Green!

A big, huge resounding thank you! for all of your input on the nook room’s paint color. You brought up a lot of good points, and Scott and I dug through each of your comments and weighed all of your pros and cons for both options. (A little get together at our house on Friday night also helped to firm up our decision!) It seems that throughout everything we’ve tackled in this house – tearing down walls (and ceilings!), hunting for doors and pulling up floors – we find ourselves getting tripped up over these smaller decisions. (Oh, wait, that’s just me.)

By Friday evening, we had made up our mind, and the winner? A! Blue Fir. Hands down.

We spent a few evenings leading up to the weekend spackling, sanding and getting the room ready (and gah – these old walls need just as much, if not more, prep work than the task of painting itself!), and finally (!), we were able to pick up our gallon.

I don’t typically tape anything off when I paint a room (as I prefer free-handing the trim work), but because this was a darker color than we normally paint, I took the extra 15 minutes to line the ceiling with blue tape. It was worth it – that line is crisp and clean, and the white ceiling (Scott painted it the weekend before when my parents were in town) looks so good.

I didn’t bother getting a perfect line around the baseboards, since all of those will be ripped up and replaced soon; we even went trim shopping on a whim Sunday night, and if you thought we were indecisive about paint… well, trim takes it to another level! (Another post, another day.)

If there was ever a chameleon of colors, this one would top the list. In our eyes, it’s such a beautiful shade of green – and blue and gray – but depending on the intensity of the warm sunlight, it could lean very, very green. Or blue. Or just a really rich gray (well, a green gray, you know?). All those funny angles play so well with this color; it’s dark, it’s light, it’s every shade in between. We put down the brush and roller by Saturday afternoon, and we spent a good chunk of our Sunday leaning in the doorway, coffee mug in hand, sighing. The happy kind.

We purchased the bookcase eons ago – over the summer, maybe? It’s original intent was for our kitchen, but we kept it in its flat-packed box for so long that we figured it couldn’t have been that important. It’s the Ikea Vittsjo unit, and after assembling it, we liked the way it fit into our nook, and we think it’ll be the perfect spot to house our record collection. The glass shelving isn’t the sturdiest, however, so we’ll be retrofitting wood shelves in its place – eventually.

As much as we (really, really) want to move our things in (the records, a fluffy rug and the turntable), we need access to the wall left of the shelves for mounting our television and speakers in the living room – a project we hope to complete in the next couple of weeks (because right now, a handful of our media needs are on order or en route). So, of course it seems silly that even if our shelf was ready to go (and more importantly, ready to bare the weight of hundreds of pounds of vinyl), we wouldn’t want to load it up only to take it all back down.

In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for a small piece of furniture to hold the turntable, a deep and cozy chair for naps and a big stack of books to escape in (have you read anything good lately?). This teeny room has been so much fun already, but we are itching to dig through our records again.

Soon!

It looks great! I read somewhere recently (can’t remember where so I can’t attribute it) that when you absolutely can’t make up your mind between choices, it means that either will work just fine. This color looks beautiful, and the runner up would have looked beautiful, too. Same with the trim choices, I’m sure!ReplyCancel

That is not a color I am typically drawn to but it looks GREAT in that little nook. I think it is dark enough that it makes all the angles feel cozy but it’s not so dark that it’s oppressive. The shelves look nice against it too.ReplyCancel

It turned out great! And that shelf fits there so perfectly too :)ReplyCancel

It looks just as good as I imagined it! I love little nooks — can’t wait to see this one all dressed up.

Side note, what kind of turntable do you have? I had one years ago and am looking for something good but not overly pricey to play my collection on. Any recommendations?ReplyCancel

What a gorgeous colour! It was my top pick ;)ReplyCancel

      Thanks, guys!

      Loryn, you’re probably right :)

Hannah, the turntable is Scott’s domain – I’ve asked him to answer for you! (I just enjoy listening to it…)ReplyCancel

  • Scott1.28.14 - 9:11 AM

Hannah- Our turntable is a Stanton STR8-30. It’s a basic direct-drive turntable that’s been a great workhorse without breaking the bank. Here’s an Amazon link with more info:

My advice would be to stay away from a turntable with a belt, since they can stretch and need replacing over time. Good luck with your hunt and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!ReplyCancel

  • Gah! It looks so good!ReplyCancel

  • I had a feeling that was the color you’d pick and it’s absolutely gorgeous in there!ReplyCancel

It looks fantastic! And that shelf fits in there so perfectly. It’s like it was meant to be. Did you consider painting the ceiling blue fir or maybe another shade lighter? I would since it’s such a small space and has such a bright window.ReplyCancel

  • Kim1.28.14 - 10:48 AM

Bella, Scott actually suggested painting the ceiling Blue Fir as well, so we kept it in the back of our minds while we finished up the paint job. When we were done, we liked that little peek of white, which we think will also look good against the light fixture we’ve picked for the room (coming soon!).ReplyCancel

In love with the color! Love the dark moodiness peeking out the doorway, of course the window helps balance out the deep color. What I wouldn’t give for a nook dedicated entirely to books and vinyl!ReplyCancel

    It’s really pretty!

We live in the Chicago suburbs and I’ve been hesitant to paint because of how cold it has been. How did you deal with fumes/ventilation?ReplyCancel

  • Rachel1.28.14 - 2:43 PM

Love the color and it looks so great in your nook. What a cool space it will be with your tunes, a comfy place to rest and good reading materials – can’t wait to see the final product :-)ReplyCancel

  • Kim1.28.14 - 2:45 PM

Katherine, normally the fumes don’t really bother us (and most paints are low-VOC nowadays anyway), but you’re right. In this case, I actually ended up wearing a little mask since the room was so small, which to be honest, I don’t normally do.ReplyCancel

That is the perfect color for your nook. Love how dramatic it is, but still inviting. It’ll make the perfect hang out and read/listen to music atmosphere.ReplyCancel

I can’t wait to see what you to the IKEA vittjso. We are contemplating getting one and I have been searching the inter webs for vittjso inspiration!ReplyCancel

  • Kim2.6.14 - 9:10 AM

It looks phenomenal! :) I think you’re right to keep the ceiling white, too.

Thanks for the intel on the Vittsjo. I love it and I’ve been eyeing it as my main shelving unit/TV stand for my living room. It would need to hold a lot (!) of stuff and lord knows I’m never going to retrofit the shelves with wood (1) I’d be lucky if I even was able to assemble the original! And (2) I like the glass shelves as a way to add openness/airiness to the room. I’ll keep looking.ReplyCancel
