3 BIG Dream Room Dream Team Makeovers!

chunky throw | linen bedding | velvet pillowstripe pillow | lamps (similar) | shades

This post is in partnership with Bali Blinds + Olympic Paint as a part of the Dream Room Dream Team makeover series. See the kick off here and the progress here!

For several months, we’ve been working with three amazing families behind the scenes to makeover one deserving room in their home. Here and there, we’ve slipped a few sneak peeks through the cracks on social, and we’ve even shared the process on the Bali Blinds Blog (see parts one and two). But today, we couldn’t be more excited to share the full – very full! – before and afters with all of you right here! Grab your coffee and settle in, because try as I might, I could barely narrow down my favorite photos to share the whole process.

Let’s back up for a moment. Over the summer, we’ve been a helping hand for three families as we’ve discussed color and light and how these basic foundational elements set the scene for how a room feels. You know when you walk into a room, and it just feels right? You might think it’s the rug or the art or the cozy couch, but I encourage you to take a few steps back. When the proper lighting plays nicely with harmonious colors, the rest of the room will have an easier time falling into place – really. This was the thought behind the Olympic Paint® and Bali Blinds® Dream Team when they came together to create a one stop shop at your local Lowe’s Home Improvement! The idea is to start by choosing your color palette, deciding on the best window treatments for your home’s natural light and needs, and finally, getting to work.

I have to hand it to each of the families, because they were the muscles behind their rooms! While we guided them through color selections and window treatments, they rolled up their sleeves, painted their respective rooms and installed their window treatments of choice. We cheered them on and brought in a few finishing touches to pull the rooms together, but more than anything, these makeovers are a true testament to the power that color + light bring to a space.

Let’s meet the families!

Makeover 1 | Pete + Rachael’s Front Room

Pete and Rachael moved into their home last year, but they’d been stumped on their front room. They recently purchased a gorgeous velvet tufted sofa to accompany Pete’s favorite leather chair, and shortly after moving in, they painted over the formerly dark brown walls with a soft yellow. The room has amazing bones – look at those windows! – but they admitted that they never loved the beige-y yellow walls they chose on a whim, and all those pretty (yet naked) windows had them avoiding this space in the evenings for privacy reasons.

When I asked them about the yellow they chose for their walls, they both agreed that their ultimate goal was for this room to feel warm and inviting. However, the yellow was too yellow, and it lacked the depth they were looking for. Instead, I suggested a deeper gray with yellow undertones, which would give them the warmth they craved without being, well, yellow. Pete took on the massive task of painting every last bit of trim as well, including the bay window surrounds and seat, fireplace and baseboards!

We landed on Olympic’s Intuitive in a flat finish, which would help conceal their textured walls. The trim was painted Delicate White in a scrubbable, wipeable satin finish. This was my/their first time using the Olympic ONE line of paints, and Pete said it was every bit as good as pricier brands he’d used in other areas in the home. In fact, he was ready to make the switch as they continue making over more rooms!

And here’s the space after the paint shake up and their barely-noticeable Bali Sheer Shades:

The bay window was begging for a pile of pillows, and do you see that small valance along the top of the windows? Those are the sheer shades when they’re hidden away, allowing their pretty windows to shine throughout the day. (More on those in a minute!)

The fireplace looks so clean with its fresh white paint, and the shelves in the surrounding built-ins stand out against the Intuitive walls. I pared down the items on the shelves so that they wouldn’t compete with their vibrant rug and sofa, tucking away a few new surprises for them, too (that hippo!). All room sources are listed at the bottom of each makeover.

When it came to their window treatments, Pete and Rachael agreed that they wanted their windows to be the star of the show, of course! We discussed the idea of sleek roller shades (similar to ours), but after taking a look through the sample books at their local Lowe’s, they quickly fell in love with Bali’s Sheer Shades in the Westford Vanilla Creme fabric. With so many windows in the room, they also opted for plug-in motorized lifts controlled by a small remote hidden at the base of each window:

The Sheer Shades allow for privacy while still providing filtered light (similar to rollers!), but in this case, horizontal vanes are woven between sheer fabric. The vanes can remain open as seen below, or they have the ability to close up for further privacy if needed. We all agreed that they’re a soft – even romantic! – touch to a room that mixes bold furniture with soft textures. Pete, Rachael and their little Amelia love the new look, and we’re so happy we could do this for them!

