Who Do We Think We Are?

Expert terrarium makers, apparently. Emphasis on the makers. The survival, however, is not our specialty – that is, when said terrariums are placed in our incapable hands. So it’s a good thing that Scott and I whipped up two terrariums to give as a holiday gifts, one of which currently lives with my mom-in-law in Cincinnati and the other on my grandmother’s console table.

While we may not have the necessary green thumbs to keep ’em up ourselves (although, our third attempt is at least alive, mostly, and surely you can do better than us!), we do have fun making them. And as a result, I discovered a new found love for Hobby Lobby, the mecca of all that is good and right in this world. (We don’t have them in the city, but a recent whirlwind trip to the ‘burbs introduced us, and we’ve been making smoochy faces ever since.) The vessels, rocks and preserved moss were found at the HB, and the plants, elephant and bison were picked up from Sprout, home of our favorite horticulturists.

Did you give any handmade creations this holiday season?

I freaking LOVE terrariums but they are so expensive to buy. Do you have a special way of making them? There is an awesome craft store in Evanston…maybe it’s a hobby lobby, on Davis by ridge.ReplyCancel

Hi Anita, you can see more on how we built our first terrarium right here:

      https://yellowbrickhome.com/2011/04/19/dino-battle-and-building-a-terrarium/

It’s much less expensive to build your own, not to mention, a lot more fun! You start your bottom layer with rocks/gravel, followed with charcoal (can be found at most florist shops), and finally your soil. If you’re unsure on what to do, we highly recommend going to Sprout on Chicago and Damen. The staff there are really friendly and helpful, and they’ll tell you everything you need to know. One of the most expensive parts can be buying the vessel itself, but you can find unique, awesome ones at hobby stores or HomeGoods!ReplyCancel

What is the evergreen/spruce looking plant you used this time??
I’ve found thrift stores to be great places to find vessels & oddities to add to a terrarium.ReplyCancel

Patti, we cannot remember for the life of us! We gave the plant species and care sheet with the terrariums, but forgot to snap a photo to remind us what they were!ReplyCancel

Hi, wow — did we ever! Both Cynthia and I made a ton. We wrote about our goodies here:

    and here:

And OH those terrariums have inspired me! I recently picked up five small old clear glass light fixture globes at a thrift shop, as well as some amazing hemp twine at another nice shop, and they are ready and waiting for me to get into.

    Thanks!!ReplyCancel

Hobby Lobby aka Daaanger Zone. So much awesome stuff there.ReplyCancel

My family of four (hubby, 23 year old daughter and 20 year old son) decided to ONLY give hand-crafted gifts this year and it was amazing! All of us agreed – best Christmas ever!

My son and I had similar ideas (cool quotes – unique for each member of the family – framed or on a painted canvas), my daughter did something different for everyone (me – lovely candles in tons of miscellaneous glass contains she bought super cheap from Goodwill, her father – infused vodka, her brother – fleece blanket) and my husband made each of us a bird house.

We all have crazy busy schedules and none of us thought we’d find a spare minute to make anything and we aren’t very crafty (unlike you two, Scott and Kim!) but we made the time and each dug deep and found a creative spark and we’ll never go back to purchasing gifts! Highly recommend.ReplyCancel

Susan, that is so amazing! We love that you did that for each other, and all your gifts sound awesome! Those are the best gifts anyway, aren’t they?ReplyCancel
