A Simple + Sweet DIY Gift Giving Idea

This post is in collaboration with Crate & Barrel.

Have you ever been caught off guard by a friend or neighbor who drops by with homemade treats during the holiday season? It always warms our hearts to receive a thoughtful assortment of cookies or jam, and to prevent being blind sided time and time again (no more!), I’ve started to DIY a few small gifts every year to have on hand in return. Gifts that can be made in batches of multiples. These tokens of appreciation are also a sweet way to thank our mail lady (who always comes through with our mail order dog food!), the FedEx driver (who knows to never ring the doorbell, lest we want to wake the neighborhood with our barking pups) or my hairdresser (who snips off barely any length when I say, I think I’m trying to grow out my hair – again!). In the past, I’ve whipped up jars of bath scrubs and Christmas-y themed candles, but this year I wanted to try my hand at homemade soaps!

You guys, it’s so simple. While you can easily get away with no more than two ingredients, you have the option to make the recipe as complicated as you’d like. Think: natural dyes, dried cranberries, crushed walnuts or basil leaves. Making your own homemade soap is as uncomplicated as using an oatmeal soap base – shea butter or goat’s milk bases work, too! – plus your favorite essential oil (or two or three).

The soap base microwaves down into a sloshy soup, and for my first round, I chose to use peppermint and vanilla essential oils, which felt both energizing and cozy. Bescause what’s more holiday-esque than candy canes and sugar cookies? I decided to use this round silicone mold, but you can get creative with hearts or stars or flowers (or, or…!).

I served up the soaps on these pretty marble dishes, wrapped them in silky, silver ribbon and topped them with sprigs of faux eucalyptus and pine. The best part of this gift is that the recipient can hold onto the soap dishes to use in their own homes, plus, everything looks prettier on marble!

For more details, I’m sharing the in-depth recipe and how-to on the Crate Blog this week! What are your favorite go-to gifts to make in multiples? I’m taking notes for next year, and you guys always have the best ideas.

I love how this turned out. I always wanted to try to make DIY soap on my own, but I never had the courage. I think I’ll try to make them this Christmas as little gifts. The packaging you made it’s so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this!ReplyCancel

I tried this a few years ago and by the time I finished they cost more than the nice french soaps at Marshalls LOL. Now I buy the nice french soaps at marshalls and put them in a small basket.ReplyCancel