Makeover 2 | Dave + Carmen’s Master Bedroom

Dave and Carmen’s master bedroom already had all the essentials – a soft bed, wooden blinds, a dresser and end table. However, Dave explained that he felt the room was feeling too heavy, and I had to agree! Between the dark wood furniture, espresso hardwood floors and dark gray walls, the entire space felt weighed down. It wouldn’t need much, but I knew a mini makeover would work wonders in here! This was our starting point:

Their bedroom receives a good deal of light throughout the day, so to take advantage of that, I asked them if they were open to bright white walls. Although they admitted they were initially leaning towards a blue or green, they were 100% open to the idea, and we ran with it! But to counteract that, and because this is a bedroom, I suggested that we bring in a bit of pattern with Bali’s Tailored Roman Shades with a blackout liner. We gathered countless samples, and we tossed around the idea of bright reds, blues or florals:

We ended up with a room that’s so bright and clean; it’s truly a calming oasis at the end of a long day (and isn’t that always the goal?). All the furniture remained the same, but I did change up the bedding and add a few accessories to create the most welcoming room possible. The walls were painted Olympic’s Delicate White in an eggshell finish, and we chose Tailored Looped Romans with a cordless lift in the Shiraz Nightingale color way. The contrasting pattern on the shades adds a punch to the room, yet it doesn’t feel too over the top. It’s just right!

To break up the dark-furniture-on-dark-floors look, I suggested this soft jute rug (with great reviews!) as a base for the room. A thick striped white coverlet paired with a navy duvet is a nice complement to the oversized black mirror we hung above the bed – all elements that play so well with the contrast in the blinds:

The looped Romans are so thick and lovely; I literally gasped when I saw them for the first time! The blackout liner is dark, which is so important for the weekends and lazy days. Dave and Carmen chose a non-motorized cordless lift, which can be easily raised and lowered with a quick tug up or down. Once I had finished styling the space, they were thrilled with the completed look, and this might be my favorite example of how a fresh coat of paint and window treatments can so, so easily transform a room.

Makeover 3 | Joe + Meg’s Master Bedroom

Joe and Meg only moved into their new-to-them home this past August, but seeing their progress, you would never know it! Not only have they already wallpapered several rooms, most of the spaces are already coming together with furniture, art and paint. But before all of that, the very first room this busy couple was looking to tackle was their master bedroom. All the walls in the home were painted a contractor’s beige, and aside from plopping down their existing furniture, not much else was done to this room (which is to be expected less than a week after move-in!):

This team knows what they’re doing; not only are they the power couple behind MegMade, they had already ordered several new pieces from the room, many of them coming from their own shop. When Meg told me she was on the fence between a soft white or something really bold, I had to bite my lip from screaming, bold! Luckily, she was already leaning that way, and we quickly chose the deepest, darkest emerald to jump start this bedroom.

The walls were painted Olympic’s Midnight Clover in an eggshell finish, and to play with the laid-back vibe of the room, we paired that with Bali’s Natural Shades in Faroe Twine with a cordless lift. Meg and Joe had a strong vision for their room from the start, and they styled this room to perfection – with a teeny, tiny Jack-Jack for good measure (hi, buddy!).

What could have been an awkward cut out in the room was turned into a dog bed nook for Jack, and I love that they opted to leave that opening bright white. The dark green paint is downright stunning along the angles in the room, and it feels like a yummy, comfortable cocoon. Even as I type that, my shoulders hunch up, as if begging to be wrapped in a big throw blanket, but you guys, this room is downright dreamy.

Just like Dave and Carmen’s blinds, their Natural Shades were lined with a thick blackout fabric, and they can be easily raised and lowered with a gentle push or pull. (Truth be told, seeing their shades has us considering something similar for our nursery!) The texture in the shades lends so much to the room, and Meg has already let me know that she’s looking to fill the rest of their home with the same! This bedroom makes us all smile from ear to ear, and we love that they took the plunge and went so bold.

Joe + Meg’s Room Sources:

Wall color: Olympic ONE paint in Midnight Clover (eggshell) | Blinds: Bali Natural Shades in Faroe Twine with cordless lift | headboard, bedside tables, credenza, vintage pommel horse and rug from MegMade | narrow leg bed frame |white linen bedding | flax shams | chunky throw | lamps (similar) | brass frames | ostrich flora print | juju hat | vintage leopard planter | dinosaur planter (similar) | velvet pillow | stripe pillow

And that’s a big, massive wrap on these three rooms for three wonderful families! We’re over the moon with all the very different results, each suited to the personalities of some of our dearest friends. This November, the Dream Room Dream Team will be giving away a room makeover to one lucky person, so stay tuned to the Bali Blog for more details on that soon.

I just put that same rug from the first reno in my living room! I’ve gotten some compliments from friends, but how ironic that you chose the same EXACT rug. Love it! I’ve been looking for deep blue & yellow accents (but also to brighten up the room since we have a large dark brown couch) and that rug has really helped! My next upgrade to my living rm will be to remove some of the couch sections and add a wingback chair with the same blue – I wish I could rock that velvet couch, it’s badass!ReplyCancel

A wingback paired with that rug is always a great idea!ReplyCancel

  • […] I love how little kids create abstract art without even knowing it. I love creating a picture collage wall and incorporating one or multiple pieces by my kids. It is a way to keep it looking classy while also making them proud to have their artwork on the wall. I love Wells piece of art on the wall to the side of our dresser.
