Let the Planning Begin

Big things are about to happen around here. This one is so big, in fact, that it will require a multi-day, multi-state road trip to complete. Since moving in to our ready-to-go vanilla, khaki box rehab a few years ago, the majority of our changes have been focused on furniture choices, wall treatments, mini DIYs and new bedding a few times over. Not that those haven’t all played integral roles in making this house a home, but this one, for us, is really big.

You all know our bright and poppy kelly green wall that frames our “entertainment center” of sorts? It’s soon to be slathered with the same Behr’s Winterfresh paint we recently extended into our kitchen, and the same color that’s already on the adjacent wall, there on the left. (But the color lovers in us have the entry wall staying put, and wouldn’t you know Kim has ideas coming out her ears for color injection elsewhere.)

How, you might ask, does painting one wall a different color constitute a gigantic project? (Drum roll, please.) The wall will soon house a fully custom, built-in media and storage wall. You may have seen a little tease of this project a while back, and a few other small mentions that Kim’s been tossing around lately. Of course that meant switching a few things up, but more on that down the road.

You might remember our friend Patti from a while back, and together with her husband, Ross, they’ve graciously offered to assist us with our undertaking. Ross is an incredible woodworker and has a home wood shop worth drooling over. As you can imagine, I’m jumping up and down with excitement to spend a weekend in there while learning a few things from the master. The catch? They’re in Cincinnati and we’re here in blizzard-ville, which is where that road trip comes in to play.

This is one of Patti’s earlier designs based on some preliminary thoughts and measurements, but you get the idea. The new media wall will feature hidden storage for our turntable, stereo, and Playstation, and open spaces for our vinyl collection, books, pet portraits, sequin bunnies, and probably a few more things Kim hasn’t even told me about yet. In addition to storing all of that stuff in a sleek new package, we’re also designing this bad boy with integrated cable management and a hidden power supply. You’ll never see a wire again. Nice.

As you can see from the sketch, the unit will taper inward toward the top, and also feature open ended shelving to keep things light and breezy as opposed to looking like a monolith. We’ve also toyed with the idea of integrating some LED lighting below the unit or on some of the upper shelving to keep things bright. Time will tell.

So there you go. Our first (assisted) foray into custom furniture. We’re really excited, and also a little nervous. Is anyone willing to share some tips or a quick story about your first time? Let’s hear them. We need you.

Great design! I’m really excited to see how it turns out!
We haven’t commissioned any custom furniture… YET. We have a lot of built-in work planned for our attic addition, whenever we get to it. And a few pieces of custom furniture we’d like to eventually have made. Some day we’ll be ready to tackle it! Ugh, renovations are exhausting!ReplyCancel
