Frog Tape Challenge Reveal: Our Guest Room Oasis!

This post is a collaboration with FrogTape®  as a part of the 2018 Paintover Challenge. You can now vote for your favorite makeover, and FrogTape will donate $10,000 to the organization of the winner’s choice! Details at the end of this post.

Our Tree House guest room has come a long, long way in a short, short time! If you’re just joining in, we were asked by our friends at FrogTape® to take part in their 2018 Paintover Challenge, in which 6 bloggers have a budget of $1,000 + a few rolls of FrogTape® to makeover a room of their choosing. To mix things up, each blogger was assigned a different theme created by the challenge host, Taniya Nayak, and we were given Oasis. Oasis is described as both sophisticated and exuberant by blending lush greens and metallics; think: a soft, neutral backdrop with a punch of the unexpected.

Our design plans showcased mostly white textiles with a big splash of deep, dark green. In our last update, we used paint to elevate the entire feel of the room, and today, we’re excited to share the reveal with you! As a reminder, here’s what the guest room looked like a few days after closing on Tree House:

Earlier this year, we added beadboard to the walls (to mimic the beadboard ceilings!), and we decided on a handful of new pieces for the room – a handsome bed, this clothing rack and a new, smaller ceiling fan. Those changes brought us to our starting point, here:

The installation of beadboard added so much structure and interest to this tiny room, but that addition didn’t really shine until we painted the walls above a black-green. To keep things from feeling too heavy, we scaled back on the rest of the color palette, opting for accessories and bedding in bright white, cream and pale blue. Our Tree House guest room looks very different today! Psst: Every last room source, including paint colors, are at the bottom of the post.

When we decided on such a bold paint color, we knew that our highest chance at success for the sharpest paint lines would be with the help of FrogTape®. We used FrogTape® Multi-Surface (the roll of bright green tape we’ve all come to know and love!) to keep our beadboard walls and ceilings protected. There’s always that moment when we’re holding our breath before peeling back the tape, but we shouldn’t have been worried. Our lines were clean, sharp and precise, something that even the most steady hand wouldn’t have been able to achieve.

For years, we’ve been searching for a reason to use these Audubon bird prints (they’re free to download and use!), and we always thought Tree House would be a great candidate. When we were assigned Oasis, we thought, now’s the time! Scott is a huge bird nut (like, he needs a bumper sticker that says ‘will stop for bird sightings’), and we both loved that these prints would add a nice touch of nature. It was incredibly hard to narrow down our favorites, but our only rule was to choose native Michigan birds (although we did throw in one wild card). The brass frames pull out a little more yellow in the green, warming up the room.

sconces | frames + prints | striped sheets | green velvet pillow

We knew we needed end tables, but because this room is just barely 8′ wide, they’d have to be small. When we found these, we both agreed they’d be perfect for the space! To stay within our budget, we chose one with a shelf and one without. Both tables have a small drawer – the perfect spot to safely stash small jewelry, chapstick or other knick knacks during an overnight – and we added a small antique ceramic knob to each (salvaged from an old cabinet during our mudroom demolition). We also rewired the sconces with cloth cord, and I framed a vintage photo we found at a local salvage shop. The image reminded us of a scene we might see while exploring the dunes in town!

floating bedside tables | sconces | white frame | black + white cloth cord

The opposite side of the room is quiet and fuss-free, and we love how understated the black casement windows look with those shiny brass latches. You’ll also notice we did opt to leave that exposed elbow of ductwork unpainted. Because it’s connected to both the green wall and the white ceiling, it didn’t make sense to paint it one color or the other, and I’m learning to live with it – ha!

You might remember that we removed the closet from this room because it was stealing space from the bathroom on the other side of the wall. Because of this, we added a small clothing rack for guests to hang items as they wish, and as a simple design element, we beefed up the shelves on the bottom with plywood. We like how the plywood makes the rack feel visually lighter in the room, but better yet, it provides additional strength, too.

We are so happy with how this room turned out! It really does feel like a peaceful, yet fun, oasis for our Tree House, for our guests and for us (because we’re totally going to sleep in this little cocoon ourselves from time to time!).

