Well, That Changed Everything (+ a Wagner Giveaway!)

wagner-garage-paint-01

This post is in partnership with Wagner SprayTech.

Our three day weekend meant that, in between One Tail shopping and list making, we had an extra day to knock off another to-do on the garage list! (I’m sort of joking, and to be fair, we did take off an entire day to relax, brunch and celebrate the 4th with friends!)

This was a big one, and you guys, it changed everything. We knew we wanted to paint the entire interior of the garage, and although we really, really wanted to go pure white, we also knew it wouldn’t be the best decision in an area that – let’s face it – is just plain dirty. So although we didn’t go bright white, we did go pale (pale!) gray. We landed on Zen Pebble by Valspar in an exterior satin finish, and we had it mixed it to 75% strength to take down the intensity a notch.

The job called for a heavy duty paint sprayer, and being no stranger to these tools, we were happy to have the opportunity to partner with Wagner SprayTech again! We shared several photos of our work-in-progress garage with the Wagner team, and they recommended the powerful FLEXiO 990 for the job:

wagner-garage-paint-02

We prepped the garage by moving large items into the yard, pulling any exposed nails or hooks from the walls, vacuuming dust, vacuuming more dust, and vacuuming some more. We also taped off electrical outlets, the garage tracks and overhead lighting, and we covered the entire floor with plastic sheeting. I used painters tape to get as close to the base of the walls as possible, and we were careful to lift our feet when we walked as to not pull the plastic away from the perimeter. The prep alone took one full day, but it was so necessary to do the job well!

The FLEXiO 990 attached directly to our paint bucket, and one end of the hose feeds into the paint. The hose can reach up to a 2-story height, making it a more flexible tool for us to maneuver around the garage as we sprayed. Although this could have been a one person job, Scott and I worked together like this: He sprayed, and I held the hose high above any obstacles (we gathered smaller items into the middle of the garage) and moved the paint bucket along the way.

wagner-garage-paint-04

For the most part, using the sprayer was simple, although the job itself was very large. We may have been covered head to toe in paint by the end. (Worth it though. Totally worth it.) We ran into a couple of issues with the trigger, which was mostly remedied by increasing the air pressure and lowering the volume of paint. There were times when we would get sputtering paint with the initial pull of the trigger, and a call to the Wagner support team provided us with alternate ways to remedy the issue. It was good to know that there’s live customer support 6 days a week for any issues you may encounter! Side note: This job required a disposable jumpsuit, eye wear and respirator masks. Safety first!

wagner-garage-paint-05wagner-garage-paint-06

We had estimated 5 gallons of paint for the job, which, silly us! There was a quick run to the store to pick up another 5 gallon bucket mid-job, and in the end, we used the better part of 9 gallons for one coat overall – plus a few areas of touch-up. While we had initially took a good guess for the surface area of the plywood, we had crossed our fingers that the exposed studs wouldn’t add too much additional paint, but, lesson learned. (Still worth it.)

As if anyone needs more proof that paint is the most powerful tool in your DIY arsenal, let’s look back at where we began:

garage-11

And here’s where we are today! (Never mind the window trim; that’ll get done by hand.)

wagner-garage-paint-07wagner-garage-paint-08wagner-garage-paint-09wagner-garage-paint-10

I know what you’re thinking; it looks white, right? In context with the concrete pad, it really does! Zen Pebble is a soft gray to begin with, and by having it mixed to 75% strength, it lightened things up immensely. Maybe we could have gone with bright white after all, but in person, the walls look warm rather than stark, and the overall vibe feels incredibly inviting – you know, being a garage and all.

wagner-garage-paint-11

In the last week, we’ve been able to cross more than a few things off of the garage list! We painted. We caulked. We picked up a mean slab of butcher block, bought a new exterior door and painted the cabinets, too!

