again, they looked as good as new from the time we installed them to the time we moved out of our condo!).

The great thing is that you can get free samples before you pull the trigger on a purchase, and that’s what sealed the deal for us with these honeycomb shades!ReplyCancel

Kim is exactly right. Many of our employees have cell shades in their homes and haven’t noticed any issues with dust. However a swipe with a damp cloth or, our favorite trick, the brush attachment of your vacuum will get you squeaky clean in no time.ReplyCancel

Not to be needy or anything but could you post a picture with the blinds completely retracted so we can see what it looks like when they aren’t in use? I hate how much room mini-blinds take up when they aren’t in use, you lose about 1/8 of your window even when you aren’t using them.ReplyCancel

  • Kim1.29.14 - 11:55 AM

Andee, that’s a great point! I snapped a photo with my phone (this is in the studio). You can see that the blinds on the left and middle were pulled all the way up, and they don’t cover the actual window at all (only the window frame). The one on the far right (closest to me) was lowered all the way, and again, you still see the whole window:

I really love the functionality of the blinds that go up and down like this. We wanted something like this in our office, but we would have had to remove the trim around the windows. Now that I see yours, though, I might be second guessing our curtains! ;)ReplyCancel