When budgeting for any room, we do our best to stay low where we can, but we absolutely prefer to invest in quality whenever possible. This experience was an especially fun challenge knowing that one of the parameters was staying within the $1000 budget we were provided. At the same time, we were determined not to settle for something we didn’t love, and I’ll admit that it was a fine dance between deciding where we could splurge (the end tables!) versus where we’d save (the rug!). To stay within our allowable limit, we hunted down promo codes and took advantage of any sales, and we also shopped from lesser used or forgotten items around our home (i.e., pillow inserts, extra throws, trim paint). Here’s how we used up every last cent + an additional pesky $9:

The $1000 Budget Breakdown

Paint: $60
8 x 10 Jute rug: $150
2 – Floating end tables: $250
Pair of sconces: $100
Cloth wire for sconces: $30

Striped sheets: $41

Thank you for following along on our fast paced, Oasis-themed guest room! Now, friends, it’s time to vote. You can vote for your favorite makeover for a chance to win a $1,000 Visa Gift Card, starting today through June 1st. You can vote once a day, and every vote will count as an additional entry in the sweepstakes for the Visa Gift Card. But here’s the very best part -FrogTape® will donate $10,000 to the organization of the winner’s choice!

We’re hopeful to make our donation towards One Tail at a Time, a Chicago based all-breed pet rescue that is working towards a no-kill Chicago through adoption, community outreach, assistance and education. Not long ago, we designed their first brick and mortar Adoption Center, and their goal is to open a second location for more pets looking their forever homes! We’d love nothing more than to do our part towards making that happen.

We’d encourage you to view and support all of the makeovers for the FrogTape® Paintover Challenge. It has been so fun and inspiring to see how everyone has taken their theme and budget to create the most stunning spaces!

Thanks for sharing about the Audubon prints being free! Amazing! Can I ask what site or company you used to print them out with?ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.21.18 - 9:57 AM

We use an online company that makes fine art prints for the trade, but I would definitely check out Artifact Uprising as something comparable. They offer thick fine art prints on matte paper, which makes ALL the difference in the world.ReplyCancel

Love those bedside tables and have been eyeing them for a while. Do they have stops to prevent the drawer from sliding all the way out when you pull it open?ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.21.18 - 9:55 AM

Yes, but you still need to open it gently. It’s on a wood track, with a small wood stop. It’s not very deep, but they’re perfect for small things. We have a phone charger and a remote for the fan in ours, but it could still fit a kindle, a small book, some jewelry, etc. It’s the perfect small space solution, and they’re made really nicely!ReplyCancel

    Voted.
The aging of the brass really did it for me, and you are so good at hitting the sweet spot between classic and contemporary. It is such a wonderful guest space that emphasizes the original features.ReplyCancel

That the perfect guest room! I love the cozy fee, it reminds me of my family’s cabin from my youngin days. I think the open rack is genius for guest so they don’t forget anything behind.

Paint the vent dark! I’m in the process of a huge new school project and all the exposed ductwork is being painted dark gray, even if the pipes go into a white wall. It still looks hidden even at the transition.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.21.18 - 11:43 AM

Ahh, that stupid vent! We struggled because it’s partly on the dark wall, partly on the bright white ceiling. So if we painted it dark, you would see a big visual break on the ceiling. If we paint it white, it would look terrible against the green walls. Everyone involved was so torn on the decision, that we just let it be (for now). ;)ReplyCancel

  • Holy buckets! This turned out so amazing! I just devoured the whole thing. There are so many great ideas for a tiny space here, I especially love those floating shelves and I think I’ll have to get a close hanger for our guest room too. The Audubon prints are totally perfect over the bed. It all looks so lovely – very much your style while, but translated for your tree house. PS I just recently tried to de-laquer some brass switch plates with boiling water with no luck, I’ll be trying the acetone trick next.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.22.18 - 10:25 PM

      Thank you, Alison!

