The Weekender: Answering Your Questions, a Two Flat Update and a Must Read

An Update + a Huge Thank You

You have blown us away with your kindness and support, and we humbly say, thank you! While I was nervous to detail the problems we’ve faced at the Two Flat, I was mostly anxious that our tone may have been misconstrued. Instead, I felt this community come together to offer helpful advice and lift each other up. Our hope is that by sharing our experience, you can also feel the confidence to push through, but also give yourself permission to pivot, if that’s what you need.

I also want to give you an update on the kitchenette countertop debacle, and I wish it was good news. We received a call from our project manager, and he let us know that the countertop was cut wrong for the third time. We laughed. It was too shocking to even get upset; we just, well, we just had to laugh about it. They’re working on securing a fourth slab to fabricate, and until then, we looked at each other and said, Well, I guess this means we get to enjoy the long weekend, rather than finishing up the kitchenette. So, bright side?

Your Most Asked About Reader Survey Questions

We owe you another thank you for taking the time to fill out our 2020 Reader Survey! We had over a thousand replies, and we’re grateful for each and every one. Your responses help guide our content, while also ensuring we’re partnering with brands that are meaningful and relevant. Before I dive into my favorites from the week, I wanted to take a moment to answer recurring feedback.

I really love your videos and vlogs and want more!

For every person that requested more videos, we had just as many say that they don’t care for video content. This one has been tricky for us, and one we’re still navigating. On one hand, we love creating video content, but on the other, it’s a lot of work (like, a lot!). And because so many of you have told us that you don’t watch the videos at all, we’ve taken a step back from some recurring series, like Dear Two Flat. The more personal vlogs are our favorites to film, but it isn’t something we have a lot of time for – at least not right now. Note: If you do like video content, be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel!

Can you share more content about your experience as a mom and favorite toddler recommendations?

I’d love to! If there are specific categories of products that you’re most interested in, drop a note in the comments.

The Two Flat is confusing. What’s the plan?

This post answers a lot of questions about financing and location, and these are the plans for Unit 1 and Unit 2. You can also find a curated list of posts we’ve written about, organized by unit, right here! (This is always available in the menu bar, under ‘Room Makeovers.’)

Can you be more transparent in how much things cost?

We have a post coming up that breaks down the cost of one of our recent room makeovers, so keep an eye out for that! This was a popular request, and it’s one we’re happy to get better about doing.

I have a hard time finding links for various products. Can you share a highlight reel or something more permanent?

Don’t get political! / Please share your voice!

I’ve never felt more adamant about speaking up than I have during this time. We want this to be a place of positivity as much as possible, but this current human rights movement cannot be ignored. While we keep most of our views on these issues in our Stories, you can also see what we’re doing behind the scenes and how we’re working towards improving right here.

MORE CATFISH!

Okay, I’ll try. (ha!)

What Else?

Carrots are a vegetable. This is a must read.

Even in a pandemic, even in grief, I found myself commanded to amplify the voices of the dead that sing to me, from their boat to my boat, on the sea of time.

I’m searching the shelves in our home, hoping to find a place for this stunning faux plant!

My DMs haven’t stopped filling up with requests to re-link the brass flush mount we added to Unit 2’s kitchen. It’s so good, and better yet, it’s 15% off right now with code EXTRA15! (Also available in ORB and polished nickel.)

Our friends Meg + Joe launched their own wallpaper line, and it’s so pretty! See the whole collection here.

Have you checked out the Etsy x A Beautiful Mess collaboration? This stoneware planter and chubby footed tray caught my eye, and how adorable are these velvet headbands?

Can you please share the link for the wax bars you used on the hutch?  I’m thinking those could help with our almost 100 year old windows at the lake-fingers crossed!
    Thanks in advance! ReplyCancel

Of course! Here’s what we use (it’s a pack of 6, I believe), and I’ve also heard from others that use old candlesticks!ReplyCancel

Also saw on this old house (PBS) that a hard bar of soap does the same thing.ReplyCancel

Ahhhh…looks like Catfish is settling in nicely as your newest family member.  Looks like you are lucky to have found each other.  Have a wonderful long weekend doing nothing!ReplyCancel

Ahhh how frustrating about the countertop! Is this something that you have to pay for 3x over now? Or is it the fabrication error?ReplyCancel

    • Kim9.4.20 - 10:48 AM

It’s their error, we only paid once, could you even imagine?!ReplyCancel

  • Lindsey9.4.20 - 10:58 AM

Is this countertop like a crazy puzzle piece shape?! I’m so confused haha ???? ReplyCancel

    • Kim9.4.20 - 11:53 AM

      It’s a literal straight across cut with a sink. It’s baffling!ReplyCancel

  • Emily9.4.20 - 12:32 PM

Thank you, THANK YOU, for using your platform to speak up on the current injustices in the world. My theory is that the only people that stay “stop making things political!” are the type of people who support our president, knowing full well that his policies harm many people in our country, and beyond. And when you point out injustices and how to make change, they can’t keep their heads in the sand, even if just for that moment. Not to mention that basic human rights shouldn’t be considered political at all.
Thank you for being on the right side of history!ReplyCancel

“Not to mention that basic human rights shouldn’t be considered political at all.” ONE MILLION PERCENT.ReplyCancel

    • Jess9.5.20 - 12:26 AM

Yes, this! I’m disheartened hearing some of your fans are actually taking the opportunity to discourage you from using your platform and influence for *good* and to share important and timely content about this very essential movement! Like pipe down with your status quo b.s. and leave YBH alone! Anyways, thank you for standing up for what’s right. ReplyCancel

  • Annie9.4.20 - 3:26 PM

I love all these updates but I’m so sorry about the countertop!!!
Also, I would love more info on how to transition contrast trim from room to room. I love how you painted the dining room (unit 2?) all the mauve color and then have contrast trim in other rooms. How do you stop one trim color and start another in a different room? How do doorways work for that transition?  ReplyCancel

    • Kim9.5.20 - 1:54 PM

Hi Annie! I think it’s important to pick a stop/start point and STICK WITH IT. Choose the edge that you’ll stop one color and start the next, and be mindful that you do that in every single room. It really is going to be personal preference!ReplyCancel

      • Annie9.6.20 - 7:11 PM

Thanks so much!!  It’s helpful to know there’s not necessarily one right way! ReplyCancel
