While We Were Out

Just as we have in years past, Scott and I toasted our five year wedding anniversary with a getaway – and as luck would have it, we found ourselves in Playa del Carmen (yes, again!) to share in our friends’ wedding day. We’d never been to Mexico until this year, and yet there we were, aboard a plane to hit the same destination twice within a few months time. (And we soaked in every, single sun-soaked minute. The rainy ones, too.)

Aside from days of lounging beach-side, sipping countless tropical drinks, cheering on the bride and groom and eating our weight in donuts each morning, we also took some time to venture away from the resort. We walked up and down colorful neighborhood blocks, made kissy noises at sleepy kitties and debated picking up traditional Mexican blankets at the corner trinket shops (we were so indecisive that we ultimately left empty handed). Before storms rolled in, we sneaked in a quick snorkel in a cenote – a big step for this scaredy cat – and spent a morning at the Mayan ruins in Tulum. For as many sun shiny days we we savored, just as many windy, rainy days followed. While you’d think that would put a hold on our day, quite the opposite was true; we relished in our spree of no responsibilities, often marveling aloud at how far away our spackle, paint cans and drills were.

We ended the trip with a not-so-fun flight delay (we’ll spare you those details), but 24 hours after our initial return time, we were squeezing Jack and the girls. We thought we’d come home to a construction-free zone (as we were told by our contractor), but a series of issues (unbeknownst to us, as we were quite literally out of pocket) set us back. Reality set in; Mexico was now very, very far away.

Setbacks aside, we’ve shuffled around our priorities and jobs for this week, we’re making it work, and we’re back to evening and weekend hustles. So, while we were out, what did you do? Oh, how I wish I could spend an entire week catching up on the ol’ Reader… what was your favorite post (yours or otherwise!) you’ve read in the last 7 days?

Beautiful pictures (!!) they me want to hop on a plane immediately! My husband and I are also in the middle of a whole-house renovation and the thought of ditching town for a few days sounds amazing. Your post was my favorite of the week, but I also liked my own post (is it ok if I say that?!) because I’m finally just weeks away from having a kitchen again!

Keep up the great work – you’ll be back on track soon. Can’t wait for your next post!ReplyCancel

Amy – holy smokes, that is IMPRESSIVE! I am so, so excited for you! It’s those 83 small projects that seem to overwhelm us the most, but knocking out all those large projects must feel amazing.ReplyCancel

Your getaway looks so beautiful! For our last wedding anniversary we went out to a movie. Clearly we know how to party! ;-) Maybe next year we’ll do something more exciting – you’re inspiring me.

Since you’ve been gone, I started a new day job and have been neglecting our blog while adjusting to the new daily environment. But we’ve been doing a little yard work (now that we have a house with trees and bushes that drop leaves and need raking) and enjoying the beautiful autumn colors:

Laura, a getaway was so necessary! Not to mention, a fun way to celebrate any anniversary :) LOVE the colors in your ‘hood; Scott and I should have raked our yard this season (the first yard we’ve had since moving to Chicago 7 years ago!), but with all the construction dust and wood piles on display, it hardly felt pressing…ReplyCancel

Happy Anniversary! Anniversary trips are the best. We’re only a few weeks removed from our 11th, and we’re already looking forward to our 12th TBD location.ReplyCancel
