Kicking Off Lucy’s Purple + Pink Unicorn Bedroom

Lucy turns 4 today, and we’re celebrating by kicking off the design of her purple and pink unicorn big girl bedroom! This is how we’re making it happen.

As I sat down to officially kick off Lucy’s Big Girl Bedroom – AKA the ‘Pink and Purple Unicorn Room!’ – I had an urge to re-read her birth story, and here I am now, wondering HOW she’s 4. Today, Lucy turns 4! I still think of her as my tiny baby, with a fuzzy head and insatiable appetite. Instead, she’s growing out of all her pants, insisting on salami for dinner every night, and requesting a purple bedroom with stars, flowers and rainbows.

Choosing Items for a Unicorn Room

We want to give her all those things, in a way that she can grow with. As Scott likes to say, ‘It doesn’t have to be so on-the-nose.’ Lucy has been loving helping us make choices – I’ll ask her, ‘This or that?’ – and to set everyone up for success, we’ll narrow down my favorites first, knowing that we’ll also love anything she chooses. Daily, she reminds us that purple is her first choice for wall color, and she excitedly chose these unicorn sheets. Keeping with the theme, we’re also choosing items with texture and star patterns. Luster sheens, soft velvet and shiny brass are a nod to the whimsical animal, and we’re grounding it all with leather and linen – or earth tones, as I tell Lucy.

The images above and below are the direction we’re heading, although since creating the mood board (below), we found a gorgeous antique mirror that will replace this arched brass mirror. Most of the artwork from her nursery will – I think – find a place in the new design, although with slight modifications. (I’m thinking of changing one of her paint-by-number horse paintings into a unicorn!) You’ll also notice the use of white and cream, but again, there are silky sheens and tufted details that elevate the design, perfect for a child, teen and beyond.

The Perfect Purple Paint

Of course we realize that Lucy’s tastes will change over time, and as she gets older, we will welcome her ideas and value her opinion. For now, I don’t know who’s more excited about her room makeover – her or me! She loves when I ask her questions, and she gets a kick out of flipping through my paint decks. That said, her ideas and tastes are really, really stretching my creative muscles, and I find myself enjoying this process so much!

This brings me to paint. PAINT! Her request for purple walls has been my biggest challenge, and as much as my heart was being pulled towards shades of blush, I promised her (as much as myself) that she will get that purple room. I love that she wants to be creative with me, and I will one-hundred percent feed that passion as much as I can. After sifting through close to 50 shades of purple, we landed on Valspar’s Mellow Mauve! (I have to laugh at the name, because mauve would imply a pinky-er shade, but I have to give myself a little bit of credit for diving fully into my purple promise.)

I mean, this is totally purple, right?

We’re Adding a Lofted Bed, Too!

But I’m saving the best for last, because we’re adding a lofted bed to her room, too! Hands down, Scott is most excited for this part of the project. We’re keeping the design simple, but it will certainly be impactful. Lucy’s room is narrow at just 7′ wide, so we’ll be able to stretch the loft bed design from wall to wall, giving it a truly custom look. Lucy has been lusting for a bunk bed for as long as we’ve been planning her room, and I totally get it. As a kid, who doesn’t love a bunk bed? Our hope is that the loft bed will grow with her, allowing for space below for a desk or small sofa as she goes from a toddler to a little kid to a tween – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves (my heart can’t handle it!). More on that as those plans unfold!

In the meantime, her room will get painted next week, and we have a fun design ‘hack’ for the starry lighting we’re adding to the ceiling. There will be a lot of fun little details we’ll be injecting to the space, and we’ll take you along for every step of the ride on Instagram @yellowbrickhome, with big updates unfolding on the blog as well!