Fix the leaky roof
Lumber storage
Bike Storage – got it!
Open metal shelving for bins + occasional use items – got it!
Wall treatment for cabinet wall (close up exposed studs)
Paint everything – no more bare plywood!
Reconfigure and paint cabinets
Install a countertop – purchased!
Epoxy/paint the unlevel/cracked garage floor – not this year, womp.
Wall of hooks/hanging storage
New side door – purchased!
Paint exterior trim
Re-caulk exterior siding
Repair/new garage door
Replace lighting with LEDs

We could not have completed this job without the help of a Wagner sprayer, and the FLEXiO 990 came through like a champion! The team at Wagner wants you to have the tools to knock out your big painting to-dos, and so together with Wagner, we’ll be giving away one FLEXiO 990 sprayer (a $249 value)! Using the Rafflecopter widget below, enter as many ways as you’d like. This giveaway is eligible for those located in the United States or Canada and runs through Friday, July 10th until 5pm CST. The winner will be announced within this post and contacted directly. Good luck and happy entering!

I change my mind on paint all the time, so this would be handy! I’ve repainted pretty much every room in my house and have only lived here for 3 years. Maybe I just make bad paint decisions the first time around?ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 10:13 AM

Nah, you’re just learning what you love. People thought we were crazy to paint our paaaaaale blue walls a paaaaaaale warm white, but after we did, it made our hearts SO happy! And all our guests walk into our living room and say, “it feels… different in here. It feels… cozier somehow?” Change is good!ReplyCancel

  • Kelly7.7.15 - 7:06 AM

absolutely gorgeous. I need to do this in our garage. What a job!ReplyCancel

I’ve heard great things about this sprayer and it would be the perfect tool to get us going on our basement renovation!ReplyCancel

  • Megan7.7.15 - 7:35 AM

I have a stack of furniture in my garage waiting for paint, like it needs to be painted in the next month to get ready for our soon to come second babe! We have an older Wagner sprayer, which my husband tried using last night to spray some base boards before installing. Unfortunately the sprayer sporadically sprayed out big globs of paint, so he ended up just rolling on the paint in the end. A new sprayer would definitely speed up the process!ReplyCancel

  • Jessica7.7.15 - 7:40 AM

I have been dying for a paint sprayer – this one looks awesome!ReplyCancel

  • Rachel7.7.15 - 7:40 AM

We are finishing our almost 1000sqft attic into my studio and I need to paint it.ReplyCancel

  • Mary G7.7.15 - 7:49 AM

My boyfriend and I recently bought our first house!! We are still waiting for news on our official closing date, but are so excited to get in and start renovating. The previous owners were heavy smokers and the whole house reeks of nicotine (YUCK)

Our priority is definitely going to be ripping out all of the carpeting and painting the entire interior of the house. I think we could definitely take advantage of a tool like this!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 10:11 AM

Congrats, Mary! Such an exciting time!ReplyCancel

  • rebecca orr7.7.15 - 7:59 AM

EVERYTHING!! It all needs to be painted. Cabinets, bathroom, 2 bedrooms, living room, and kitchen! I am ready to be rid of our paneling and wallpaper!ReplyCancel

  • Haley7.7.15 - 8:09 AM

This looks great! While I don’t have anything in my apartment that needs to be painted, my mom is always mentioning how she would love to paint their house.ReplyCancel

  • Kate7.7.15 - 8:14 AM

I can’t believe you posted this. Just this past weekend I was standing in our garage, that looks quite similar to yours actually, thinking “I wish we could paint the interior but it’s just too big of a job” You all made it look like a piece of cake with this sprayer!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 10:10 AM

It wasn’t a piece of cake (took us a couple days between prep and paint!), but we could NOT have done the job without this sprayer! Doing it by hand would have been… torture. Literally, it could be an official form of torture.ReplyCancel

  • Molly W7.7.15 - 8:24 AM

It looks so clean and fresh! Can’t wait to see the garage when it’s all done!ReplyCancel

  • Laura C7.7.15 - 8:27 AM

    Looks great!ReplyCancel

  • Merris Davey7.7.15 - 8:28 AM

We want to paint the exterior brick at our house and this looks like the perfect tool. We rented a paint sprayer to paint our last house, but would love to own one. I can think of lots of projects for this!ReplyCancel

  • Melanie7.7.15 - 8:33 AM

Oh my gosh. I love it. I love that you look at a space and just say ‘meh, let’s paint it!’. I recently painted my kitchen floors (remodel is down the road so replacing seemed silly) – my husband thought I was crazy until I was done. Next up is the entire basement – both the finished off space (dark awful knotty pine – ouch) and the unfinished – exposed filthy concrete and cinder block. I love love love the soft gray. Good call for sure. Makes me want to do a soft gray in our basement now….ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 10:09 AM

