Filling the Gap + an Art Filled Giveaway!

Even though we’ve been knee deep in exterior upgrades, our living room has been coming along, too! All of the trim is complete in this room (paint and everything!), interior door knobs are being installed, our ceiling fan has been getting a lot of use (worth every second of search agony; we promise!), and most recently – we’ve added art!

gallery-ricardo-solis-001

The blank wall between our nook and first floor guest room has been staring us down since the day it was painted, and although it’s a considerable blank gap, it’s never been a good candidate for furniture since it’s along the invisible ‘walk way’ that connects the living room to the kitchen. And because we’ve been brainstorming some very large art above our couch (plans are in the works for that!) and we already have a large framed print in the nook, we thought this space could use a minimalistic gallery wall. Nothing too cluttered, nothing too low. (Jack loves using the walk way as his race track every now and then!)

gallery-ricardo-solis-004

Some of you may notice a large majority of the art, as we’ve had most of it for years, and we already owned all the frames (a couple were given a facelift with a coat of white paint to keep things cohesive). We did need to order a few new mats (we’re still using the Frames by Mail Matte Designer for that!), but aside from that, we were able to pull everything together fairly quickly! Here’s what we’ve got:

gallery-ricardo-solis-006

ONE DIY screen print made at a local arts festival // TWO kitty print by Amy Amok from School of the Art Institute student sale // THREE DC #3 (taken during our trip a few years ago) // FOUR bench print from School of the Art Institute student sale* // FIVE Paris #4 (another one taken during a trip!) // SIX Artificial Growing, Ricardo Solis // SEVEN bear + bunny, Nate Duval

And the print that started it all? SIX! The hippo!

We were recently introduced to Ricardo Solis by someone who works closely with the artist (Hi, Aaron!), and being a lover of all things art, I found myself diving into his work and falling in love. Ricardo’s work is so playful and whimsical, yet it’s done with such skill and precision that – well, we think so! – it works just the same for adults as it would children. Really, take a look!

gallery-wall-ricardo-solis

Clockwise from top left: Dressing the Zebra, Dripping Flamingo, Fragile Balance, Creating the Corocoro, Creation of the Giraffe, Leopard. Find all his art prints right here!

His imagination is so spirited, and we love that in Solis’ world, animals are created by the help of teensy, tiny workers. (Didn’t we all think that way at some point?) They carefully apply black ribbon to zebras, chisel elephants from stone and fill a hippo as you would a balloon. He toys with the ‘undeniable existence of a Creator,’ and while his art is beautiful in its own right, the subtle message behind each piece is heartwarming – truly!

Bonus! You can currently get free shipping on all Ricardo Solis orders of $50+ when you use the code ‘freeship50’.

And for all those reasons (and many more), we’re thrilled that we get to spread some of that love. Together with the Ricardo Solis team, we’ll be giving away a $100 shopping credit to one lucky reader! Using the Rafflecopter widget below, enter as many ways as you’d like. Giveaway runs through Friday, July 25th at 5pm CST, and the winner will be announced within this post. The best part? This giveaway is available to anyone in the world! Good luck and happy entering!

*Sadly, this student print is unmarked, and it was purchased at least 4 years ago. (Bummer!) On another note, we highly recommend making it to one of these sales at the School of the Art Institute; they’re held once every spring and winter!

I was introduced to Solis through another blog a few weeks ago and fell head-over-heels in love. His art is charming and fanciful and so wonderfully imaginative. • Bonnie8.3.14 - 9:37 PM

Hi Kim, What size is the Artificial Growing print that you have? I’m debating between the 8×8 and 10×10…or a rectangular-I just can’t decide!

    Thanks!ReplyCancel

    • Kim8.4.14 - 9:25 AM

Hi Bonnie! I landed on a 16×16, but keep in mind that it’s the paper size… so the image itself is actually more about 14×14. With that said, I’d suggest going a little bigger than what you think you’d like the actual image size to be, so, 10×10? You’ll love it no matter what!ReplyCancel
