The Sweet Beast One Room Challenge // beautiful neutrals, wood tones, vintage rug and fireplace

the sweet beast’s master bedroom

How, where do you start when it comes to creating a home that you love? I was struck by the simplicity in Emily’s message on this Instagram post, via the sweet beast. (It’s worth a click.) Essentially, how can you successfully design a room if you don’t center the space around what you’re drawn to? It’s far too easy to see a beautiful home online and want to emulate it in your own family room, bedroom or bath, only to find yourself stuck in a state of frustration. What works for someone else in their space – their light, their room dimensions, their family size – won’t always work for you, and that’s okay! If you’re feeling paralyzed by indecision (um, guilty), take a step back. Re-center. Gather up those inspiration photos and really look at them. I mean really, really look at them. What do you like about them? Is there a recurring pattern that ties these images together? Take notes on exactly what you love. Start small.

Most importantly, never forget to surround yourself with what you love (you and you alone, friend!). Because as Emily says, This is how you build a home full of character and a space that welcomes you and makes you feel at home. (Also, the sweet beast is one to follow! Love her Pittsburgh home so much.)

What Else?

Can’t. Stop. Staring at Heather and Aaron’s all black kitchen. They killed it.

Remember when I said I wished I could be one of those girls that could rock a turtleneck? I ordered these in black and moss and now i’m watching the mailbox like …

I can’t remember the last time I tried on a pair of jeans and they just fitUntil these.

When we mentioned that we were on the hunt for a tone-on-tone wallpaper to play nicely with the walls in our Tree House sleeping loft, someone suggested that we take a look at Kate Golding. Ob-sessed doesn’t even begin to describe it. We’re torn between Canadian Shield, Sand Dunes, Garter Snake, Grasses Dawn, Juniper Summer and Caribou – wait, did I just name all of them?!

Speaking of the loft, we’re so close to nailing down the design for our new railings! We sent our fabricator photos from Kelsey’s farmhouse and Chris + Julia’s home, and we tweaked the details to fit our unique space, incorporating a safety gate, grab bars and hand rails for the ladder. We can’t wait to have the final plans in hand and share them with you!

I’ve touted my love for this cheek tint in the past, but in search of something more pink, I strayed from my usual (‘beam’) and ordered ‘puff.’ It’s the sweetest shade that still looks natural, and I’m convinced it gives me that youthful glow I was missing.

However, I’m still ISO of a great pair of (hopefully affordable) yoga pants! I prefer a high waist with a 7/8 length, a smooth sheen to the fabric, and for the love of Pete, I would really prefer it if there wasn’t a seam straight up the middle of my you-know-what. Help a girl out? (Please and thank you!)

Happy weekend, friends!

Came just to say that. I don’t even LIKE leggings and I have two pairs of them from Girlfriend. They turned me into a person that wears leggings as pants.ReplyCancel

Outdoor Voices is hands down the best option for yoga pants. All the length options and styles you could think of, plus free alterations if the length isn’t quite right. If you don’t mind a little compression their warmup leggings are ??.ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.25.19 - 11:15 AM

      I love a little compression, thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Shauna | My Pinecone Home1.25.19 - 11:55 AM

I just tried some leggings by Mono B and realllllly loved them! I like compression style and they stayed in place without feeling tight. They only sell wholesale, so you can find them in other shops by searching the brand.ReplyCancel

For yoga pants, check out Four Athletics. I love all the leggings I’ve purchased from them. As well as the tanks and sweatshirts.ReplyCancel

OOh, i’m intrigued by the Madewell turtlenecks for myself. Do you find their sizing to be true to size or do they run small?ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.25.19 - 1:00 PM

I’m pretty TTS at Madewell! I wear a small if that helps. :)ReplyCancel

  • Kylie Wutke1.25.19 - 2:51 PM

I second the girlfriend leggings recommendation! They are the best, they stay up like a champ, they’re supportive and not too shiny! I also recently bought a couple pairs of Hofi leggings (with pockets!) off Amazon (after Jenny from little green notebook posted about them) and they’re also great! I really wanted some pockets for neighborhood dog and baby walks, and while they’re not quite as good as my girlfriend leggings they are cheaper (and did I mention pockets???).ReplyCancel

CRZ Yoga pants on Amazon. I have them in navy and army green. Love them, can’t beat the price, or the instant gratification!ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.25.19 - 3:20 PM

I just returned those! So sad. I loved the colors (the olive!!), but the seam up the middle was precariously placed… maybe it’s just me!ReplyCancel

  • Madelaine1.25.19 - 3:23 PM

Girlfriend Collective for sure!! They are a good ethical brand, and super sturdy. Warning though, they look frighteningly small when you first get them but they stretch out to fit ~perfectly~ in 2 or 3 wearsReplyCancel

  • Kate1.25.19 - 3:35 PM

Old navy high rise yoga leggings. I have 4 pairs and wear them DAILY. They’re so amazing AND i have even been able to wear the same size through my entire pregnancy without ruining them. I tend to buy them on sale for as low as $10.