Holy smokes. This paint sprayer is MADE for your basement job!ReplyCancel

  • mara wolf7.7.15 - 8:42 AM

I have been helping my cousin paint her house. This would be a helpful tool. Love how your space turned out!ReplyCancel

  • Amanda7.7.15 - 8:43 AM

You should do the window trim with a pop of colour! Navy anyone? Hot pink? Beautiful orange! DO IT!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 10:09 AM

We have some ideas for a bright punch, Amanda! Not the window (although we thought about it), but something else a little unexpected!ReplyCancel

  • Ann7.7.15 - 8:43 AM

We are thinking of doing something similar in our garage. This sprayer sure would help!ReplyCancel

  • Brooke7.7.15 - 8:44 AM

Our outside is nearly complete after two years of projects — except the last thing on the list: the concrete at the base of our house. It is screaming for a paint makeover…would love to tackle this project ASAP with a lovely sprayer!ReplyCancel

  • Mandy7.7.15 - 8:50 AM

I marvel at your vision. This garage was a great space, but you are making it fantastic. I shouldn’t be surprised by what you have done with your house. But you are really miracle workers!!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 10:08 AM

Thanks so much, Mandy! It’s not us… it’s the paint. It changes everything. :)ReplyCancel

  • Anna C.7.7.15 - 8:54 AM

I would love a paint sprayer. My mom’s kitchen cabinets need to be painted and it would make that project and MANY more so much easier. I’ve never seen one where the hose goes right in the bucket of paint before.ReplyCancel

  • HollYo7.7.15 - 8:54 AM

The garage looks great! I would love to have the paint sprayer for painting cabinetry, and the interior of our attic!ReplyCancel

  • Meg C7.7.15 - 8:56 AM

I think this would be great to help us with our own garage AND to paint our interior doors. I’d love to do it in one go with a large ‘paint studio’!ReplyCancel

  • Tiffany7.7.15 - 8:59 AM

Wow! What a difference a coat of paint makes. Would love to get a fresh coat of paint on every wall of my house!ReplyCancel

  • Laura @ RatherSquare.com7.7.15 - 8:59 AM

We definitely need one of these to paint our kitchen cabinets! This is something we really need to do, and painting them rather than replacing them will save us so much money. (Hint: so will a free paint sprayer! ;)ReplyCancel

  • Dana7.7.15 - 9:03 AM

Looks great! The paint makes it look so fresh! Would use sprayer for everything, apartment, garage, attic- you name it and I’ll use it.ReplyCancel

  • andee7.7.15 - 9:17 AM

Come on rafflecopter! Baby needs a paint sprayer; literally I don’t want to paint two freshing dry walled rooms with rollers while 8 months pregnant!ReplyCancel

  • Teran7.7.15 - 9:18 AM

I have been dying for a paint sprayer for a while, but I haven’t been able to justify its purchase yet. I’m (slowly) gearing up to paint my kitchen cabinets, and I feel like this would be hugely helpful in getting a quality finish. Thanks for the tips!ReplyCancel

  • emily7.7.15 - 9:23 AM

I am doing a complete renovation of a house that probably should have been torn down! I definitely will need a good paint sprayer here in the next couple of months!ReplyCancel

  • susan7.7.15 - 9:23 AM

so much painting to do…! thanks for the give-a-way!ReplyCancel

  • Brent7.7.15 - 9:24 AM

I live in a gorgeous prewar building that has suffered decades of layered-on paint, on any wooden surface that would sit still. It’s a pipe dream of mine to strip it all down to the bare wood, prime it, and paint it right and get a nice, even finish. No more globs, drips, or paint chips flying into my coffee cup when I open a kitchen cabinet!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 10:07 AM

Now THAT would be a labor of love. And TOTALLY WORTH IT.ReplyCancel

  • Cimi Ryan7.7.15 - 9:27 AM

Our exterior needs painting as does the wood on our lanai.ReplyCancel

  • Brooke7.7.15 - 9:42 AM

Oh… I have been looking for a paint sprayer. I have so many projects to paint… Chicken coop, deck…ReplyCancel

