Our Flor Attraction

Since purging our fluffy, grey rug at this year’s building-wide yard sale, our living space has felt… extra sparse. Not too long ago, we listed our goals with the tweaks we have in mind, but the in-betweens have us – and the kiddos – feeling out of sorts. For the last couple of weeks, our main room has been looking like this:

Jack is being quite the weirdo (what else is new?), not knowing where to lay on stay-in nights, and you saw above that he prefers the foyer Flor – well, unless we’re kind enough to stash his bed by our feet. The hardwood confuses him, so we decided it was time we make our move and select a new rug for the room.

After going back and forth on what style/type of rug we should search for, we quickly realized that in our pet heavy home, we should just stick with what we know works for us: Flor tiles. (You might remember our most recent selection, Sophistikat in the studio.) We love that we can swap out a tile if disaster strikes (so far, knock on wood – quick!, we haven’t needed to do this), and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them for what will be our third Flor rug!

As we’ve mentioned a few times, the living room tweak-fest will be all about toning things down – using neutral, fresh colors while allowing any artwork (and potentially re-covered throw pillows) to shine. With that in mind, and after browsing tiles online, we were leaning towards Roadside Attraction in Frost. To be doubly sure, we headed to their retail store (remember how excited we were when it opened?) to make absolutely sure it was right for us.

As you can imagine, we wavered on our decision when we found Settle Down – we were like kids in a candy store! – but after a quick poll, we went with our gut and stayed true to Roadside Attraction. And just as with our Sophistikat, we had two options. Here they are laid in the same direction:

And this is after rotating every other one 90 degrees:

While the first one brought a nice, subtle texture into the room, we thought the second option had a bit more funk (always a good thing, you know, in the right context), but we couldn’t have been more torn down the middle. Right now, we have this:

Update: The above photos were taken yesterday, and after just one night of living with the every-other-angle, we’ve already switched it back to option one. It was a just a bit too busy for our taste. All the tiles are now facing the same way, ah, well!

Our rug is 4×5 tiles (20 total), which is around 6 1/2′ x 8′, but we’re on the fence on whether or not to cut a few tiles in half (using this method, same as the foyer) to add some oomph to the width. In any case, we couldn’t be happier with the color – ooh, it plays off our grey halls – and the sisal-like pattern is just enough to be interesting but not overwhelming.

So, the rug? Done. Our backwards learning is in full effect, so now we wonder, what to tackle next?

We’ve been piecing together art for the big, blank wall (having made a list on our chalkboard back splash), and we picked up even more art at the Paris flea. We’re thinking that’s the next logical step – selecting frames and mats can be quite the task in itself – but first, we’ll spend a few nights enjoying this Attraction (har-har).

And the best part of our new rug? Tomorrow, Flor has a not-so-little something in store for you, too! But what about you? Any new rugs underfoot in your home?

Looks great! I may have to check out FLOR; I’m having a hard time finding the right size rug for my room, so something like this may be the perfect solution.. I assume you don’t have any problems with the tiles moving around? Are they reasonably plush? I’m trying to bribe my dog to stay off the couch by giving him a plush rug to lay on instead!ReplyCancel

please be a giveaway. please be a giveaway. please be a giveaway. carra chewed up a few (read: a lot) of our tiles back when we first got her. the missing sections have since bee concealed by strategically placed dog pillows. unfortunately, flor has discontinued the design we cuurently hae so we’ve been stuck (for a year and a half now) on trying to figure out which design to make the great switch to. decisions, decisions.

your old shelves got a fresh coat of paint yesterday. hoping to mount them tonight. happy new home, indeed.ReplyCancel

I love those particular FLOR tiles. We had Flor in our house when they first came out and they were great for pet problems – of which we have many – but I didn’t love the style (bright aqua and black stripes). We uncovered some pretty heinous potty issues when we updated our master bedroom this weekend and I’ve been thinking about a new rug ever since. This might be the solution.ReplyCancel

Kim – some are more plush than others, but they’re generally a much lower pile, great for high traffic areas and pets. The squares adhere together with big stickers on the bottom, and they have a rubber backing which really helps things from sliding around. We haven’t noticed any slippage from any of our Flor rugs. Hope that helps!ReplyCancel
