Oh, Sweet Friday (and So Random)

Since it’s a sweet, sweet Friday (and my brain is so focused on the weekend ahead), I’m feeling… out of sorts. Every night (at lights out, no less), my brain becomes a tangled mess with thoughts of the last 24 hours, thoughts for tomorrow, and thoughts for wishes, the future, and why won’t Helen just leave us alone sometimes? Scott calls it “that time of day.” Let’s just cut to the chase; I call it “need to share.”

1. In the coming days, my favorite man and I will be taking a little time away from the daily grind. Our two year anniversary is just around the corner, and we’ve made it an annual tradition to leave the every day behind. (Shoot, our week in Nashville feels like just yesterday). This time, we’re road tripping down the California coastline, and holy smokes, we are pumped.

2. Is anyone else totally annoyed at the cost of laundry detergent these days? Scott and I have been pinching pennies around the casa lately (due to random thought numero uno, above, and maybe we’re just, um, thrifty, too), but the last time I picked up the bubbly soap from the grocery, I threw a mini fit in the cleaning aisle. I’m thinking of making my own sudsy mix, via Tall Tales and That’s Church. Sorta fun in my own geeky way, no?

3. I’ve fallen in love with wallpaper from the fabulous Brocade Home. You may remember my jacquard pillow from the days of yore, but their snazzy wall dressings really bring up my heart rate. It’s too bad that we’re so darn cheap (a-hem, random thought numero two, above), otherwise I’d find a project worthy of their flock foil paper. Our current wall ‘o graphics satiates my hunger for now, and the clearance price tag on that project keeps my ticker up, just fine.

4. With November officially in the air, Chicago’s finally ready to give me cardigan weather and knee high boots. And although I’ve never tried a pumpkin latte (shame, I know), this may be the year I switch up my apple spice for what most folks would consider a familiar favorite. Really, I’m just in it for the whipped cream. And yes, I’ve actually been thinking about this. I’ve said it before but what the hay, I’ll say it again; I love you, Fall.

Phew. Congrats to those who stuck with me up there; you just won buko points in my (so-called) book. And lucky you (but not so much for Scott), that was barely breaking the ice. So. What’s got you spinning those wheels lately?

Oh my goodness, Kim! This post is why I love you! How funny, I wrote something similiar this morning on the Jubilee Furniture blog! You’re not alone! I’m not alone! Maybe we should start a club for people who can’t turn their brains off at night and have tons of random stuff buzzing around it! It makes us…more creative?, nuts?, hard to live with?, adorable?, never dull? – all the above?ReplyCancel

Susan, I’m going to go with “never dull,” and I think Scott would agree! Hard to live with… probably. More creative… I hope so! And nuts? Yes. Have a wonderful weekend and good luck with WGN today!ReplyCancel

I don’t know if it’s that I can’t turn my brain off, or if my thoughts are just as random as yours.

I usually buy laundry detergent from wholesale club type places with coupons (and since it’s such a HUGE container it’s infrequent and the price probably doesn’t relate to buying it other places), but I’ve been thinking of switching to Mrs. Meyer’s and buying it in bulk online.

I love (some) wallpaper, but I think I’m too fickle about patterens to commit. And a lot of are walls are textured, so I think that rules them out. I think I’d be more of a wall decal kind of girl for the ease of removal, but I’m cheap, so maybe a projector and some paint?

And to Susan – I think it’s all of the above!ReplyCancel

Cait, I’ll look into Mrs. Meyer’s too, thank you! And I think a projector and some paint (maybe in a glossier shade similar to your current wall color for a two-tone effect) could look pretty snazzy.ReplyCancel

You MUST try the pumpkin spice latte! You will not regret it!ReplyCancel

Have a fab time here on the Left Coast! But dress warmly–the coast is mighty foggy and chilly until you get quite a ways down there.

We get our detergent at Rainbow Co-op–it’s a local hippy store that sells in bulk. And we pump it up with borax and…er… is it called mule team? something like that. Rocketman does all the laundry, so he’d know better. I’m sure Chicago must have a place you can buy in bulk (AND reuse your containers!).ReplyCancel

Love your blog! I peak in from time to time. Nay for internal chatter late at night, but yay for vacations!

In regards to the laundry soap, do it! I’ve been doing it for over a year, (mostly because of sensitivity to scents, chemicals, etc.) and I love it! Not only is it super cheap, but you don’t have to lug home those big boxes/jugs from the store! Regular vinegar makes a great fabric softener as well (1/4 cup per full load put in during the rinse cycle). You can use Fels Naptha or a few other soaps (I use Ivory, but Zote laundry soap bars are great if you can get them.) I make a liquid version from the website below for standard washing, but there are tons of recipes out there. Hope this helps! Have a great trip!

Chris, thank you for the laundry tips! We’ll put them to good use, because there’s no way I’m buying another jug at the store.ReplyCancel

Be sure to hit up In-N-Out when in California… awesome hamburgers!ReplyCancel
