Kitty Bowls

There’s a reason why the kitty’s bowls don’t match. After weeks of 2 AM panic attacks to the sound of crashing porcelain, we eventually had to forego the sweet duo of our cute, flowered bowls. And while we love her dearly, we can blame Maddie for this. Due to her penchant for scooping water with her paws (which would be adorable if it didn’t result in soggy wood floors), each swoop inched her bowl closer to the edge of our windowsill, and ultimately resulted in it’s untimely death. Enter the ugly green melamine salsa bowl.

As you can imagine, we weren’t very excited about the new look. And as you know, it’s those little things, right? Which is why after scouring the world wide web, I finally settled on this simple melamine-crash-proof 3-part server from our friends at Crate & Barrel.

Although I would have prefered the sleeker porcelain version, I figured the melamine-cousin of our ugly green salsa bowl would better survive any future crashes. I learned my lesson, after all. And while I love Miss Maddie dearly, I just can’t trust her. So to really show her some tough love, I used a swatch of (male) velcro on the bottomside of the middle partition (and the female counterpart directly on the windowsill) , which has proven to be plenty strong to hold up to a paw whack or two.

The verdict? I’d give it two thumbs up. Four, if we’re counting Scott (which I totally meant to). I’ve actually seen my girl in all her water-paw-lickin’ glory, and the new serving dish doesn’t budge. Plus, how sweet is this?

Finally, we’re all happy. Libby no longer has to share with her sister, and the hubs and I no longer wake up to cold puddles on our bare feet. Phew.

Any other zoo-like households dealing with wacky personalities? Shoot, this is just one of our many. But oh, how we love them still. There’s just no escaping my daily kisses, bowl crashing or not.

    It’s a kitty buffet!

My kitties would never drink out of their own water dish. They would only use the dog dish. So we just got rid of it and bought one giant water dish that everyone uses.ReplyCancel

Danielle, what is it with picky, picky kitties? They definitely train us, and not the other way around.ReplyCancel

Oh SO adorable. Makes me want a cat. :)ReplyCancel

  • How did you get such cute model cats?

I feel bad because my new puppy still uses random Fiesta bowls because we haven’t bought him his own set yet… I’m a bad mom.ReplyCancel

Ohhhh man, I could write a book about my cat Diego. Like you so aptly stated… I love him, but I don’t trust him. He is truly a reincarnated teenage boy.ReplyCancel

Kasey, you’re not a bad mom, perhaps a picky one? Jack is still using his puppy bowls. Every time we attempt to purchase something more awesome, we either 1) can’t justify spending that much or 2) can’t believe how ugly dog bowls are!ReplyCancel

That’s actually a pretty clever solution! Our cats have broken several dishes — one for the same reason, we have a cat who scoops her water and a rounded bowl do not go together. The other involves a lamp being pushed off and onto the dishes, who knows why but it was the cat!

So we moved to very wide flat dishes, but with 3 cats having that three bowl C&B dish makes way more sense. :)ReplyCancel

Ha ha! I LOVE this post – and the great idea!! My feline son Luk is just as troublesome when it comes to his waterbowl. I have finally settled on an EXTRA large BEER MUG because it’s the only thing heavy enough to not be knocked down during his daily excercise routine (chasing his jingle ball around the apt). Because I live in an open space, it’s hard to confine him to one single room while he plays = water spillage. I hadn’t considered Velcro, however. Looks like I’ll finally be able to stop answering the question, “Why do you have a beer mug on your floor?”ReplyCancel

Natalia, that beer mug idea sounds mighty tasty at 4PM on a Friday… Oh, but we’re talking about the cat. :)ReplyCancel

Our girl Samantha will only drink out of the tub faucet and loudly meows for us to turn it on whenever we set foot in the bathroom. And she makes it difficult to sleep in on the weekends. If it’s after 6am, she will repeatedly nudge us awake with her paw. But the good Lord knows I love that cat!ReplyCancel

Libby is a dead-ringer for my Junebug, down to the way her hair furrows on her head and neck. Does she have a patch of white on her chest?

I had similar problems with messy eaters, but found a solution with a couple of round chip and dip trays. I put the food or water in a bowl, and place the bowl in the dip compartment. The kits put their front paws in the chip part (cute!) to eat or drink, so most of the food and water stays off my floors.ReplyCancel

Hi Terri, no patch of white on the Lib-ster. She’s actually a tail-less breed called Manx. We love that she kind of resembles a koala bear due to her lack of tail!ReplyCancel