  • Emily K7.7.15 - 9:46 AM

Our whole upstairs is kilz white, so it badly needs painting. A paint sprayer would be idea for updating our outdoor furniture! So excited for this giveaway.ReplyCancel

  • Molly S7.7.15 - 9:48 AM

This looks so great! I can’t believe you managed to tackle all of that in one weekend!ReplyCancel

  • Bethany Wellman7.7.15 - 9:50 AM

I would LOVE a paint sprayer! Your garage looks absolutely fantastic, what a difference. We’ve been painting our little hearts out these past few years, and are down to only 2 more bedrooms. Bring it on!ReplyCancel

  • Sarah7.7.15 - 9:52 AM

WOW – what a difference a coat of paint makes in that space!ReplyCancel

  • Danielle7.7.15 - 10:06 AM

Love it! We need to do the same thing to our basement. We are in the market for a sprayer! I can’t wait to brighten the place up. It’s so dark down there, even with lights. A bit of light colored paint makes a huge difference!ReplyCancel

  • GinnyG7.7.15 - 10:07 AM

We still need to paint the master bed/bath and guest bedroom. The trim is the deterrent to getting the job started. We already did our main living room and all the trim out there down the back hall. Gosh I wish we could use a sprayer to knock this job out!!ReplyCancel

  • amalisa7.7.15 - 10:10 AM

The garage looks great. Well done!ReplyCancel

  • Simone7.7.15 - 10:16 AM

  • Sage @ Plaster&Disaster7.7.15 - 10:28 AM

Holy smokes. We spent the entire three-day weekend painting an attic bedroom in our house white, and it was ENDLESS. I absolutely cannot show my husband your post, because a few hours into our process he asked if it would be faster to spray it and I said “shhh, just keep painting.” But we have plenty of other spaces still to tackle where we could give a sprayer a try! Your garage looks fabulous, well done!ReplyCancel

  • Jennifer Lynch7.7.15 - 10:30 AM

We also have a giant garage desperate for paint to brighten it up! This looks like it was a great solution, avoiding the weeks-of-mess I’m currently looking forward to.ReplyCancel

  • Jody7.7.15 - 10:35 AM

Not as big as your garage, but I’ve got some furniture pieces I would like to paint and and a sprayer would give them a really nice, smooth finish!ReplyCancel

  • Nathan7.7.15 - 10:51 AM

Our kitchen cabinets need painted! I think a paint sprayer would be the most effective way to get a good, smooth, finish. This would be perfect!ReplyCancel

  • Shannon7.7.15 - 11:00 AM

That looks amazing! Our next big painting project needs to be the porch, but I would love to do the garage someday!ReplyCancel

  • kelsey_tish7.7.15 - 11:00 AM

i desperately want to repaint our garage, we have some old pegboard up in there that smells intermittently and i’m hoping a fresh coat of primer and paint might help with that!

    Your garage looks amazing!ReplyCancel

  • Alexandra7.7.15 - 11:06 AM

My husband and I are planning on tackling and painting the exterior of our 100 year old craftsman bungalow this summer. We just purchased it and are sure it’s been at least 20 years since any paint touched it. It will likely take gallons and gallons of paint!ReplyCancel

We are about to completely re-do a great room. I can’t imagine doing this with a roller!ReplyCancel

wow, that completely transformed the garage!! what a cool gadget!!ReplyCancel

  • Meadow Bliss7.7.15 - 11:32 AM

My entire interior needs painting…except for my kitchen. I love my kitchen but the painting was tedious. Every room looks like a person who just turned 21 and started drinking for the first time that day. I kid you not! EVERY ceiling, floor, molding, windows and anything else not meant to be painted the ugly, boring, beige-of-my-existence wall color has paint all over. Help!
I love what you did with your garage. It looks so finished and crisp. Great job! Very motivating.

  • Daniel @ Manhattan Nest7.7.15 - 11:33 AM

NICEEEEEEEEE. So funny because I’m working on gutting out the old moldy drywall from my garage today, and was thinking about how nice it would be to paint it all out white before I do anything…and then thought “ugh, no, scale it back, you don’t have a paint sprayer and the garage is too full of shit to do it anyway.”

