A Pretty In Pink Closet

tiered pendant | cabinet latches | door hardware

Now that we’ve painted the inside of the closet the sweetest, softest blush, the nursery is officially ready for furniture and organization! Although the large pieces in the room will be mostly neutral, we always planned on injecting a touch of color in the closet, especially with the off-white walls in the rest of the space. But finding that perfect pink? It was a little trickier than we thought it’d be.

I started by painting test swatches onto poster board using two pretty colors we already had on hand and love from past projects. Below, Benjamin Moore’s Morristown Cream (on the left) was used on the IKEA VARDE in our shipping room, and Colorhouse’s Purple 01 (on the right) was used during last year’s coat closet refresh – something I want to touch on quickly, because we learned a big lesson there!

The first time we decided to paint the inside of a closet, we really went for it. Because the color would be safely tucked away behind a closed door most of the time, we chose a vibrant minty green, Clark+Kensington’s Bow Island, for our entryway coat closet. The problem is that anytime we turned on the closet light (especially in the evenings), our eyes were assaulted by the most headache-inducing neon green! No matter what kind of bulb we used, the mix of bright paint + artificial light created a fluorescent mess. The problem was that there wasn’t nearly enough gray to dilute the color, and when I finally rolled over the green with a pale pinky-lavender, it was a happy, happy day.

Needless to say, we didn’t want to make the same mistake again. Morristown Cream leans slightly lavender, and on the color swatch, it almost looks like it might be a tidge too dirty – maybe even brown? But once the color is painted on a larger surface, it’s a pretty grown-up shade of pink that just works. It won out over the Purple 01, if only because my heart was set on a more true pink, and Scott’s a man that loves pink as much as me (I’m a lucky lady).

The Morristown Cream that I painted on the poster board was tinted at Benjamin Moore, but I only had half a quart left – definitely not enough to paint the closet. In this case, we decided to have it color matched at Lowe’s to Valspar Reserve paint, if only because we had a store credit burning a hole in my wallet (and it’s much closer than our nearest BM shop). Lowe’s has all the Ben Moore colors in their system, but as soon as I brought it home and swiped a test swatch in the closet, I just knew it was too bubble gum. The color felt all wrong, and it was much too bright compared to my little cardboard sample. We considered using it anyway, but I was anxious that we’d repeat the infamous Green Closet pattern. Instead, I brought it back to Lowe’s the next day, and this time, they scanned my little poster board and got an exact match. Color me impressed – ha! So my big tip to you? If you can at least get your hands on a paint chip from any paint brand, chances are that scanning that color at the paint counter (rather than relying on their computer system) will be your best bet. We’re just learning all the lessons, huh?

On painting day, I first cut in using my favorite short handled paint brush, and afterwards while Scott rolled, I made myself busy with other projects. When I stepped back into the room to see the finished color, I surprised myself by crying. (I think Scott got misty, too!) It was the first touch in this little nursery that made it feel so real, and it washed over me in a wave, something I wasn’t expecting.

We decided to paint the ceiling as well, creating a soft cocoon and laying the foundation for what’s to come:

The walls of the studio are also pink, although much, much lighter (BEHR’s Pale Bud). The flow from the studio into the nursery and back into our master bedroom feels so special. After years of keeping this door closed, it makes us smile to swing it open.

We’ve since completed the closet organization, and the changing table is almost in! I’ve been hanging the cutest little outfits on teeny, tiny hangers (baby girl clothes are incredibly hard to resist), and we’re looking forward to sharing with you how it turned out!

Your experience with colour matching is interesting, we had the complete opposite happen to us where the scan off the chip was WAY off and the computer system was spot on (it was a Behr paint colour at a non-Behr home store.) In our case we were able to take the tin back and they were able to correct it. Phew!ReplyCancel

Oh, interesting! Yeah, the guy at the paint counter was so patient and didn’t make me feel like a crazy person. He corrected it using the sample I had painted, and I was on my merry way!ReplyCancel

I love that you painted the closet a special color, especially since you’ll be using your changing table in there. And what a great idea to paint the ceiling to match. It’s a nice little surprise in there!ReplyCancel

Motherhood and crying seem to go hand in hand! It’s the happy crying that is the best– it’s just overwhelming all the feelings :) The nursery looks so lovely, she’s going to be one very special little girl!ReplyCancel

I keep surprising myself with the times that I cry! I’ve always been a pretty sentimental person, but this has been quite the roller coaster, ha.ReplyCancel

I have had terrible luck with the home improvement stores mixing Benjamin Moore colors for me! They were ALWAYS off. It’s great to know that color matching the card worked instead–maybe I’ll give that a go next time!ReplyCancel

That shade of pink is amazing!! I’m pretty sure you found the perfect option. I love how muted and desaturated it is. Something your girl can grow into! PS. also loving everything about that closet situation.ReplyCancel

When you said you painted the ceiling as well I got so excited — I thought you meant the ceiling of the whole room! Would you ever consider that? I think it would be so dreamy in this space. Subtle, barely-there, just a special something extra.ReplyCancel

That would be really sweet as well, especially since the ceiling is so high, it wouldn’t feel overwhelming. Definitely something to consider… Hmmm…ReplyCancel

Exactly my thought. It would just bounce light around in a nice warm way.ReplyCancel

You can never, ever (ever!) trust a paint color until you’ve done two coats and allowed it to dry! We’ve been panicked in the past, too, haha!ReplyCancel
