Rainy Days and a Sad Patio

Chicago’s rainy day streak has got me feeling down. Both of us, really – or should I say, the both of us and our three kiddos. Mood swings are on high alert in this casa, we haven’t seen the sun since March, and most infuriating-ly (is that a word?), our terrarium is taking the heat, too. How’s a plant to survive with no sun? And the chill in the air has me over exaggerating my need for bundling sweaters and blankets. It’s mood central up in here, and I’m feeling a funk.

I was a little relieved to hear that it’s not just my imagination; apparently, this is the wettest, most gloomy April the Windy City has seen in twenty-five-some years. It’s true, because the weather man told me so. But I’m not saying all this to bring down your Friday – and don’t I know that I should be so lucky that this, of all things, is what I’m complaining about? Getting to the point, I’m hoping my pissy pants rant will sway the rainy day, cold weather gods to get the heck out of here. Because, you see, we have a patio to pimp.

So, uh, it’s every bit as sad as we are. And last years flood-we-shall-not-mention ruined any pleasantries we could have enjoyed over frosty drinks since the patio (and office, as you know) was packed with bins, crates, and a mess of things-that-shouldda-been-in-our-storage-unit.

But that’s not to say that weathered table of ours hasn’t seen plenty of action over the winter. Over spray from paints and varnish have made their way onto the table’s surface, due to lack of careful drop cloth placement. I’m sure it was one of those oh well moments. We’d just deal with it later. Ho-hum; it’s later.

And those poor, rusty plant holder-majigs… Well, they’ve surely seen better days. To be honest, we’re not even sure if those liners can be salvaged. There’s a 50/50 vote going on around here (I say hell naw; he says yes), so maybe you know?

But! We have plans! We do! And we can’t wait to put ’em to action. This write-up is our personal kick in the pants. And we even have a head start (silver lining, Kim, silver lining…) – those pillows were purchased last year, thinking we’d pretty the patio (nope), and we even got an outdoor rug last July, still rolled up in the coat closet, awaiting it’s debut. As soon as those clouds part, there’s gonna be some can-do attitude around here. I swear it.

Phew. No more woe is us!, I just, um, am very frustrated by the view from my window. And that’s all. I’ve at least seen the sun this morning, and mister weatherman promises more, too. Of course I must remember it’s Friday, and we wish you a very merry one. Whether you’re hiding away indoors (like us) or picnic going in sunnier climates, please, enjoy your weekend! Maybe you could even share a fuzzy, fluffy story? Or, ooh, maybe you could share a link to something that makes you happy? Okay, Im’a put a smile on my face now. (See that? That’s a mood swing by way of blogging.)

  • I’m sick of this weather, too. Though, you should be happy its only rain in your neck of the woods. We had snow last week. Nothing green is going on here, no leaves a few plants have gotten the spring memo. Boo hoo. Hopefully soon! Can’t wait to see what you do with the patio. We need to do something with ours, too. Looking for some Kim-spriation. Haha. Happy Friday!ReplyCancel

Danielle, I said happy thoughts – not reminders of our beloved Penguins!

@ Amanda – thank goodness there’s no snow! As much as I actually love winter, I don’t think my heart could handle that right now.ReplyCancel

Can you believe a “pond” formed next to the alley and we actually spotted 2 ducks sitting in it? (Which I guess is better than swimming rats). We’re still staying hopeful, and so anxious to set up our outdoor space. I think we have the same table set as you.ReplyCancel
