Flying South for the Winter

On our recent trip to Nashville, we happened into Retropolitan, a  great little modern home store in Hillsboro Village. While we fell in love with tons of sleek furniture options, what really caught our eye were these funky little ceramic swallows. Available in two sizes and facing either right or left, the display options are nearly endless. We decided on two small birds and one large, creating the illusion of perspective. Tricky, we know.

This wall set-up is also geographically correct, seeing that the birds are flying South and Old Man Winter has finally wrapped its’ icy fingers around our fair, albeit brutally cold, city. We’ve had wind-chills as low as 20 below zero this past week. Not to worry though, these little guys aren’t going anywhere. Here’s the big picture, showing a little more of the room for context:

The birds simply hang from a little hole in the upper part of the wing, which results in a straight-as-an-arrow flight technique, and not quite what we had in mind. Because we were pretty picky about the exact angles, we utilized little half pieces of 3M’s Mounting and Replacement Strips just below each hole to help keep the flight paths headed in the right direction. Now we’re talkin’.

After a hammering in a couple quick nails from the Grandpa Jar and stickin’ that tape (simple pressure was all it took), we were done. The birds are a nice, sweet addition to an otherwise blank space above our TV… and a subtle reminder that winter won’t last forever. Probably.

Be sure to tune in on Wednesday, when we’ll be hosting a pretty neat giveaway. Sweet.

i love the birds, but having the speakers so close to the wall and especially one at inside corner is making the acoustician inside me twitch. :pReplyCancel

Thanks, Tim! Where would your inner acoustician suggest that the speakers be placed? The system sounds great to me, but I’m open to suggestions!ReplyCancel

if it sounds good to ya, well your done. but if ya wanna give it some more thought, you have to realize that one speaker your going to be hearing speaker + reflections from the back wall, the other is speaker + reflections from both walls; those two 90deg reflections are actually going to cancel out some tones and you’ll get a vastly different tonal output from each, along with reverberations and smearing of the soundstage. pull them away from the walls as far as you can and maybe consider some damping material on the back wall for sure, side wall if you can. i like to hang oriental rugs on the wall.ReplyCancel
