Husband for Hire

Keeping in the tradition we started last year with our trip to Nashville, Kim and I will once again spend our anniversary traveling. We’re taking a trip. An awesome trip. We’ll fly into San Francisco, spend a couple days on Fisherman’s Wharf and the like (hey, we’ll be tourists after all), drive down the coast to Big Sur, spend a night in a Yurt, continue south to spend a couple days in LA with our fantastic friend, Kalli, then continue south to San Diego, where we’ll visit the world famous San Diego Zoo.

As you can imagine, this will be quite the voyage that will have us driving hundred of miles on the West Coast’s famous Highway 1. Needless to say, we’re excited about the trip (that’s the midwest in us craving some California sun), but not excited about the expenses. Therefore, we’ve been trying really hard to scrimp and save. Every dollar we save now is a dollar we can spend in California. So. We’re having another yard sale. We’re painting pets like mad (and loving it, by the way!). Oh, and we’re renting ourselves out for handy-work. That’s right. Just like A.C. Slater, I’m a regular Husband for Hire. (Anyone? No?). And while you won’t find me sporting the  camouflage sweatband, I have found that I’m handier than I thought.

That said, the BBOT and I have been hitting the road a bit lately. Recently, I’ve found myself replacing the track on a bi-fold door, and will soon be trimming and mounting an apartment’s worth of roller shades, as demonstrated here. Neither of these projects are terribly difficult or time consuming, but the one thing that I seem to have on my hands is a bit of free time (and a desire to make this trip as awesome as possible.)

So, do travel plans have you guys saving up and taking on more projects than you can handle, or do you rely on the 9 to 5 and simply budget accordingly any time you’ve got a big expense? Let us know, cause seriously, we could use the tips!

Hey! We are going to San Fran/Lake Tahoe in August! This was suppose to be our honeymoon, but money wasn’t there at the time. So, what we did is planned for when we wanted to take the trip. My husband has been lucky enough to work some OT and we are saving every penny we can to make this trip the best!! We have been sticking to a budget and going out less.ReplyCancel

We do our best to budget accordingly. Have fun on your trip! The weather in Southern California has been beautiful!ReplyCancel

Budgeting isn’t easy, is it? But we’re trying our hardest! We’ll be there in the Fall, which we hope is just as beautiful as the summer!ReplyCancel

When you are a cheapskate like me who is afraid to spend money on anything BUT travel, it’s quite easy to budget for trips. :)
Now, I have the money, I just have no time. :(ReplyCancel

The hubs and I are big on budgeting and saving, but I also pick up extra gigs when I can. I have a friend who is a self-made photographer/florist and I just assisted her in making floral arrangements for a wedding. I also babysit occasionally. It’s good to be creative and make money at the same time. Maybe you could teach a workshop on DIY home projects at a local hardware store or garden center? Good Luck on saving!
(Love the Saved by the Bell throwback btw)ReplyCancel

Scott, If you lived in Cincy, we would hire you to do a backsplash and a ceramic tile floor. I would rather work extra hours at my job and hire out projects. The numbers work a bit better. Good luck with your side projects.ReplyCancel

I usually have to slowly save up money, but our problem is that the BF has an unsteady job and when he gets money, he needs to save it. I am SO PUMPED though, because today he told me he has enough gigs lined up this summer that we can plan a trip somewhere for August or September! I haven’t left Southern California since last May, and we haven’t been on a trip just the two of us since March 2008. Crazy, right? I definitely need a vacation.ReplyCancel

  • Kalli6.18.10 - 7:28 PM

yeah! work it Scott, I know you can handle any crazy project that is thrown at you.

It will definitely be nicer for you to visit in the fall than the summer – too many tourists come in the summer for the beaches and the temp. will be nice. And now that you’ve seen a little bit of the obvious stuff in LA we can just go to cozy local spots. Yay!ReplyCancel

    Kim,
can you paint a picture of Chilly holding his Pens sign?ReplyCancel

  • Kim6.18.10 - 8:42 PM

Dave – wish we could be closer so you could hire your son for those projects! We’d like to do a backsplash of our own, so it would be good practice.

Amie – Can you believe that the first time Scott and I went on a trip (just the two of us) was our honeymoon? At that point, we’d been together for 6 years! It just seemed to make it more exciting though.

Kalli – LOVE YOU, miss you. Can’t wait to go to all the cozy spots you have in the ‘hood.

Jennifer – I’d love to paint Chilly! I’ll send you an email.ReplyCancel

Scott: Your mom told me of your blog at Amy Brockman’s shower a few months ago and I have been hooked ever since. You and Kim have an eye for stlye, a sense of adventure that is admirable, and a way with words that is a joy to read. I read the entries aloud to my husband who really just wants you to post an entry that says “Kim and I are sitting on our rumps, flipping channels and eating Big Mac’s” because every time I read your blog I add items to his honey-do list. Unfortunatley, the extent of our tool bench is our Grandpa jar! You should come to Cincinnati for a few days between now and your trip and between my mom an I you could knock out our entire honey-do list – we’d SO much rather pay you (and Kim for that matter!) than strangers. Keep having fun – we love seeing the changes.ReplyCancel

You will LOVE the YURT! We spent a night in one on the Oregon coast several years ago.
Scott, you remind me of us when we used to build a deck every summer to pay for the family vacation. The apple does not fall far from the tree!ReplyCancel

  • Scott6.19.10 - 8:43 AM

Mom and Dad- I remember helping build those decks… one of many ways Pops imparted me with his handy skillz! What did I get paid, like a penny a nail or something?

Courtney- Great to hear from you. Glad you guys are enjoying the blog. You and your mom should compose a list and shoot us an email with the types of projects you have in mind. Maybe we’ll shoot down to Cincy for a road trip. Seriously!ReplyCancel

  • Amanda6.21.10 - 10:10 AM

Good idea! Probably a little better than my recent idea to rent out a room. I would hire you, if you know, you didn’t live in Chicago.

You guys will love Big Sur and driving down Hwy 1. Sounds like a repeat of my recent trip there, minus the marathon. :-)ReplyCancel

Hi y’all!! I wish y’all lived closer, because I could sure use some help around here. Poor Matthew is asked to do some project almost everyday. Uncle Don and I took a similar trip to California when I was pregnant with Char…wow that was quite awhile ago…but very memorable as I’m sure y’alls trip will be. I love y’all…ReplyCancel

Enjoy your time out here in Cali – the drive from SF to San Deigo will be fun, if you two have time stop in Santa Barbara along the way its so pretty trust me!!ReplyCancel
