All the Tile (Installed!) In Our Two Flat + a Fun Video Conversation

This post is sponsored by The Tile Shop. We’re talking about the tile in each room of the Two Flat and how we feel about the spaces now that they’re complete.

A Fun Conversation with Kim + Scott

When choosing tile for the Two Flat – here’s that initial process – we knew we wanted a mix of fun + classic, with unexpected touches. But the pressure we put upon ourselves to design an entire home’s worth of tile was a bit daunting. In the video above, we take a deeper dive into each room with tile and why we felt it was the right choice for the home.

If you’ve been following along with the Two Flat renovation from the beginning, then you know that we worked with The Tile Shop on all things tile, and that is what made all the difference! We were able to choose not only the tile that best personified the Two Flat, but all the supplies, too – like mastic, grout and caulk, even tools. Let’s break down each of the rooms below!

Unit 1 | Pink Bathroom

After salvaging the pink bathtub and sink, we knew we would need tile that could play a supporting role. Glossy white subway tile is a classic choice, but we kicked it up a notch by adding black marble pencil around the perimeter, as well as polished marble skirting. The basketweave floor tile is the same tile we used in our own home’s entryway, so we know it can stand up to daily use beautifully!

Unit 1 pink bathroom tile selections: Hampton Niles marble mosaic 12″ x 12″ | Imperial Bianco gloss subway 3″ x 6″ | Black Marquina polished marble skirting | Black Marquina pencil tile | Imperial Bianco Barnes (cap) | charcoal grout

Surprise, here’s the first official glimpse into the completed den bathroom on the blog! We. Love. This. Tile. Tiling the shower on all sides – from floor to ceiling! – created a lovely nook to start the day off right, or better yet, a great escape after a long day. Our tenant has already let us know that she couldn’t love this bathroom more, thanks to this shower!

Unit 2 had one bathroom, so we knew we wanted it feel really special. Marble subway tile starts on the wall and continues up the shower, two extra-wide ledges provide ample space for products, and the marble continues onto the sloped ceiling! I first picked up a sample of the floor tile thinking it was also marble, but believe it or not, it’s porcelain! This will keep it looking as good as the day it was installed.

Unit 2 bath selections: Cassettone grey mosaic | Firenze Carrara 4″ x 12″ | Firenze Carrara skirting | Firenze Carrara capital | Black Marquina pencil tile | natural grout (floors) | standard white grout (walls)

Unit 2 | Laundry Room

To keep the apartment cohesive, we carried over the bathroom floor tile into the laundry closet. Although this tucked away room is small, we’re firm believers in special touches to make every nook and cranny feel loved.

Unit 2 | Kitchen

The 5″ x 5″ tile that we laid in a stacked pattern in Unit 2 was an unexpected choice for us, but as soon as I saw it, I knew. By using white grout, I was able to cut down on contrast to prevent the pattern from feeling overwhelming – but I could see a soft grey or taupe working really well, too.

Note: I’m sad to report that this pattern has since been discontinued, but the Annie Selke Artisanal line at The Tile Shop is similar!

I don’t usually love something so retro, but that pink shower is perfect and reminds me of elementary school in a warm nostalgic way. I’m totally saving that idea to replicate. And so good to hear that you have it rented already!ReplyCancel

I love this! That extra touch of tile in the laundry room is perfection  ???? Just one tiny thing that I thing you addressed before but I cant find it. How do you turn the water on in the pink shower without getting wet? That burst of cool water in the winter always gets me. ReplyCancel

The shower head tilts, so it can point away from you when turning on the water. In hindsight, we wished we would have had the plumber install it farther down the wall!ReplyCancel
