Vlog: A Tour Through Our Kitchen Cabinets!

We just wrapped up our big kitchen and mudroom renovation, and we lived to tell the tale! (I say this with a smile on my face, because in all honesty, we are thrilled to pieces.) We’ve made it to the other side – and thinking a little more clearly, too – but that means it was time to stock the cabinets. Organization is what fuels me to no end, and we were mindful to create a streamlined, efficient cabinet system. Scaling back can be tough (clutter is so easy, isn’t it?), but we think we nailed the balance between the must-haves and the gimmicky gadgets.

In this vlog, we’re having you over for breakfast and afterwards, we’re opening every door and drawer. Because who doesn’t love looking inside others’ drawers? That is, in the least creepy way possible, of course! (If you’re unable to view the video above, here it is on YouTube.)

Thanks for an awesome tour! Where do you guys keep a broom/mop/vacuum cleaner?ReplyCancel

    • Kim8.22.18 - 7:07 AM

We have those in the bathroom storage closet! When we renovate the bathroom, that closet will likely get reconfigured, but those larger items will still stay in there.ReplyCancel

Love the tour and your beautiful home! I noticed you had what I think were laundry pods in a low cabinet drawer in the mud room…if this is so please move them now. They are unbelievably toxic for children and as Lucy grows and moves around or your child relatives visit they could get into them in a moment. Unfortunately they look like candy, and quite a few children have been harmed do to the high concentration in the pods. Please store them above the washer and dryer which is harder to get to but safer in the end. If I am mistaken I apologize. Love your vacation home!ReplyCancel

We are 100% child proofing! We agree with you.ReplyCancel

As a LOVER of looking at what’s inside other people’s drawers, I invite you to look through mine any day, Kim!

Ok, now I’m going to go watch the video again and make notes on where everything is so I can finally finish planning my kitchen layout. Not weird at all.ReplyCancel

Loved the tour! I have a small kitchen and love my drawers for plates and bowls etc. The cork is a great trick! Wondering if you have thought of adding a “taller” container behind the trash container for recyclables? Seems like a bit of wasted space to have such a shallow container there- even if it is great for storing the bags! I have a similar pull out with two tall containers – you can always keep new bags under the one being used?ReplyCancel

    • Kim8.22.18 - 1:52 PM

There was definitely the option for two tall cans, but when we told our designer that we wanted a pull out trash, neither one of us confirmed how many. A little bit our fault, a little bit hers, unfortunately! Perhaps we can swap out the interior if it bugs us down the road!ReplyCancel

Love the efficient use of space! Can you share which Kraftmaid option you used to create the bench seat with drawers in the mudroom? Thank you!ReplyCancel

    • Kim8.22.18 - 1:49 PM

There was a drawer bench configuration option available, and we added a flat panel to the top to support weight (also from Kraftmaid and in the same finish/style!).ReplyCancel

  • Ashley8.22.18 - 1:40 PM

Great job! Also – my husband and I still argue over the avocado tool (totally UNNECESSARY!!!)ReplyCancel

  • Haley8.23.18 - 11:59 AM

Kim you can look through my drawers any time! And we have a whole double upper filled with booze! (my husband is a bourbon collector). You two cracked me up at the end.

Your house(s) are so well put together, not a lot of clutter, but fun touches. It’s a hard balance and I’m working on it myselfReplyCancel

  • Kim8.23.18 - 7:42 PM

Ahhh, so satisfying! Thanks for filming and posting this. I 100% agree with you, it’s so fun to look into other people’s drawers (with permission!), but to get inspiration, not to be nosy!ReplyCancel

  • soozey8.24.18 - 8:35 AM

Wow this was amazing! SO many good ideas in this little kitchen! You really do Lowes a great service, because I wouldn’t have considered Lowes for cabinets and now I will! All I have to do is show the video and point –I want that :)ReplyCancel

  • Karen White8.24.18 - 12:47 PM

Hey! I really enjoyed your video. My husband and I recently moved to the Denver area, where the housing market is crazy, meaning we are glad to have a house but predictably it needs a LOT of work. We are hoping to make a lot of changes when we can afford it, and as we have time (newborn + 2 year old plus two full time jobs mean…. slowly). Just wanted to say how much I look forward to your posts and that my husband and I rely a lot on your tutorials and info – you have excellent taste! We will probably model our eventual kitchen remodel after your Tree House kitchen! Thanks for what you do.ReplyCancel

[…] love seeing how other people organize their homes. This kitchen tour from Yellow Brick Home is so […]ReplyCancel

  • Kimberly8.27.18 - 1:33 PM

Love all the drawers! I had to sacrifice drawers for our kitchen budget but it worked out well since I needed enough space to store our crockpot, stand mixer, and instant pot.

Also, I totally agree about loving empty cabinets! There’s an entire dresser in our home that is empty and I’m in no rush to fill it.ReplyCancel

  • Lynne9.4.18 - 9:27 AM

Having renovated my kitchen last year I loved the video tour. I chose drawers over cupboards also and my favourite thing is being able to look down at an open drawer and easily remove the cooking pot I need instead of having to bend or crouch and wrestle them out of below counter cupboards. I love the cork liner you’ve used. I used pretty tea towels as liners which do the same thing, but they aren’t fitted to the size of the drawers like your cork so I may just have to be a copy cat with your idea. Because my kitchen is open plan to the sitting room I opted for soft close drawers too. It makes everything so much more peaceful and quiet.

And just to stir the pot – I’ve never in my 50+ years had an avocado thingy and never felt the need for one ;-)ReplyCancel

    • Kim9.4.18 - 9:33 AM

Hahaha, thanks, Lynne! We have an avocado thingy in Chicago, but I think ONE IS ENOUGH. Lol.ReplyCancel

  • Meg9.6.18 - 10:24 PM

Thanks for all the good tips! This looks amazing. We just moved into our first house so will be organizing my own kitchen very soon & this gave me some great ideas. Question: where are Lucy’s cute white spoons from? What recs do you have for non-offensive looking kids tableware? I’m on the hunt for my 10month old.ReplyCancel

    • Kim9.9.18 - 2:38 PM

Hi Meg! We got a few pairs of these in the peach and gray. We store the gray at Tree House and the peach in Chicago! Lucy loves chewing on them before/after eating as well. We’ve heard great things about Replay, and we’ll probably pick some of their stuff up as Lucy gets a little older.ReplyCancel

Love this tour! What size dog food storage did you get to fit that bottom area?ReplyCancel

    • Scott4.20.20 - 10:24 AM

Thanks, Paula! “>It’s this container here. We actually liked it so much we bought one for each house!ReplyCancel

One of the best Beer Themed kitchens I’ve ever seen! I’m wondering if you guys found it simple enough to use exclusively Lowes pre-fab cabinetry (it certainly ended up beautifully!), or did you at any point consider getting custom woodwork? ps. Thanks for getting some good Doggy shots in the end there!ReplyCancel
