About That End Table

Not long ago, we picked up a pair of peacocks and an end table – this much you already know. When Susan told me she had something that could work, she sent me a photo, I confirmed with Scott, and we agreed that yes, it does work. It’s as deep as our couch (everything else we came up against was too square), not too wide, and tall enough to fit over our subwoofer – which until now, had been doubling as the landing pad for our drinks. Here it is, pre-cleaning, smudgey legs and all:

We placed it in the corner between the couch and the wall and called it a day. We figured we’d see how we felt about it in a week or two; does it work? (Answer, yes, it’s a table, after all.) Does it fill that weird, awkward void we used to have? Yes again. Do we love it? Eh. I told Susan upfront that it’d likely get a makeover, but as for what, well, that’s still undecided.

It’s just a bit too tall, and while we love the depth, the wood laminate top is too… wood-y. (Wood-y looking, that is. Since, you know, it’s not real wood.) Between the new end table, our coffee table and lovely, velvety chair, we’re thinking a little paint to break up all the wood tones could be refreshing, and Scott’s itching to cut a few inches off the legs – which I’m still on the fence about.

You can see that it would be super simple to take apart, which means we could go in any direction for the top. We could paint it, re-size it, or even replace it completely! Perhaps we’re so undecided because this is the least offensive table; it could be very well left alone. But what’s the fun in that?

Doing a little Pinterest research, I found a similar table at Room & Board with different options, which was nice to play around with – gray tops, white tops, marble tops and granite; they were all there.

I’m leaning towards a clean white, but for something so small, we could also go bold, right? Or maybe a smoky gray? What do you think? What would you do – anything at all? We are so, so open to suggestions.

I would totally go bold! You have great neutral pieces in there so a light pop of color sounds perfect! Ohhh, how I hope you do that. :)ReplyCancel

Adrienne, perhaps the same teal as our console table?ReplyCancel

  • Trista1.23.13 - 9:55 AM

What would I do? Probably leave it like it is, but I’m a weeny. Should totally go bold!ReplyCancel

    Haha, thanks, Trista!ReplyCancel

I’d go bold! Why not paint it in teal like you said above? You can always change it if you don’t love it! :)ReplyCancel

I also vote to go bold – but I think you need a warm color to off-set all the cool ones you already have going in the room. Your orange elephant looks mighty nice sitting there – what about orange? (Though then you’d have to move Ellie – is that her name? :-)ReplyCancel

What a lovely table! I think the height is just about perfect – when you decide what color to paint it (teal like you said could be fun, I’m leaning towards a grayer teal for some reason) then it will peek out over the sofa arm. If you decide to make it a touch shorter maybe you could just alter the feet? They look sort of chunky.ReplyCancel

Cait, oh my gosh, you’re so right about those feet! Why didn’t we think of that! That’s why I love you guys. We’ll have to take a look and see if that’s an option. And yeah, now I am sort of leaning towards the grayer teal…ReplyCancel

We have a small Ikea table that I painted orange in our living room. I love that it’s small enough that the color doesn’t feel overwhelming, and we can repaint it whenever we want. I vote for bold! :)ReplyCancel

I’m on team white. Wait–is that a team yet?? ;)ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.23.13 - 6:32 PM

Julia, you’re the first on that team! Well, after me. That is, until I’ve been convinced to go bold…ReplyCancel

I’m on team teal! Although, white would tie in nicely with the picture ledge. :)ReplyCancel

  • Pauline1.24.13 - 9:25 AM

Maybe with masking tape for a graphic look? or with black and white squares to play chess or checkers ??ReplyCancel

  • Kim1.24.13 - 9:41 AM

Pauline, that’s a cool idea too! I think something like that could be neat in a kids room.ReplyCancel

  • Helen1.25.13 - 12:24 PM

Maybe teal with white geo pattern? Something like this http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2010/11/credenza-practical-meets-pretty/
    But what does Jack think?ReplyCancel

Thanks, Helen and Pauline! Helen, I pinned that image from CG a long, long time ago! Now I’m not so sure that style is for us. Hmm. Decisions, decisions!ReplyCancel
