Small Business Saturday: The YBH 2019 Gift Guide (+ Share Your Own!)

Our idea of a perfect lazy day is this: Brunch at our local pie shop, followed by a quick browse through Lucy’s favorite all-inclusive (and woman owned!) toy store, and finally, swinging by the nursery for a tiny succulent. In a way, we’re absolutely spoiled with thriving small businesses in Chicago, and it’s one of the reasons we fell in love with this amazing city.

So today – on this Small Business Saturday! – we really want to spread that love. We’ve handpicked some of our very favorite items from the craftspeople and businesses we return to again and again, as well as small(er) retailers you may be familiar with (like our Tree House bedroom, below, dressed up in Schoolhouse bedding).

What Is Your Small Business?

We would absolutely love for this comment section to become an active conversation! If you’re a small business owner, please let us know:

  • What is the name of your business?
  • Where are you located?
  • What do you sell?
  • A direct link to your shop

Our hope is that you’ll have a bustling Saturday, and may you all find many small businesses that are new and fulfilling for you. Happy gifting!

Gifts from Small Businesses We Love

We’re a nonprofit social enterprise in the Hudson Valley of NY. We employ women who are winning their battle against addiction and they handcraft premium handbags and accessories out of upcycled materials such as retired military uniforms,  Broadway sets, manufacturing scrap and more! Our mission is to provide pathways to economic independence and sustained sobriety and in 3.5 years we’ve not had a single one of our employees relapse! We also do custom bags for men and women out of family heirlooms. http://Www.unshattered.org @unshatterednyReplyCancel

What a nice shout-out for Small Businesses! Thank you! I am Micah behind Blue Sky Design (I’m also a lady corporate pilot, so I couldn’t resist an airplane shop name…). My shop is full of Bullet Journal (google “Bullet Journal” for a fun rabbit hole!) stickers that help productivity and goal-setting! I know sometimes I need help to get my goals done, and I designed stickers to help others who don’t have time to draw things out in their notebooks! I’m currently freezing in lots of snow in West Jordan, Utah and eating french toast with my husband and two sons. I sure do love your site, Scott, Kim, Lucy, CC, and Jack!

This is so kind! I’m Hollis and I, alongside my best friend of 25 years, am the cofounder of http://www.hullabaloobookco.com. We offer heirloom quality children’s books with culturally relevant messages. We believe that books make the perfect gift and are a pathway to a kinder, smarter, more culturally aware generation of children. Every book comes with a personalized bookplate featuring the recipient’s name and your message for them and come “wrapped” in a custom bag or backpack. You can shop by tiered pricing or by a book’s Amazing Attributes like stories featuring characters with Vivid Imaginations or Kind Hearts. We’re two moms and we assembled an almost entirely female team to build and promote the site. We’re so proud of our little shop and hope you all will take a look. Thank you for opening this up for small biz conversation! I wish I’d seen it on Saturday. My husband and I own and operate NOSH Butters. We produce craft nut and seed butters like Pistachio Almond and Golden Cashew Almond (which has turmeric, ginger, cinnamon…it’s warm totally and delish with bananas or oatmeal or dark choc). We’re based in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, a suburb near Akron/Cleveland. Small business life is an absolute grind (pun sort of intended) and we are expecting our first child this Feb. (Gulp). Anyway, we ship, and are running a deal on orders over $40! Check us out, these make great gifts! ???? Thank you!! xoReplyCancel