So your garage will forever be nicer than mine, but I will be ripping off your simple wood brackets for storing ALL THE LUMBER and it will be so magical. On the bright side, mine actually has pretty heart pine shiplap sheathing under the drywall (can’t hate a surprise like that!), so I’ll be embracing a woodsy cabin vibe, I guess. :)ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 12:24 PM

Yes, rip away! They’re so sturdy – we even used them as a ladder at some points during the painting process.

Also, all the heart eyes for your shiplap sheathing. Embrace it!ReplyCancel

  • Brooke D7.7.15 - 11:34 AM

My husband and I are looking to use v-groove pine boards to plank all the ceilings in the house we bought 2 years ago. I’ve always been a huge fan of midcentury modern homes and love the exposed beams and wood plank ceilings. That being said we will have to paint 362 boards (6″ wide by 8 foot long). Having this sprayer would save us so much time and produce a beautiful finish. Otherwise we have the basement ceiling which I think we’ll leave exposed but painted white like your garage, we have the aluminum siding to paint and all new doors and closest doors to paint. it’s never ending!ReplyCancel

  • kristy7.7.15 - 11:35 AM

My, oh my! We have a side porch that could use this treatment. Can NOT imagine how much brighter and more inviting this area would be if we could paint the raw wood. Like you, the thought of doing this completely by hand is totally overwhelming. Fingers crossed for a win!ReplyCancel

  • cully7.7.15 - 12:30 PM

yeah I should start digging into the inside of the garage now. we’ve still got to demo the eventual bike room that’s got water damage but the sprayer would help for all the painting we need to do all over the place. I like how much the white brightend up the garage, but don’t know if I’d go that route, I like the exposed wood too much.ReplyCancel

  • Erin7.7.15 - 3:23 PM

I have so, so much painting to do. We moved into our house about 4 months ago and have been slowly tackling painting every wall in it. The former owners had an interesting design philosophy – no two walls in a single room could be the same color. So literally every room (EVERY ROOM!) had four different colors of paint. We’ve been painting a lot of white to calm the place down. I would absolutely love a paint sprayer!ReplyCancel

What would we paint….how about a whole 3 flat plus a new garage! :)ReplyCancel

Our exterior needs to be painted like something fierce. Peeling trim and shingles are not a good look. On the plus side, it’ll be nice to go from cappuccino painted everything to having beautiful white trim setting off the dusty gray-blue shingles that we’re planning.ReplyCancel

  • Lindsey F7.7.15 - 4:31 PM

I JUST finished painting my stucco house.. by hand. And I hate the color. I could totally use a sprayer to go back over in a lighter color.ReplyCancel

  • Trilby C.7.7.15 - 4:35 PM

Our whole main living space (entry, kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms) could use a fresh coat of paint. Our rooms are huge because our ceilings are so tall, but maybe a sprayer would help us overcome the anxiousness we feel every time we think we should paint!!ReplyCancel

  • Haley W7.7.15 - 4:56 PM

Wow! I am in the process of painting every wall and cabinet in our home…this would definitely be a game-changer!ReplyCancel

Looks great! I would never think to put much effort in a workroom but looking at this made me realize how fun that could be. I’d definitely want to work in that space!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.7.15 - 6:41 PM

Oh, absolutely! When you spend enough time in a space, it’s always worth the extra effort.ReplyCancel

  • Laura T7.7.15 - 9:08 PM

I’d like to paint our kitchen cabinets. But I’m nervous to do it by hand and have them look uneven or streaky. I think a spray would work best for that job!ReplyCancel

Wow. What a difference! I have never seen such professional DIYing before :)ReplyCancel

  • Brittany M7.7.15 - 9:30 PM

  • Dawn7.8.15 - 7:41 AM

When we moved into our house my husband insisted on painting the garage before doing anything else. A sprayer would have been great! We are planning on painting the exterior of our house, a combo of painted brick and steel siding. We are looking for a sprayer, sounds like this model would be a good choice! Your garage looks great!ReplyCancel

  • Aaron Griffin7.8.15 - 9:55 AM

I’m also in Chicago and my garage looks very similar to yours. Did you guys have tar paper on all the walls? I’d need to rip that off before painting, and was curious how easy it would beReplyCancel

    • Kim7.8.15 - 10:10 AM

Hi Aaron! We didn’t have tar paper on the inside… we do on the outside though! I would ask a garage professional before ripping it off, just to make sure there aren’t any safety regulations or issues with moisture, etc.ReplyCancel

  • Maria S7.8.15 - 10:20 AM

Wow, I never thought about painting our garage, but this looks FANTASTIC!! Great job!!