    • molly1.28.19 - 8:48 AM

agreed – on the off chance that you don’t want to spend $100 on leggings, old navy is the best. i use them for actual workouts (AKA not wearing all day) and wear zella/spanx/other high end leggings as ‘pants’. They have 7/8 length high waist leggings in ankle, regular, and tall.

i have a bunch of print ones (poly blend?) and they don’t fade at all.ReplyCancel

  • Lindsey1.25.19 - 5:56 PM

Zella Live In High Waist Leggings, hands down, I wear them every single day. SO much cheaper than Lulu and great quality. I’ve had some of mine for years and they’ve held up really well.ReplyCancel

    • Sara1.28.19 - 6:15 PM

Came to comment about Zella live-in leggings too! They really are the best- for reference, I’m 5’4” and the 7/8 length are perfect! I recommend them to everyone!ReplyCancel

  • Sarah1.25.19 - 6:05 PM

Prana’s yoga pants/leggings are my favorite.

BTW- you guys killed it with good posts this week.ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.25.19 - 9:47 PM

That means so much to us, thank you, Sarah!ReplyCancel

  • Susan1.25.19 - 7:28 PM

Baleaf women’s high wasted ankle workout pants – they’re cheap ($18.99), don’t show through, stay up even on round butts like mine, stand up to dog greetings, all the good things – except the seam is in the middle. I have 5 pairs! Oh, and also available on Amazon.ReplyCancel

  • Lindsey1.25.19 - 8:43 PM

Senita leggings!! They even have pockets. Just released a pair that don’t have a center seam in a shinier fabric that I am super tempted to order for myself!ReplyCancel

  • Laine1.25.19 - 9:30 PM

If you want opaque, different sheens, and a wide waist band, forever 21 has some nice ones now. I had 4 pairs and wear them almost everyday. I’ve also heard good things about fabletics, though they’re pricier.ReplyCancel

  • Nidhi Thapar1.25.19 - 9:49 PM

i second OV! i actually hate leggings but i love love their tech sweat leggings. so comfortable and i get excited to wear them. highly recommend. (also the waistband in tech sweat keeps them from slipping down, which i have experienced with their warmup leggings)ReplyCancel

  • Nicola1.25.19 - 10:34 PM

Old Navy! Tons of color and length options. Good texture, opaque, some have details like pockets or mesh options if you’re into that. They hold their shape really well and stay up and have a good rise. Not shiny like I find some yoga pants can be too. Great price point. Good luck!ReplyCancel

  • Amy1.26.19 - 5:01 AM

Hello, I’ve been pouring over the wallpapers. My first thoughts were that I can so imagine Lucy laying/playing in the loft giving caribou names ants making up stories about them. The snake pattern is VERY aesthetically appealing, and the juniper is super sweet and the pop of blue is nice. Just a few thoughts. I’m enjoying your process so much!ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.26.19 - 10:55 AM

Aw, that’s so cute to imagine! But then the Canadian Shield has all the TREES and we’re in Tree House, so… It’s going to be a tough call. We ordered a bunch of samples!ReplyCancel

  • Lee1.26.19 - 8:25 AM

My favorite yoga pants after having 2 kids are these Zella ones. I wear them every day and keep buying more so I have a full drawer all the time.
High waist, wash beautifully without fuss, no weird mesh situation…they’re perfect and actually pretty affordable.

Echoing many others – Girlfriend Collective is the way to go! Comfortable, hold their shape, never see-through, warm in the winter & not sweaty in the sunmer, and wash extremely well. I have 5 pairs and my original pair from their launch still look like new.ReplyCancel

  • Katie1.26.19 - 2:17 PM

I love the align leggings at lululemon. They’re pricey but feel like butter and have pockets on the thighs. They also have a high rise which is great for moms. They are thin so not super warm but great otherwise!ReplyCancel

    Hey,
We just did an interview with Kate on my work blog ‘Living Room’. Small world ? Check it out! https://www.realtor.ca/blog/postpage/7414/1361/who-designs-wallpaper-anyway-meet-canadian-‘surface-pattern-designer’-kate-golding/ReplyCancel

  • Erin1.27.19 - 7:24 AM

Athleta has contender tights that are 7/8. They stay in place during a workout but have cute patterns so can be worn while running errands. Good luck! Hope you find a pair.ReplyCancel

  • Martina1.27.19 - 7:10 PM

Can I hijack this, extremely helpful, thread with a similar question?
Does anyone know where to find good mostly cotton yoga pants? Preferably black capris. Old Navy used to have the best ones but now they’re see-thru! I need opaque (which seems like an obvious requirement!) but I hate to wear polyester-y fabrics.

    Thank you yoga pants gurus!ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.28.19 - 8:11 AM

That’s a great question! I have a couple of cotton ones from Gap Fit that I really love, but I hate how quickly the colors fade, especially since they get washed so much after workouts. Maybe a cotton blend would solve that? But in any case, I definitely suggest checking out the options from Gap! Mine aren’t see through at all, haha. WHY is that yet another thing we have to add to our yoga pant wishlist?! Ha!ReplyCancel

  • Rachael1.28.19 - 5:50 PM

We totally just booked an Airbnb in Quebec who has Kate Golding wallpaper in the apartment. https://latortuedewakefield.com I think the master bedroom has one of the ones you are looking at!!!! Click that link and then upper left corner click the 3 lines and then Stay at La Tortue de Wakefield. I can’t wait!ReplyCancel
