A Kids’ Room Makeover (with Bunk Beds) + a Giveaway!

This post is in partnership with Spoonflower.

I’ve officially decided that collaborating with kids on their bedroom is more fun than any other (boring ‘ol) room in the house. Who’s with me? So often I tell Scott, I can’t wait for the day that Lucy emerges from her room and declares, I want to paint the walls purple! Will I regret those words? Maybe, but I’d give anything to bottle up the creativity and awe in which little ones see the world around them. I’m promising myself to honor that as our own girl’s personality emerges.

Until then, we’ll just help our friends’ kids with their bedrooms. Everyone wins! We partnered up with Spoonflower, an American made company that empowers us to embrace our own unique vision. You may know them as the place where you can print and sell your own artwork, fabric and wallpaper (which is pretty amazing in itself), but did you know they have over 750,000 readymade designs from independent artists? 750,000. So when you shop from the Spoonflower Marketplace, you’re supporting an artist, and you’re purchasing products that are made right here in the United States. (Psst: Make sure to read through and enter the giveaway at the end of this post!)

Tip: A bonus to working with a Spoonflower maker is that you can message them directly! Let’s say you’re looking to color match an existing throw pillow. You can reach out to the artist and request that color change!

Recently, we completely outfitted a room from head to toe with Spoonflower textiles in the bunk room for our little friends, Dahlia and Armaan. This refresh was all in a day’s work (quite literally from 9 to 5!), and it included everything from bedding to curtains to wallpaper. Yes, we convinced their mom and dad that a large polka dot wall was an absolute necessity. We’ll get to that in a second, but first, a little before and after to get you started:

And here’s how the view has changed when you enter the room:

And After!

Dahlia and Armaan recently began sharing a room, and as a result, their parents moved them into a bunk bed. The room was once Dahlia’s, and the space was no longer reflective of both of their personalities. These two are some of the most funny and kind kids we’ve ever met, and we wanted to give them a room that would highlight that! We wanted them to have a room, although shared, that they’d feel was equally theirs.

Instead of asking them what their favorite colors were, it might have been easier to ask what colors they didn’t like. Despite loving every.single.color of the rainbow, we narrowed the palette down to reds, blues and purples – and Armaan requested pink, too! (A kid after my own heart.) We asked how they felt about a secret surprise on the door wall, and they were game. These large painted dots caught our eye, and when we told their parents that it was removable wallpaper, we got the green light to go for it!

The woven paper was thick and strong, and it boasts the ability to hold up to scuffs and scratches. Installation went incredibly well; we pulled off the backing in 2′ sections, and then we used the smoother provided with our order to work out any air pockets. It’s also extremely forgiving; once or twice, we had to pull the paper back up to reposition it, and it smoothed back into place beautifully!

Perhaps our favorite part about this accent wall is that it can only be seen if you’re inside the room. Because it’s on the door wall, you’d have to be sitting on the beds to see in its entirety! It’s like a secret, just for them.

Remember when I said there were near endless patterns to choose from? Those patterns can be applied to textiles across the board, so if, for example, you wanted an entire bedding set to match your wallpaper, you could do that. We, um, didn’t do that, rather, we went with a loose theme of Dahlia and Armaan’s favorite mystical creatures: unicorns and dragons!

Armaan’s Bedding

The most difficult part was narrowing down which pattern within that theme we loved the most, but in the end, we found this fire-y print, which is a fun pairing with the painted black dots duvet!

Dahlia’s Bedding

As soon as we spotted these unicorns, we knew they were The One. All of the rooms’ colors were represented, and the pattern was so sweet, so full of whimsy. So Dahlia.

To tie the top and bottom bunks together, both beds received the same dashed dot duvet cover, grey flanged shams, heathered purple lumbar pillows and pink-on-pink minky blankets (so soft!). We were impressed with how silky the sateen sheets felt, and they got better after their first washing. The duvet, which has internal corner comforter ties, features a hidden zipper, which was an impressive touch! The only difference is the sheet set, with each one suited to their vibrant personalities.

A trick you’ve seen us use time and time again is the addition of floor-to-ceiling curtains. We chose curtains in the same linen-look purple as the lumbar pillows, and we installed an extra wide double curtain rod. By hanging the curtains wider than the window, the room also looks wider! They already had the pretty gauze-y floral curtains (which I heart so much!), a hand-me-down from Armaan and Dahlia’s grandmother. We layered them with the more vibrant purple curtains, and we think they make the cutest pair, don’t you think?

The Reveal

Most importantly, Dahlia and Armaan love their new room! We’re grateful that we could give them a space to call their own, and a bed so cozy that maybe – just maybe? – they’ll sleep in a little later on the weekends, too. (Wishful thinking?)

I didn’t spend much time looking – this floral caught my eye fairly quickly! We recently moved and are working on decorating – using most of our existing things and adding a few new. Right now I think the guest room needs the most help – Large Watercolor Flowers by Taylor Bates Creative for the duvet & shams with her Watercolor Leaves for the sheets would be a great beginning. Thanks for the opportunity!ReplyCancel

Ha! The timing on this post could not be better for us and your comment about Lucy coming out of her room and asking to paint the walls purple made me lol. We moved into our house when our girl was 10 months, and painted white over the pink and purple walls and did colorful wall decals. Welp it didn’t take all that long for her to start asking for PINK AND PURPLE WALLS lol. She has officially outgrown the baby room at nearly four years old and we are planning to redo her room this fall. I am actually doing pink wainscoting similar to your bathroom! and keeping the white above. Working on selecting bedding and rug etc. So fun to do their room once they have opinions and likes/dislikes. ReplyCancel

I have long been a Spoonflower fan.  I have been considering making a “recipe card” wallpaper to use in our kitchen — just to have family favorites on the wall.  Have you had experience with removal?ReplyCancel