I’d really love to paint the (unfinished) walls in our basement, until we save up the money to finish it completely…ReplyCancel

  • Mara7.8.15 - 12:07 PM

Our trim and ceilings are painted a drab builder-grade off-white. A paint sprayer would definitely make a difference when we take on that project!ReplyCancel

  • Sasha7.8.15 - 12:23 PM

A shorter answer would be, “What room or space in my home DOESN’T need painting!”ReplyCancel

  • Meghan7.8.15 - 12:29 PM

It looks so open and lovely!ReplyCancel

  • alex7.8.15 - 1:24 PM

We’re buying a house and I’m pretty sure we’ll have to paint the whole thing. The spear would come in handy!ReplyCancel

  • Jocelyne7.9.15 - 6:45 AM

We have the Flexio 590 sprayer and love it. It has made projects so much faster and the finish is so much nicer than painting by hand (at least my painting by hand). Flexio for the win.ReplyCancel

  • Candace7.9.15 - 9:55 AM

Paint projects that I really am NOT excited for:
    1) painting & installing all floor & crown molding. Bah.
    2) painting all the doors (because sure, previous owners, lets leave them just primed.)

Paint Projects that I AM excited for:
    1) Eventual overhaul of basement (including making a STORAGE SPECTACULAR room and finishing the main area with bar, game area and hangout zone)ReplyCancel

  • Emily7.9.15 - 10:26 AM

Oh my gosh. We really need to paint the exterior of our house (and our garage) ask this would be amazing. I think a sprayer would be overkill for our tiny rooms (the longest wall is about 12 ft) but for the outside? Its perfect!ReplyCancel

  • Fara7.9.15 - 1:15 PM

Our great room needs to painted terribly. And, we’re painting my almost 100 year old house front to back. So, that too. Might as well throw in some other projects while we’re at it!ReplyCancel

I really need to finishing painting my front fence. I started it 6 months ago and got 6′ of it done before I gave up. Let me tell you rollers really suck.ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.9.15 - 3:52 PM

For a fence or deck or anything that’s not a flat surface, you NEED a sprayer, absolutely!ReplyCancel

  • Terry7.9.15 - 4:11 PM

Just about every room in my home needs a fresh coat of paint. It’s been a while. As much as I like freshening the look. Rollers and trays are cumbersome.ReplyCancel

  • Ruth Lil7.9.15 - 4:21 PM

your garage looks great! I have the paint sat in a box waiting for me to paint my bedroom, and the wallpaper to cover one wall. Been putting it off forever, because peeling paint and crumbling plaster makes me think it’ll be a right PIA to prep.ReplyCancel

Help build props for a string band so we are always painting. does this thing have a lot of over sprayReplyCancel

    • Kim7.10.15 - 9:45 AM

We had a lot of over spray on the floor, but we had everything covered with plastic. I think it’s no different than most Wagner sprayers we’ve used in the past – definitely over spray (so you will absolutely have to tape/cover things around what you’re painting), but not too bad!ReplyCancel

  • Adrian Thompson7.9.15 - 9:35 PM

Almost the entire interior of my house is white. It’s desperately needs to be painted more colorfully!ReplyCancel

  • Karen L7.9.15 - 11:01 PM

  • Megan4.3.19 - 1:27 PM

Hi – just found your post on Pinterest and I know this is from a few years ago but hoping you can answer a quick question. Your garage looks to be about the same size as ours…how did you reach th top of the ceiling? What ladder was used? We have 8 ft walls so I’m guessing our total height is about 16 ft at the very top. Thanks in advance!ReplyCancel

    • Kim4.3.19 - 1:28 PM

I believe we just used a 6′ ladder, standing on the highest safest rung and sprayed upwards!ReplyCancel
