All of the Measurements in Our Kitchen

These are all of the measurements in our new kitchen layout, from distance between lighting, around the table, and more.

Answering Your Kitchen Measurement Questions

Our kitchen reveal went live a couple of months ago, but Kim answers questions on the daily about the measurements. How far is the shelf above the countertop? How far apart are the ceiling pendants? What’s the height of the range hood? The list goes on! We were inspired by Emily Henderson and Chris and Julia to lay out all of the measurements and answer all of your questions in one fell swoop. Feel free to pin, share and bookmark as you plan your own kitchen designs!

Chicago Kitchens

As a bit of background, Chicago homes are typically built on lot sizes that are only 25′ wide x 125′ deep. This means that as you explore the neighborhoods in the city, you’ll notice that the houses are very close together, and they are much deeper than they are wide. In older homes, the kitchen is likely found in the back of the house, and depending on when modern HVAC was installed, those components often find their home in the kitchen. Our home was, as you might remember, no exception. And it’s because of this that an older Chicago home its’ fair share of challenges.

After we changed the location of our furnace, we were left with a wider-than-usual galley style kitchen, where cabinets line both sides of the walls. We love a well laid out galley kitchen, so although we could have added an island, we opted for a small dining table instead (this round cutie), which has been such a fun choice for our family since the renovation wrapped. Because of this, you’ll notice that we push the limits of space, and it works really well for us!

Breaking Down the Measurements – Range Wall

The largest layout shift came with the elimination of the HVAC closet (on the left side below, where the refrigerator sits now). We carefully measured down to the 1/16th of an inch and absolutely nailed the cabinet placements and sizes for our needs. There are couple of unique elements on this side of the room:

  • The in-ceiling range hood freed up tons of space above the range. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
  • The countertops on this side of the room are around an inch deeper than standard. This allowed our cabinets to remain completely flush with the front surface of the 36″ range. It’s a small detail that makes a huge impact.
  • The quartz shelf above the range allows us to keep frequently used items like salt, pepper and olive oil off of the countertop, but within easy reach. It’s a game changer!

Breaking Down the Measurements – Sink Wall

Over on the sink wall, we again opted for an open shelf instead of upper cabinets. The 24″ shelf height keeps things up and out of the way, but within easy reach. The high placement of the sconce trio allows breathing room and space for colorful art. We think there’s no such thing

We’ve also shared a 6 month review of our appliances, 5 hidden features we added to the kitchen, and an entire cost breakdown (like, everything). Great information! Could you clarify the 41.75″ on the refrigerator door vs. the 30.5″ on the freezer drawer?ReplyCancel

    • Scott3.29.23 - 10:36 AM

Whoops! Good catch! The 41.75″ is the overall width of the entire fridge/freezer cabinet. The 30.5″ is the height of the freezer door, not the width. We updated the photo for clarity.ReplyCancel

It looks like the width of the center of your kitchen is 104″ between the cabinets…do you think you’d still like the circular table if the kitchen were about a foot narrower? We’re working with a 92″ width and debating either a small table or narrow island…ReplyCancel

I think with a 92″ width, you’d definitely want to tape things out on the floor to get an idea of how it will feel. We’ve even gone so far as to purchase a small secondhand table to see how it will feel in the space. If you’re thinking of an island, you could even use boxes to get a feel of the space between things. Hope this helps!ReplyCancel

Do you mind sharing how thick your countertops are?
Everything is lovely, by the way!ReplyCancel

What a fun article. Cool to see the measurements. By the way, I love your cabinets. The color is to die for. I’m trying to get a fresh cabinet painting soon in my own place, and seeing your design was really helpful to me. Thanks for sharing!ReplyCancel

Could you tell me how wide your appliance garage is? Also, how do you enjoy the 12″ depth? Does it work for you?ReplyCancel

    • Scott8.7.23 - 10:22 AM

Our appliance garage is 30″ wide. The 12″ depth fits a big blender and a full size stand mixer, so it meets our needs perfectly!ReplyCancel