Acetone is where it’s at! It’s crazy strong, which is why it was our last resort. Good luck, friend.ReplyCancel

Seriously LOVE this room. Everything is perfect. Love the colors, the textures of the bedding, the brass accents… Are you going to airbnb this eventually? Because I want to live there, if only for a little while haha

Maybe for the silver vent, you could use a matte black rustoleum to play off the other black accents or the wall color and cap the top slanted part of it in white as a trompe l’oeil to blend it into the ceiling? Everything else in the room fits so perfectly together, it almost seems intentional that way anyway. I can see how you could live with it for any length of time you need.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.22.18 - 10:24 PM

We are so torn on that vent! Blah! It seems like no matter what we do, it’s still going to stick out like a sore thumb. We’ll see how badly it bothers us in the next couple of months…ReplyCancel

Wondering what you think about the quality of H&M linens, particularly the linen ones you purchased for the guest room.ReplyCancel

We’ve purchased H&M bedding a few times, and we’ve always been super happy with the quality! It’s a hidden gem for everyday home staples.ReplyCancel

  • I love the Audubon prints. I have the heron print above my nightstand and a wild turkey one above my husband’s. Like you, we chose two native birds. In fact we see them every so often on our farm, and it’s always a special omen when we do.ReplyCancel

  • Ashley - The Gold HIve5.23.18 - 11:46 AM

I loooove this room. Like, are you sure this isn’t a room in my house? The green, the Audubon prints, the Sydney Hale room spray, the blankets, all of it. Swoon.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.23.18 - 11:56 AM

The Sydney Hale room spray made me LOL. Which is your favorite scent?! Eucalyptus and Sage all the way, but we tried out Coastal Juniper in here, because it felt right.ReplyCancel

      • Ashley - The Gold Hive5.24.18 - 10:36 AM

I love every one that I’ve tried and I just placed another order yesterday for more! We had Grapefruit Hibiscus in the bathroom for awhile until I used it up. At some point, I heard this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6V2oCX3Hn4 while looking at the candle, and now I can’t say “Grapefruit Hibiscus” without singing the melody of that song’s chorus.

Have a ruined that scent for you, too!? SORRY!ReplyCancel

        • Kim5.24.18 - 2:36 PM

I haven’t tried Grapefruit Hibiscus, but you know it’s on my list now!ReplyCancel

Lovely! I’m curious how to rug feels underfoot? Sometimes that type is really coarse? Thanks!ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.24.18 - 9:32 AM

It’s so nice! We read SO many reviews to make sure we were choosing something soft. The first night that Scott’s parents slept in the guest room, his dad mentioned how good the rug felt! Scott said it reminded him of walking on those athletic sandals we all used to wear in the 90s. :)ReplyCancel

  • Melinda5.24.18 - 3:03 PM

Question about the bed (because it’s awesome): are the legs easily removable? As-is it’s just a squeak too tall to fit under the sloped ceilings in our eave bedroom but I’m thinking it might go without the legs…

And another vote for matte black paint on the ductwork if you decide to do anything. I personally love a little exposed ductwork or pipes here and there!ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.24.18 - 3:10 PM

I just asked Scott, and he doesn’t think so… Then again, it was delivered and put together by the Crate delivery team. I would definitely call their customer service and check with them!ReplyCancel

  • Kari5.29.18 - 12:22 PM

Love this room! It looks so cozy!
Could you paint the exposed duct a brassy or gold color? Maybe if it tied into the other brass touches in the room it wouldn’t bug you?ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.30.18 - 10:04 AM

It’s gonna bug us no matter what, haha! I think we just don’t want to draw attention to it. Loving all these suggestions!ReplyCancel

  • Mary Hiber3.1.19 - 10:45 PM

I’m in the process of remodeling my master bath and bedroom and wanted to know the height of the beadboard around your bedroom? I’m thinking 4 feet including the baseboard. I personally would like it to be reasonably higher than the headboard on my bed.

Thank you in advance and look forward to your response.
    Sincerely,
    Mary HiberReplyCancel

    • Kim3.2.19 - 8:58 AM

I think ours was around 4′ as well! It’s honestly going to be personal preference for you. We didn’t want to cut down the beadboard, so it was the height of the beadboard plus the trim we added to the top. Good luck!ReplyCancel
