Call Us Crazy

We warned you right here that we might as well go and call ourselves the crazy cat (and dog) people. After spotting this image on Apartment Therapy, we knew we had to have the same big head kid thing going on in our home, too.

It’s just that our kids happen to be of the four-legged variety – the kind that use their tongues to bathe and toss their cookies (er, dry kibble) on the only carpeted areas in the house. And after confirming with all of you that we’re not the only nut jobs that wanna blow up larger-than-life mugs of the kids, we went for it. Truth be told, we would have done it anyway, but probably not all look at what we did! Aren’t we crazy!?

So when our black and whites arrived last week, we wasted all of zero seconds popping them into frames – frames that required a special trip to Ikea pre-package arrival, you know, so we could be ready and all.

We hemmed and hawed over our top 3 picks since we first mentioned the idea in January, but we’re thrilled with the results. While they might not be the most mind blowing photos I’ve ever snapped of the three, they do capture each not-so-little personality just right. Seen below, top to bottom: Miss Maddie (the queen of this jungle), Jack (our regal man), and yeah – that’s Libby’s back end. Sans tail, darn cute, and born that way. Just like GaGa and this girl.

Each photo was printed at 16×20, and as we’ve been saying all along, they’ll be (fingers crossed) displayed on the top picture ledge of our soon to be media built-in. After all, our plans were kinda sorta built around these prints. If that doesn’t make us crazy, then what does?

Okay now, all you big talkers. Who else took the big, fat photo leap? As much as we talk about our fuzzballs (sorry, really), you know we’d love, love, love to see.

These pictures are fantastic! I’m slightly obsessed with my dog too, so I think it’s totally normal =) Can’t wait to see the new media unit!ReplyCancel

I think these are adorable! My husband would freak out and make me do this if he saw these. He is more than obsessed with our dog and the prospect of getting another. I think its things like this that make a home feel warm! I love it! I just wish I lived closer to an IKEA life would be so much easier. Boo Oklahoma for not having IKEA.ReplyCancel

Adorable. A friend of mine did something similar – a little smaller – in her bedroom sitting area and they are just perfect. Great job capturing pet personalities!ReplyCancel

i love it! especially the kitty cat dupa (polish for hindquarters). i want to make a few silhouettes of my furballs for the bedroom, i think, so you’re not alone!ReplyCancel

  • Kim3.14.11 - 11:51 AM

Emily, my step mom is Polish, so I definitely recognize that word being used around the home while growing up – lots of baby bottoms (as the oldest child). Too funny!ReplyCancel

  • Penina3.14.11 - 12:21 PM

You are absolutely not crazy, and I didn’t think I was either until I had a party and a few people were a little taken aback when they saw that I have an arrangement of four 8×10’s of Rider’s beautiful face on the dining room wall and a Rider painting in the kitchen. Thank you for all the Rider artwork!!!ReplyCancel

  • Kim3.14.11 - 12:55 PM

Ha, Penina, not only are we both (kind of) crazy, but I also feed your craziness by supplying you with more and more pet art! I didn’t even think of that.ReplyCancel

Thanks, Kelly! I’ll give the low contrast credit to Scott. I whipped up 3 b/w examples, and had him pick his favorite.ReplyCancel

where are the frames from, they are nice and clean looking.ReplyCancel

  • Monica Brown3.17.11 - 2:01 PM

Where did you get the photos printed??ReplyCancel

  • Kim3.17.11 - 2:16 PM

Hi Jenn, the frames are Ikea Ribba, found here: We just took out the mat and had to trim a 16×20 standard photo about a 1/8″ on all sides.

@ Monica: We print out photos through WHCC, but you would need an account with them – works for us, because I do photography work on the side and have been using their services for years. However, we have uploaded photos to Ritz and picked them up at a local store with no problem, too. Hope this helps!ReplyCancel

I’m curious about the source of the inspiration photo. I really love the featured room, especially that couch.ReplyCancel

Hi Kat, when I save a photo, I’ll rename the file from the website I found the image (so I can always link back). Unfortunately, I can’t find the Apartment Therapy post it came from – but I do remember it had something to do with large scale children’s photography – not room decor. My apologies! I’m still digging in the AT archives just in case though…ReplyCancel

  • Kari3.17.11 - 6:25 PM

I love these! We added our pups to the family gallery – pics I manipulated in photoshop with the stamp filter, then framed in 12 x 12 frames. Gotta add the new baby to the frame at the top!ReplyCancel

    Hi Kim,
I am first time visitor to your blog and love your work!
Could you please tell me where you printed your photos and framed them?
Love to borrow the same concept!!

    Thanks a ton.ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.18.11 - 9:26 AM

Hi Sishya, thank you and glad you found us!

We framed them ourselves using the Ribba style frame from Ikea, found here: We just took out the mat and had to trim a 16×20 standard photo about a 1/8″ on all sides.

We print out photos through WHCC, but you would need an account with them – works for us, because I do photography work on the side and have been using their services for years. oh my word. i LOVE this! i have been waiting patiently to see what you chose and I just LOVE these pictures of your beloved kids. they definitely capture some personality! I especially love that you planned your built-in around your prints :) I have hopes to get some fabulously large photos of my kids for our wall, it’s just too hard to decide which pictures to go with! decisions, decisions. when my talk becomes reality I will share!ReplyCancel

  • joni3.21.11 - 12:53 PM

love your dog! what’s the breed?ReplyCancel

  • Kim3.21.11 - 12:56 PM

Hi Joni – thank you! For fun a few holidays ago, we got a DNA kit from PetSmart as a stocking stuffer. Turns out that Jack is mostly Pit (which we knew), but he has a bit of Irish Setter in him. The results are one, floppy, skinny Pit Bull!ReplyCancel

  • Bre3.21.11 - 2:48 PM

I LOVE the large animal pics actually SO much more than the baby pictures, haha (maybe it’s just because I don’t have kids and I love dogs). I think it’s a great idea, and a little more whimsical and fun than putting up more people pictures. =)ReplyCancel

  • Kim @ Life Analytical3.22.11 - 4:36 PM

Love it! By the way, can I ask what camera you use? I’m in the market for a new(read: not crappy) one.ReplyCancel

  • Kim3.22.11 - 7:08 PM

Hi Kim! For these photos, I used my Nikon D80 DSLR with a 50mm f/1.8 lens. I know cameras have evolved since my D80, but I use this one more than my “fancier” camera – especially as an everyday bloggy camera. You can find them used on Craigslist for less than $400-500 usually. Hope this helps!ReplyCancel

Just came over to your blog from YHL and I’m in love! I love the whole media wall re-do and I’m obsessed with these pictures of your pets. We have 2 cats and a pit bull as well (and our one cat looks just like your Miss Maddie) and I think this idea is just adorable. I’m going to have to remember it for when we have a house of our own!ReplyCancel

  • Kim11.22.11 - 7:14 PM

Hi Clare! Freaky pet similarities! Maybe you can’t do the “built-in” wall of shelves, but you can at least get started on the pet portraits! I’m sure they’d love to be big on display in your rented home, right?ReplyCancel

  • Michelle3.20.18 - 7:31 AM

We LOVE big photo images in our home.

We have an entire wall filled with 8 photos of our kiddos (prints slightly bigger than yours) . Fur & furless .
& black and white all the way. .

    Love this post.
Wishing you all a lovely day.ReplyCancel
