Mini Bedroom Makeovers to say ‘Thank You’

As a parting gift to our nanny – she’s family, really – we gave her family mini bedroom makeovers. Just one way we’ll be saying ‘thank you’ for being a part of our lives.

How do you say ‘thank you!’ to the person who has been caring for your child for the last 3 years? You might remember our nanny’s family from the time we refreshed their den, turning a rarely used space into a playful and functional hangout spot. This time, we’re sprucing up their bedrooms before the arrival of baby #2!

This post is in partnership with Brooklinen, a bedding brand that believes in comfort + quality at accessible prices. Use promo code YELLOWBRICKHOME at checkout and save $20 off orders over $100!

Lucy was 6 months old when we met Katherine, Peter and their son, Wallace. Wallace is a few months older than Lucy, and they’ve formed the tightest bond over the last 3 years of their little lives. The three people (+ baby bump) you see in that photo above? They’re family. And in less than a month, after a long – often sad, confusing and heartbreaking – road, Wallace will be a big brother!

Both Wallace and Lucy will start Pre-K in the fall, so once the baby arrives, we’ll be parting ways with the family we’ve learned so much from. So when Brooklinen asked us if we’d like to team up again, we knew exactly how we wanted to pay it forward! With another baby on the way and the end of our time together, there are a lot of changes on the horizon. To ease them into their transition, we wanted to give all of them a bedroom refresh, and Brooklinen was all in alongside us.

This is a family of color lovers, and we’re always up for that challenge! Purple and pink accents are woven through their home, so I started by gathering options from Brooklinen and asking Katherine which colors and patterns spoke to her more. She shared with me that her and Peter prefer darker sheets, and they’re not afraid of layering in multiple colors. On it!

First, Scott and I wanted to gift them all new bedding basics, which Katherine let us know would be much needed upgrade. (You got it!) Everyone received All-Season Down Alternative comforters and Down Alternative pillows. Both their bed and Wallace’s bed are queens, but we opted for king-sized pillows for an extra plush, full look.

One of my favorite things about Brooklinen is the ability to mix and match designs. For example, the Hardcore Bundle allows you to pull in a color wave for the sheets and another color for the duvet. No matter what you choose, all their colors and patterns go well together, and you save 25% by bundling. But I took it one step further by also mixing textures!

Right away, Katherine gravitated towards the Deep Navy Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle, a sateen staple with a touch of sheen. Next, I suggested bringing in the Heathered Cashmere duvet cover and pillowcases. The Heathered Cashmere is unlike any bedding material I’ve ever felt; it’s so soft with the prettiest weave. I topped that off with two more Luxe pillowcases in Terracotta Oxford Stripe and tossed this Lightweight Quilt at the foot of the bed. (The same quilt we have and love!)

As the cherry on top, we asked them to choose their favorite print from Juniper. They loved Splash, letting us know it reminded them of summers on the lake in both Canada and Texas (where each of them is from). We had it printed at 80″ wide(!), and it added instant depth to their room. A quick decluttering of the bedside tables and a vase of fresh-cut flowers finished off the space! I’ll always be amazed at how new bedding can instantly change the look and feel of an entire room.

Wallace’s Bedroom

With a baby on the way, Wallace’s bedroom was upgraded to the guest room, complete with his own queen bed! Since the move down the hall, he still preferred to sleep with his small fleece blanket and crib-sized pillow. My challenge was to create a bedding experience that he couldn’t wait to dive into at the end of the day!

I got more playful in his room and chose sheets in Rose, pillowcases in Clay, and a duvet cover in Terracotta Oxford Stripe – all Luxe Sateen for that smooth, crispy feel as you slip under the covers.

It’s worth noting that Brooklinen uses intentional, thoughtful design practices, such as envelope closer pillowcases (no floppy ends!), short + long side tags on fitted sheets and ties on all corners of a duvet cover. You can also see that I gave Wallace the same lightweight quilt in Black Lorimer – a timeless design in heirloom quality.

It’s safe to say that he loved it immediately, but it was confirmed the next day that he not only cuddled under the covers for the first time, but he couldn’t wait for his next nap.

We feel so lucky that Katherine, Peter and Wallace have been a part of our lives during Lucy’s most precious years. Although we’ll miss seeing them most days, we know that Lucy, Wallace and new baby still have so many adventures ahead!

A big thank you to Brooklinen for playing a major role in these mini makeovers and for helping us give the gift of cozy sleep – the most comfortable, as we were told by Katherine the very next morning.
