Our Bed In a Box (Plus Other Updates) 1 Year Later

It’s been close to a year since we completed our master bedroom renovation, and a little more than a year that we’ve been sleeping soundly on our Leesa mattress. Not surprisingly, we’ve received lots of emails since then from those of you that have been curious about our Leesa – do you still love it?, you ask. The short answer? Yes! A thousand times, yes.

But you know we’re going to dive into the longer answer, too, right? There are a lot of options out there for a bed in a box, and most of them follow the same model of a 100-day money back guarantee (after which, if you’re not completely satisfied, they’ll pick it up and donate it for you!). Not having tried any of the others, we can confidently say that we would, without a doubt, purchase Leesa again.

I think it’s important to note that this is not a sponsored post, but knowing that we were going to give a one-year-update, I did reach out to Leesa and ask if they would consider upping our standing promotion from $75 to $100, and they agreed! We realize that a mattress is an investment – an important one! – so if you’ve been on the fence, maybe this will be the little incentive you need to give it a try. The $100 discount will automatically be applied to checkout when you visit Leesa right here!

Before our Leesa, Scott and I slept on this queen-size memory foam that we purchased right after our wedding. (And before that, we were still using our college-day spring mattress whose only accomplishment was rolling you towards the middle, should you dare try to sleep.) To be honest, we loved the way the memory foam mattress felt, even if it did get a smidge too hot in the warmer months. After almost a decade of use, it was still just as supportive and firm as the day we bought it, not bad at that price point! Our biggest reason to switch to a new mattress was that for the first time in our adult lives, we had the space to make the leap from a queen to a king – a day we had long been looking forward to.

Our experience with Leesa has been nothing but positive from the very beginning. It’s soft yet firm, and if one of us is extra fussy during sleep, the other can’t feel a thing. (You know the old adage where you can jump on your bed with a glass of red wine at your feet? It’s like that – ha!) Scott is the kind of person who is sound asleep the second his head hits the pillow, whereas I’m more of a toss-and-turner until I can find my perfect nook of pillows and sheets. My back is constantly achy from a slew of issues over the years, and I find that with Leesa, I’m the most comfortable when I’m laying flat on my back, although I experience zero pain points from sleeping on my side (or my stomach), either.

A few months ago, our neighbor said she was thisclose to going with Leesa (after poring over the thousands of reviews), so I invited her up to our room to give it a test drive. The second she laid down, she said, Done! Of course we know that our experience is ours alone, but we’ve happily recommended Leesa to anyone who asks! Their 100 day trial makes it risk-free, but we especially love that they’re American made and for every 10 mattresses sold, 1 is donated.

For anyone who has been on the fence (or sent us a note), we hope our update helps you make the decision that’s right for you! In other news, we thought it’d be fun to take you around our room and recap how the rest of the elements have been working out, starting with our nightstands:

Above, Scott uses this sweet marble shelf, since the only thing he keeps by his bedside is his phone. Below, you can see I like a few more items on my nightstand – a few books, a scented candle and the world’s cutest alarm clock. We both use these peel and stick organizers to keep our cables at the ready; it’s this simple convenience that saves us from fishing for our chargers along the floor every evening. (I also keep my Kindle charger tucked in there!)

We’ve run through our fair share of pillows over the years, but nothing quite clicked until we purchased these king-sized down alternative pillows! They’re incredibly soft, but they have more than enough filling to feel substantial. With more than a year of use on the books, they haven’t flattened or changed shape since day one. If one of us is having a sick day, we’ll carry these pillows down to the couch and cuddle up; they’re so cozy. We pair them with a matching down alternative duvet insert, and we bounce back and forth between a clean white linen cover (this one, but sadly, it looks like it’s no longer available in white) or this striped duvet set from Target, depending on our mood.

I first picked up these vintage washed sheets from Target in pink moons ago, and we loved them so much, I went back and picked up a white set, too! I personally love when sheets feel crisp and cool to the touch, and these do just that. They’re relaxed and remind me slightly of linen (read: a tad bit wrinkly), but that’s the charm in them.

We haven’t made many changes to our room since the day we first shared it with you – aside from adding a few new sheets into the mix – but I suppose that’s a good thing! We’ve been so happy with our bedroom, that even as a girl who loves a good hotel bed, I can’t wait to dive back into our own space after being away from home.

