A Cat Grass Party

On Sunday, the hubs and I finally put down the tools, the paint, the spray cans, brushes and dropcloths. We took a time out, and we spent the morning perusing the rows of vendors at our neighborhood farmer’s market. After days of torrential downpours (and winds up to 80 mph – holy moly!), it was finally a dry and sunny day, and we went armed with a few bucks.

Almost immediately, we chatted with a vendor who sold yummy herbs, trays of fresh greens, and, hence the post title, cat grass. Never one to pass up on an opportunity to spoil the kitties, we handed over $2 and came home with a treat for Maddie, Libs, and Jack. Apparently, the seller claims that the nutrients in this grass helped save his own pup’s life. And while we normally wouldn’t have considered sharing a heap of cat grass with Jack, we went home thinking that we’d at least give it a shot.

As with any treat for our little ones, hilarity often follows suit. With one foot barely through the front door, Miss Maddie was already leaping over bar stools and knocking over piled mail to get her first taste. After plating the treat and sprinkling it with fresh water, I set it on the bedroom window along with the kitty’s food dish.

First, a nibble.

Then down to business.

After Maddie gave it a good go, she actually found it in her heart to give Libs a turn at those fresh greens. Our little chubby chub, who’d normally be the first to push you over for her breakfast bowl, was surprisingly hesitant at first…

But the verdict? Delicious!

On to the real test. Because  we’re a “no table scrap” household, Jack rarely gets the chance to nibble on anything other than his dry food and ice cube treats (and man, that boy loves an ice cube). Fallen dinner-prep-bits are enough to send him into a tizzy, so we were sure he’d devour the grassy dessert in one chomp…

But no. After a sniff (or two) and a little head nudge, he turned his attention out the window. To him, the street noise was more interesting, and he didn’t so much as look back once.

Of course, this just means more for the kitties. Back on it’s window perch, I’m wondering how much will be left when we return home from work this evening. And at 2 bucks a pop, it’s a simple treat that not only won’t break the bank, but provides endless entertainment to me and the hubs.

We’re totally head over heels for our fuzzy children and all their wacky glory, and we know we’re not the only ones. Anyone else out there get a kick out of their pet’s behavior? Oh, the stories we could tell! Good or bad, they’re always there to keep our beds warm and lean on us when we’re down. Shoot, I could go for a kitty cuddle right now.

Those pics are too lovely. <3
Anyway, I am curious to know how you protect your wooden floor by dog´s (and cats´) scratches. We have a Siberian Husky with us since Feb and the floor is already a disaster. Any advice?ReplyCancel

Umbrella, we take Jack to the dog park regularly, which has a pavement top. Just running around files down his nails, and they’re always dull as a result. Even when he does laps around the house (yes, he does this) or skips around in excitement, he doesn’t leave much of a mark! I guess that’s the upside of a hyper pup.

I also found this interesting home remedy solution: http://www.ehow.com/how_2125235_remove-pet-scratches-wood-floors.html. Although, there are also products that have already been made and can be found in Target, I’m sure.

Anyone else have suggestions? Good luck!ReplyCancel

That is super cute. I’ve never tried cat grass, but guess I should!

@Umbrella – I’ve always found that keeping my dogs’ nails trimmed nice and short makes worlds of difference. I do it every other week to keep things in check, and it’s easier the more often you do it.ReplyCancel

I miss those little furry ones!! My cats LOVE grass…hehe, I have to snicker at the comment!! But, beware. Mine tend to not fully chew the blades, resulting in “hairball-like” grassy-puke- piles. Hopefully your kitties have better table manners than mine :) Love you guys!!ReplyCancel

    Really cute and well-lit pictures!ReplyCancel

Libby’s happy little face just kills me! Our cats can’t get enough of the stuff either. I’ve thought about getting a cat nip plant, but I think that might be asking for trouble!ReplyCancel

I’ve seen cat grass at the organic grocery store and was wondering if it was worth buying. After reading your post, I’ll be stopping in to pick one up for my kitteh! Love your fur babies!ReplyCancel

My oldest cat, Naarah, comes running whenever we are cutting up or peeling carrots. Then she rubs, rubs, rubs on our hands and the counter afterwards. Eventually she starts biting our hands. She will not EAT carrots, however.ReplyCancel

I love this post. So cute.
My cat loves cat grass too. For her second birthday I grew her some cat grass: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrystiepher/3832098253/in/set-72157622547096713/ but since then have been getting it from our local pet food store.
This past weekend I made a little gift basket from her to my boyfriend for (cat)father’s day. She was so funny when he got home, she ran right to it and rubbed against all the items in the basket while he was looking through it, as if to show him what she had made for him!ReplyCancel

      Love these stories!

Chrystie – Gigi is beautiful! And I love the set up you have!

Leslie – Very funny. Aren’t cats so silly? And so prissy. Gotta love it.

Adaena – TRY the cat grass! Give it a go. At the very least, it looks quite lovely perched on a windowsill.

Miss Jenny – Miss you and love you! And I miss Bubby, too.ReplyCancel

Adorable! I have never bought cat grass for Abbey Road, but have a feeling she would really enjoy it. I mean, she is kittie, after all.
Maybe I’ll pick some up at my Farmer’s Market this weekend!ReplyCancel

  • Your kitties have so much character :).

Oh, and good job Jack… my Hugo would have marked all over that grass!ReplyCancel

  • Amanda6.24.10 - 9:11 AM

Aww these pics are adorable! Is it a specific kind of grass? I mean, how do the kitties know that they’re supposed to eat it versus any other house plants you may have? My Jesse cat nibbles on just about every plant when she goes outside.

The other cute but semi-annoying thing she does is possessing the notion that the new chair I just barely got is all for her. It has a curved back, so she likes to lay in such a way that it cradles her. It’s adorable, but man does she shed.ReplyCancel

    • Kim6.24.10 - 11:03 AM

      Hey Amanda,

We think it might just be wheat grass? Normal outside grass tends to leave the kitties with upset bellies, and that’s when we usually find their “presents” around the house. Cat grass is generally safe, assuming your kitty doesn’t have allergies. It’s typically full of nutrients, and the felines sure seem to enjoy it!ReplyCancel