This looks like so much fun! I love the luxe textures and how you are taking her theme and making it flexible for different ages and stages. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!ReplyCancel

Gorgeous shade of purple! Such sweet parents! I wanted a purple room when I was a kid. My parents persuaded me to choose “Carolina Blue” for the walls instead. It was a lovely color. I did have some accents of purple in the accessories. My brother & sister-in-law let their daughter choose the paint for her room when she was 4. She chose magenta! They even put it on the ceiling! Boy was that a bright room! Looking forward to seeing your finished big girl room!ReplyCancel

I wasn’t able to choose my own paint color until I was 12? 13? I chose the brightest aqua imaginable! I bet the magenta room was FUN though, haha.ReplyCancel

I was offered the opportunity to choose my wall color when I was around 13, but when I insisted on black, my mom took the offer back! She let me get black blinds instead. Boring.ReplyCancel

Haha, I had a friend with a black room in high school. I thought she was SO COOL.ReplyCancel

Big props for giving Lucy choices in HER color, she will love & remember it. My daughters had some “unique” choices (especially the teal walls with hand medallions & sari fabric draped above the bed) and were so happy & proud of their rooms. Now they have more predictable design choices, and are giving their kids the same joy of helping with room design. My 4yo grandson has a “space & planets” too with two navy walls and he’s so proud of it.
Allow your kids to make some of these decisions, it’s only paint. ReplyCancel

Happy Birthday Lucy! I’m so excited to see (and kinda jealous of) your big girl room. ????ReplyCancel

Thank you for being on board with her love of purple! ???? I was that kid and nothing made me happier then when my mom let me paint my room purple (although mine was much more Lisa Frank purple lol)! Even just a few years ago a landlord let me repaint a horrible red wall in a gorgeous purple. So kudos to Lucy on such a great favorite color! ReplyCancel

Happy birthday, Lucy!!  This room will be magical – Can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!ReplyCancel

Hi Kim, your ideas seam so nice and it will be surely a wonderful room as all your rooms. I really do not want to make you unsure and I am sure you are making the loft bed as safe as possible. But are you really sure about the loft bed? I mean, here in Germany they do not recommend any loft bed for kids younger than 6. I am a mom as well am I know that little kids can climb like profis. I guess the main problem is the half sleep toilet visit in the middle of the night. A great alternative is to use the loft as a play space until she is older and put a “cave” sleep place under the loft.ReplyCancel

    • Scott1.13.22 - 10:12 AM

Thanks Elisa! You’re spot on that Lucy will be using the loft only as a play space for now. There will be a railing installed as well, but Lucy won’t actually sleep in it until we’re confident that she’s ready. Thank you for your concern!ReplyCancel

I’m really loving everyone’s comments about the design choices they were “allowed” to make in their own rooms. It seems to REALLY resonate! I was allowed to choose the wallpaper for my childhood room when I was about 6 and got to go to, like, some sort of local design place with books of wallpapers… I couldn’t decide between two (very laura ashley-type) small scale florals… they were in the same collection (or must have been because elements in them match) so my dad said why don’t we do chair rail and have one above and one below…MY MIND WAS BLOWN. In retrospect it’s so dang sweet. Like how easy to say “no”? And how impactful to give the magic of a creative yes! What a gift my dad gave to me and you’re giving to Miss Lucy. The wallpaper is still like that in my old room and it still looks pretty good!ReplyCancel

I tried something similar with my daughter:  working with her chosen theme, with her chosen colors, and offering her pre-approved choices.  Her room came out super cute and I loved it, and with in a year she was sobbing saying it was all my taste and not hers, even though at the time she seemed to like it. Hopefully, it will turn out better for you, but be prepared to have less control and input as she gets older.  ReplyCancel

I painted my bedroom purple when I was in middle school and loved it! I did Farrow and Ball’s Brassica for my 3 yo daughter and every person who has been in her room LOVES that color. It’s got more gray in it and a beautiful depth that tips it more calm and classic rather than childish, and it changes through the day so beautifully. Works great with teal, greens, white, black, ballet pink. ReplyCancel