Most of the items in our room are listed below (let me know if I’ve forgotten something), and don’t forget, you can start here for $100 off a Leesa mattress!

I have the Leesa, too, and LOVE it. Do you guys use a mattress pad that you like? I bought one that I hated because I felt like it trapped in more heat. The Leesa is comfortable without it but with a dog and a kid that end up in my bed, I feel like I need the stain protection.ReplyCancel

Ooh, I meant to mention that! We use this mattress protector (the Leesa is too pretty to risk anything), and it works great! It’s large with deep pockets, but it’s thin enough that it tucks nicely under our fitted sheet without ANY additional bulk.ReplyCancel

I can’t believe this was a year ago! Which means I waited a year to ask my question, whoops. We have a similar problem with our ceiling being uneven, and so I loved your idea to bring the white down and have a perfect line. However- I have original crown molding in our room. A) Do you have crown in the room? B) if not, do you think that technique would work if I painted the ceiling, crown, and wall the same white? My husband says no but I think it could work! Otherwise dark paint would look weird as our ceilings are quite sloped in some areas. I think it would really stand out. Thanks! This is still one of my favorite rooms of yours!ReplyCancel

We don’t have crown, but I agree with you, I think it would still work to paint the upper portion of the wall, the crown and the ceiling the same bright white. It will look a THOUSAND times better than dark paint that slopes up and down along a crooked ceiling/crown line. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to only go 3/4 up the wall with dark paint!ReplyCancel

It’s such a great solution and a wonderful way to make a statement without a typical statement wall or something. I think I’ll work on convincing my hubby! Thank you!ReplyCancel

Thank you for the update. I’m struggling with my current memory foam mattress and looking for an alternative. I’m looking for something that doesn’t sag. I feel like my current bed gets an impression that doesn’t recover so my back isn’t being supported as I sleep on my side. I want a bed with fast recovery.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.16.17 - 10:47 AM

No sagging over here! It looks like the day we unwrapped it on our bed frame.ReplyCancel

We’ve had ours for a little over two years and are still totally in love with it! I used to be a hotel mattress lover, but now I seriously am excited to get back to my own bed even after really nice hotels :)ReplyCancel

You said you slept hot on your previous mattress. Is the Leesa cooler?ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.18.17 - 2:40 PM

YES! I sleep hot in general, but the Leesa has a cooling layer that helps out SO much.ReplyCancel

Had my Leesa for a few years now. Still no rolling to center. Firm but soft on all my body parts. I never feel any pressure points. Most important to note that it keeps a perfect temperature. I’m never hot from it. Such a positive purchase from day one.ReplyCancel

How did you get rid of your old mattress? Did Leesa help you with that? I’m interested in purchasing a Lessa mattress, but I’m a single female who lives on the 3rd floor of a walk-up. There is no way I could manage getting rid a mattress on my own. And, those stairs — oh, my! Traditional stores will take your mattress when they deliver your new one. This is one thing that is holding me back from ordering a Leesa.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.21.17 - 11:35 AM

Hi Rebecca, we were able to donate ours, and I’m pretty sure that’s not a service Leesa provides (I’m also sure that’s what keeps costs low!). I know that in our area, there are donation stores that will pick up items for you, or it doesn’t hurt to call Leesa’s customer service and ask what they suggest!ReplyCancel

Thanks! It never even occurred to me to donate a used mattress. I will check out that option — although, I’m not sure how usable a nearly 20-year-old mattress.ReplyCancel

Quick question – the link to the roman shades is just to the general Bali site – can you provide details as to what fabric and style exactly you have? Thank you!ReplyCancel

    • Kim8.7.18 - 9:45 AM

Sure thing! They’re the tailored roman shades, but they no longer have the white fabric we used. However, West Elm sells a VERY similar style in partnership with Bali Blinds! You can see those right here.ReplyCancel

I know this is an old post but I was looking for information in your bed setup. I know you use a Leesa but I am wondering how it is set up. Do you use a box spring? What does your mattress sit on? We purchased a new mattress 2 years ago and it sits on a slatted platform bed. We have terrible body indents already. I am wondering if it is due to the slatted platform or just the mattress breakdown.
    Thanks, BethReplyCancel
