The Window Treatments In Our Home + Which One Is Right for You?

Today we’re providing an overview of all of the different ways we combine form and function with window coverings in our home!

In 2023, we gave our living room, primary bedroom, dining room and craft room a sprucing-up with fresh window coverings from our longtime friends at Bali Blinds. It never ceases to amaze us how big of an impact fresh shades or drapery can have on a space! Window coverings are an essential part of a home’s design and function and can be customized in infinite ways to meet your needs and individual style. Let’s break down the various styles, how we use them, and which product is best for your home!

This post is in partnership with Bali Blinds, a brand we’ve used for years and continue to love. Fabric samples are always free, and Bali Blinds can be purchased at any of these retailers, or you can call their customer service directly.

Natural Shades

Natural shades provide texture and variation that is hard to match with other styles of window covering. They’re uniquely beautiful and since they’re manufactured from naturally-occurring materials like bamboo, grass, and jute no two are alike!

In addition to their organic beauty, Natural Shades also offer practical solutions for all sorts of window covering applications. They’re tested to be durable in high heat and humidity environments and can even be ordered with a thermal liner to increase insulation and privacy. Natural shades can also be customized in multiple lift styles including motorized, corded and cordless lift for total customization.

We’ve loved natural shades since we renovated Lucy’s nursery over 6 years ago and they still look great in her ‘big girl room’ today!

Tailored and Classic Roman Shades

Roman Shades are a perennial YBH favorite! Much like natural shades, they provide a huge variety of options in fabrics, lift styles and light control. We highlight the differences between Tailored Roman and Classic Roman in this post, so if you’re in need of a refresher on their individual nuances, we recommend starting there.

Classic Roman Shades, seem above, offer a more streamlined collection of fabrics in a crisp, neutral palate that brings understated sophistication to any space. They’re lightweight and easy to install and offer beautiful and durable quality that’s simple to maintain.

Tailored Roman Shades are similar to Classic Roman Shades in function, but they offer the softness of drapery with the practicality of a shade. Both styles of Roman shade also offer a wide range of fabric colors and patterns to play nicely with any style of decor.

For our our bedroom refresh, we wanted to add a bit of texture that would pair nicely with the existing natural curtain panels, so we opted for Gambrel Faded Taupe fabric with a blackout liner and cordless lift. As always, free fabric samples can be ordered here to start your Tailored Roman Shade order.

We love the way the new Tailored Roman Shades pair with the existing curtains to provide dramatic yet subtle neutral tones to the space. The blackout liners have brought a new sense of cozy darkness to our room. Since our bedroom windows face East, the early morning sun has been a problem in the past, but we certainly don’t have any issues now!

Roller Shades

Roller Shades just might be tied with Roman Shades for our most-used window covering style! Our favorite aspect of Roller Shades is the way that they’re able to nearly disappear from when ordered in a similar color to the surrounding door or window. As you can see in our living room below, the motorized lift Roller Shade is barely there!

In this particular situation, we paired them with Custom Drapery (more on that below!) for a window covering combination that allows for a ton of variability. The Roller Shades soften and diffuse light while providing a good amount of privacy. When the custom drapes are also drawn closed, it’s a near blackout in the space!

Custom Drapery

As we mentioned above, we love to pair Roller Shades with Custom Drapery for the ultimate in variability. Our preference is to install custom drapery in a nearly floor-to-ceiling length to bring dramatic height to a space. We’ve also ordered them with additional fabric width to allow for a thick, full look even when pulled completely open.

The extra height of the Custom Drapery does a great job of accentuating our living room’s high ceilings and large windows (above). Upstairs, in the family room (below) the roller shade/custom drapery combo takes on a slightly more formal look. We love how this contrasts with the more playful design elements of the space to keep things from looking too fussy.

Our friends at Bali truly offer a solution for every space and every design style. From classic to contemporary, mechanical to motorized and everything in between, there’s a window covering for every style and budget. We encourage you to consider Bali Blinds for your next window covering project! It’s incredibly easy to get started with a free sample pack delivered right to your door and their team of experts is always available for support and guidance. As always, we thank you for supporting the brands that support us!

The Roman Shades are cute! But any curtain with a grommet, makes me want to vomit.ReplyCancel
