It Just Keeps Going and Going

While our home is continually tweaked and edited along the way, our small art wall – trailing up the left side of our front door – tends to get the most fussing. Our addiction to sweet, tiny trinkets has been carefully curated (hi, fancy pants), and alongside favorites picked up from fleas and fairs are handmade sentiments from family, friends, and (shucks) yours truly. After we added the letterpress block, it was looking like this:

But after finally painting a few portraits of our fuzzy kiddos (two out of three!), our art shifted again. It’s not a huge difference, but to make way for Jack and Miss Libs, items were bumped onwards and upwards.

And when the time comes, Maddie will need some room, too. As I rummaged for new nails (while strategically covering up old holes with current art), Scott reminded me that I should keep her future placement in mind. Pfft – yeah, of course. Then again, this reminder came at the tail end of my noisy hammerfest, and I was much too busy to bother with those details. So when all was said and done, I told Scott that, naturally, I’d left room to the left of the light switch:

But, knowing us, we can’t possibly contain our wall to just one more piece. After Maddie’s completion, we’ll most likely stumble upon various other cute, uh, stuff as holiday fairs roll in and anniversary gifts are exchanged, and – well, there are just so many opportunities to keep that wall going (and going). And right now, I wonder, maybe our little Miss would be better suited to the right of the door.

But would it be too much? Maybe that’s a whole ‘nother beast, and maybe it’ll start to look – ew – cluttered.  Of course we could always keep going up – continuing the connection from our windy DIY to the ten-legged bear. What do you think? When should your gallery wall call it quits? Or maybe that’s the point.

  • I think you could at least try it on the right side. Then, if you think it’s too cluttered, you can patch the holes and keep it on the right side. I love gallery walls, though. And, if it makes you happy, why not?!? Maybe if you take a few paintings from the left side and switch to the right, just to keep it more balanced and look less cluttered with fewer art pieces overall. Just a thought. I love the additions!ReplyCancel

I love the unsymtrical ‘ness to it all. The blank space on the right is refreshing on its own, and with the art at the top of the door, it may be too much. But it is your house after all … do what you want :)ReplyCancel

Thank you, Amanda(s)! I suppose we could easily do a little test drive by moving a few over to the right and just touch up the holes if we don’t like it.

Maybe we should just keep accumulating little art and the decision will have to be made for us. Mwaha!ReplyCancel

Well since you asked… I’d leave the right side alone. To use it would be predictable and end up a hot mess (sorry~) Love it now with the bear at top and the others to the left.ReplyCancel

Jen, I was initially leaning towards your thoughts, too! But there is just so much great art out there…ReplyCancel

Keep going and let the fun art spill over to the right! Love the new furbaby portraits, too.ReplyCancel

This little wall of art is my absolute favorite thing about your place. We actually have a wall that is in our dining room that is perfect for this idea and plan to follow your lead on it. So I say go for it and spilleth overeth onto said right wall-eth. :)

A suggestion, perhaps? If you are tired of nail holes, have you tried Command strips? I use them for almost everything on my walls (renter, so no painting and minimal nail/tack holes). I get the little 1 lb strips and rarely use the plastic holders that come with them. They hide behind my art and are super simple to take down, no mess. I have one strip holding up half a skateboard (times 2) and they’ve been in that spot for a few weeks now. I really need to be a spokesperson for them. LOLReplyCancel

Tina, this is a great tip! We haven’t used them ourselves, but it’s definitely something to consider since our wall keeps growing!ReplyCancel
