The Art Rundown

After landing on the perfect placement for our frames, measuring mats (and glass and backing) and gathering art, our studio gallery wall is complete! I think we both grossly underestimated how long it would take, but the outcome is better than we’d originally hoped for.

Now, I know you might think the Frog tape is stunning, but I assure you that the eventual chair rail will look much better. This will come in time; soon, we hope.

Every piece of art makes me smile, and while that seems obvious, I will say that it has literally taken years to curate this cluster (some pieces have been around much longer than others!). Since the studio will be the place I spend most of my week, I was careful and deliberate with what I chose to display – without taking myself too seriously. Scott gave input on my evolving choices, but the final decisions were left up to me.

Here’s what we’ve got:

1. Into the Woods, My Milk Toof: Ickle and Lardee are plain ridiculous, and the way Inhae brings them to life is endearing. I first mentioned this print right here, and sadly, it had been hidden in a tube for far too long. I want the space to feel playful, and this just does it for me.

2. My grandparents’ wedding photo: Simply put, they’re two of my favorite people in the world. I spent summers with them throughout most of my childhood, and I always admired this photo on Grandma’s bureau. (You can read more about them right here.)

3. I took this photo years ago on a beach in South Haven, Michigan. We were with friends, driving home to Chicago from a backyard wedding reception the evening before. We detoured, shopped Sunset Junque and spent the afternoon on a hidden beach – a beach with jet planes. (It was weird; trust). They’re plastic figurines in the sand – it hardly makes sense – but it reminds me of a great day.

4. Work Hard, by Anthony Burill: This was the first print I bought specifically for the studio. After seeing it in Kirsten’s house tour, I pinned it and scooped it within the first week of studio talk. (More right here.)

5 & 7. I have a (wonderful, I think) habit of collecting antique photographs. For the most part, they stay tucked in a drawer. In my mind, they’ll all be displayed in large frames with large mats, lining a hallway or cozying up a breakfast nook – someday. For now, I picked two to breathe. (The others’ time will come, too.)

6. White Bison, by Sandra Dieckmann: I pinned this last summer, and without realizing it at the time, it would bring our bison total in this home to two. (The original bison lives in our bedroom!)

Frames 3 and 7 are Ikea Ribbas, and frame 4 was purchased from Frames by Mail during a 20% off sale. All other frames were thrifted over time, some from our Pittsburgh thriftapalooza and one from our Grand Rapids weekend. The tiny mats for 3, 5 and 7 were cut by Studio 3 (thank you, Kylie!), and the rest of them were done by Frames by Mail (during the same sale).

We used the same framing technique as with our Piglet, and we hung them all using only our eyeballs and this trick. (Because math is hard anyway.)

And that, my friends, is the wall. There will be smaller art on the upper shelving across the room (including a few snaps of Jackie Boy’s canine friends!), and I have a few more photos I’d like to physically pin to a hanging wire, too.

How do you fill your gallery walls? Do you layer in art over time, or maybe you boast family photographs?
