Looking Forward

On New Year’s Eve, a friend asked if I was looking forward to the new year. I replied with a smile and a yes, but as I said it aloud, it must have sounded like a question; there was a lot more yes? and a little less yes! I caught my inflection as the word was coming out of my mouth, and I explained that, for once, I felt like I didn’t know what this new year would look like. As a girl that loves a plan, I didn’t have one. It felt scary.

The next morning, I shared with Scott how I was feeling, and he agreed that, yes(!), 2017 holds some uncertainty. For the last several years, we’ve kicked off January eyeballs deep in large renovations. We’ve had to-dos to tackle and adventures in the making, and most weekends began with ideas in need of sketching and a notebook full of scrambled lists to decode.

This year, our lists are lighter, with a few more maybes and we’ll sees. We talked about the weeks and months ahead of us, and as we noodled on those empty pockets on our calendar, I realized, hey, that’s not so scary! Because isn’t it clear? Those unknowns call for more spontaneity – a word that I’m admittedly not too familiar with (but I’m working on it). We agreed: Rather than load ourselves up, let’s allow ourselves to move slow and steady. Let’s continue to work hard, stay inspired, and let’s be open to more possibilities – with our friends and family, in our home and here, on this blog.

It’s hard to believe, but YBH will turn 8 this summer! Countless conversations have been had about what our corner of the web will look like in the coming months. There are still rooms to overhaul and share, yup, but this year more than ever, we want to allow ourselves more kindness and flexibility. We never, ever want to give off the illusion that renovating a home is easy (I say, 3 and a half years into our own!), and as so many of you in the midst of your own journeys already know – wherever that may be! – it takes heaps of determination, motivation and time. A lot of time. And so, looking forward, we want to treat ourselves and our schedules with more patience. Instead of filling every teeny hole in our schedule with something (as I’m famously known to do), we’re excited to find out what might happen next – go with the flow! – and we can’t wait to share these unknowns you, too.

Happy New Year, all!

Pssst: The Pet Shop is back to accepting custom orders, and we have a fresh new look to start off the year. We’d love if you took a moment to check it out!

I love this!!! So many bloggers load up on big, sometimes unnecessary, projects just for content. In a world of excess I love and appreciate your honesty and scaled back approach to 2017!! I love everything you guys do and have been so inspired by your home and your approach to blogging. There’s something authentic about how you plan your renovations and budget. I have to give you props for doing more for your community and giving back also!! LOVE YBH and am exciting to see what you all do this year.ReplyCancel

Spontaneity…yes! I’ve been waiting. A long time friend. More ice skating, glasses of wine and maybe a brunch or two! LOL. Glad I read this post, as I’m uber excited to hear this, as you know. ;)ReplyCancel

That tiny faux-furnace heater is THE CUTEST. I’ve always wanted one but the ones I’ve seen can look cheap and a little tacky but that one is perfection. Now, to convince my husband that we need one in San Diego…ReplyCancel
