Turtle Mail

My pile allergy may be coming to an end after all. The days of mail stacks are no more in the Vargo house, and once again, our love of flea markets has come to the rescue. And while our friends may have raised an eyebrow when we whipped out one buck to pay for our newest treasure, we were pretty sure we could put it to good use. One hour and a dollar bill later, we came home with this:

Who knew I had such a “thing” for turtles? (Personally, I always considered myself a penguin gal). But after scooping up my now nifty jewelry holder at the Vintage Bazaar, this is my second hard shelled find in a month. Our bills, notes, and snail-mailed-cards tuck perfectly inside the glossy white top, all while looking pretty darn cute. Perhaps this isn’t the most permanent solution, but it sure is close to a good-for-now solution, no?

Of course it’s original intent is to house your favorite potted plant, but since we’re more of the black thumb folk, this is our safest bet. Although, How sweet would this guy look with a crop of fresh cut flowers? Or a catch all for unattractive keys, wallets, and loose change? Or a holder for kitchen knick knacks?

No, this doesn’t completely rid of us our mail issues, but it doesn’t offend our counter top until we find the time to sift through those envelopes. And because our glossies and large neighborhood mailers don’t fit, I’m finding that the hubs is actually putting the too-big items where they belong – mags on the coffee table for later perusing and recycling the rest. Holy moly. It’s a Christmas miracle (come early).

On another note, a big, whopping thank you for all your ideas. We’re in the process of signing up for as many e-notifications as we can and looking for those tiny 800 numbers to remove our address from the surplus of catalogs. Phew.

I really like the idea of using the turtle plant pot for mail. I wouldn’t have guessed it was meant for anything else because from your pictures it looks like its sole purpose was to be your mail holder. :)

I really need to my mail situation in order. We have so much mail piling in the kitchen “junk drawer” it’s ridiculous.ReplyCancel

Great idea! Our mail ends up all over the dining room table. I may just have to steal this idea.ReplyCancel

Aww he is cute. I actually like that the big things don’t fit in there- like you said, that just forces you to put them where they belong.

In addition to calling the 1-800 numbers, you can try http://www.catalogchoice.org. Also, I think if you go to your local post office, you can tell them you don’t want to receive those grocery ads anymore (I cannot stand those!). You know, those ones that are as big as an entire newspaper and they come 2-3 times a week… gaaah!!ReplyCancel

I have a total thing for turtles. I think it’s that I am the exact opposite of everything turtle (although one might look in my bag and think I carried my home on my back). And that little gal is adorable!ReplyCancel

  • I have the same mail issue plaguing my home. What an adorable solution!ReplyCancel
